and Aristotle (384-322 BC) welcome the visitor; they symbolize Greek
philosophical thought. The two marble sculptures, copies of the Roman era, are accompanied by passages from the works of the philosopher, politician and orator of Rome, Cicero (106-43 BC) expressing awe
and respect for the two philosophers.
In a stark contrast to the figures of the two philosophers and in a highly
prominent position, the colossal head of Hadrian is displayed; made of
marble, circa 130-140 AD, it shows the emperor as victor and saviour,
adorned with the corona civica, the honorary wreath made of oak tree
leaves.
Epigraphical, archaeological and historical sources attest Hadrian's
admiration for Greek literature and art, the support he offered to the
Epicurean and Stoic philosophers and his patronage to the representatives of the Second Sophistic, the philosophic movement that promoted
Hellenic "paideia" (education) in the Roman era. Thus, at the focal point
of the exhibition, a beautiful portrait of Hadrian is presented in a direct
dialogue between the figures of Epicurean philosopher Metrodorus
(331-278 BC) and two prominent men of the Second Sophistic, the great

2ου και 3ου αι. μ.Χ.
sophist, orator and benefactor Herodes Atticus (101-177 AD) and Antonius Polemon (88-144 AD) who delivered the panegyric speech at the
inauguration of the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Another participant in
the conversation is the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD),
a Stoic who expressed his deepest reflections in Greek language in his
work Meditations (Ta eis heauton), very current nowadays.
At the back of the hall stand the portraits of the Kosmetai of the 2nd and
3rd cent. AD. This allegoric gathering represents traditional paideia in
Ancient Athens. The lush landscape with the holy olive trees of the Academia adorn the wall behind the Kosmetai, incorporating these administrators in the scenery of one of the most significant sites of the
ancient city which apart from the Gymnasium with the same name
was also the seat of Plato's Academy.
The world of the Athenian Gymnasia is enlivened in the exhibition by
a unique digital screening and a bust of Antinous, the beloved companion of Hadrian, who was deified after his premature death in the
Nile (130 AD) and was worshipped since, as a model of youthful beauty
and vigour. His "interlocutors" are four honorary stelae baring the in-
