Nihil est in intellectu quod non sit prius in sensu – “There is nothing in the intellect that is not first in the senses.” So wrote Thomas Aquinas. The senses are the lens through which we come to understand our world; they are the pillars on which all our knowledge rests. Although we often treat the senses as though they are immutable – fundamental properties of our physiology that provide each of us with a comparable perspective on our surroundings – the way we parse our sensory experiences is dictated by our cultural context. Societies in different times and places have differed vastly in their beliefs about the nature and number of the senses, about where to draw the boundaries between different sensory categories, and about how best to represent sensory phenomena in literature, art, and architecture. Distant Impressions is the first volume to explore the social aspects of sensation in the ancient Near East. The book is divided into two parts, the first focusing on the Neo-Assyrian period of Mesopotamian history. With its monumental architecture, bas-reliefs, and abundance of tablets, the Neo-Assyrian period is one of the richest milieus for investigating the senses and their cultural values in the ancient Near East. Contributions examine representations of the senses in the written record and analyze the sensory dimensions of two hubs of Neo-Assyrian cultural activity: the temple and the palace. The second section picks up on the themes of the first, exploring sensory dimensions of the built environment and textual representations of sensation in other times and places in the ancient Near East, such as Neolithic northern Mesopotamia and Hittite Anatolia. The book approaches the question of sensory experience in ancient Near Eastern societies from philological, literary, art historical, and archeological perspectives; it addresses the means of sense perception (such as vision, hearing, and smell) and the objects of perception (such as light, noise, and odor); and it examines the senses within religious, political, and social frameworks. Ultimately, the volume paints a portrait of the social life of the senses in these ancient civilizations. The reader is invited to hear the sound of the drum, feel the light of the sun, and smell the scent of the incense as we examine the sensations and sensory codes that underpinned ancient Near Eastern society.
The Tabulae Halaesinae are the most important epigraphic document from the Greco-Roman city of Halaesa Archonidea in Sicily and one of the few with a topographic topic known so far. They describe areas of the territory of that city which were divided into numerous agricultural lots to be assigned to single individuals. In the book the epigraphic text is analysed using a topographical method, i.e. considering the today's landscape features, which has largely kept its natural features unchanged. In this way we arrive at a translation of the text in which the many “hapax legomena” find a convincing interpretation. The Tabulae Halaesinae are a singular document in the context of epigraphic texts attesting distributions of public, common or collective lands, which usually took place on the occasion of new foundations, sales and above all leases: the Tabulae present simultaneously recognizable characteristics in all these types of real estate transfers. The conclusions reached could appear surprising, but it must be considered that, in the current state of studies on Roman Sicily, any new proposal or hypothesis considered "surprising" is justified by the large gaps that still exist in the knowledge of that very important historical phase. On the other hand, the written sources, very synthetic in our case, must be read objectively, possibly questioning fixed points that have no concrete justifications and that are not aligned with the results of archaeological research. Finally, we arrive at a new history of Halaesa, which cannot fail to have influences on the reconstruction of the history of the entire Roman Sicily.

In this my study, I focus on the question of how “Kitâb-ı Dedem Korkut” narratives can be analyzed based on the concept of matriarchy and the problem of the matriarchy theory, which social and cultural anthropologists have been examining since the past. Heide Goettner-Abendroth’s views on matriarchy were at the core of my approach to matriarchy. In this study, four woman types, depicted in the introduction of “Kitâb-ı Dedem Korkut” are, other characters from the same source as Dirse Han’s unnamed wife, Banu Çiçek and Selcen Hatun, were analyzed to establish a commentary based on the matriarchal structure views of Heide Goettner-Abendroth. The study contains various excerpts from the narrative within the text which serve as indicators of the transition from the matriarchal social structure to a patriarchal one, as seen in the “Kitâb-ı Dedem Korkut”. Not only are the women in these narratives’ good lovers, wives and mothers, but they are also loyal, honest and willing to risk everything for their loved ones when necessary, which led me to draw the conclusion that it is not correct to consider them as warrior women. An approach opposite to this result would suggest ignoring the social, economic, cultural, political, and religious changes and transformations experienced by the Oghuz society at the center of the events in the book. It is possible to see the traces of mentality changes caused by this change and transformation in the narratives of these four types of women. The nomadic and warrior peoples, who transitioned into a life of permanent settlement along with the spread of Islam, have caused women to be perceived alongside the notions related with inhabitancy and housework. Women, who could and would take on the role and status of their male counterparts when needed, have become a representation of the past due to many attempts of Islamic adaptation. Another conclusion I have reached is that in the “Kitâb-ı Dedem Korkut”, the unnamed wife of Dirse Han was the only heroine who could resist the patriarchal structure of society

At present, the building and construction industry is one of the largest economic activities in India. It is estimated that the construction industry has contributed around 8.1% to India's GDP in 2010-11 up from around 5.1% in 1999-2000.One survey reveals that built space in India will increase 5-fold from 20,000 million sq ft in 2005 to over 100,000 million sq ft in 2030.This growth will put enormous pressure on various resources such as energy, water, minerals and will have a discernible impact on the environment. Faced with an increasingly scarcity of resources, there was an increasing focus on "green building as solution". As a result, India has emerged as one of the world's top destinations for green building and has implemented a number of home rating schemes and building codes, which open up a wide range of opportunities in construction, architecture and engineering design, building materials and equipment manufacture.

Urban spaces are responsible for global warming and bear the brunt of it as well. They must evolve in sustainable ways. This opinion piece published in edit page of leading national daily 'Hindu Business Line' today talks about how cities need to think about more green ways to grow in order to grow as climate smart cities. At the moment, they are just becoming concrete jungles.

The debate over Qurʾanic hermeneutics is still ongoing. There have already been several proposals offered. One of these examples is Hasan Elik's and Muhammed Coşkun's Tevhit Mesajı. The work at hand stands out among the examples since it does not present just a theoretical frame or a few case studies in the field of Qurʾanic exegesis. Rather, it attempts to follow one approach continuously throughout the Qurʾanic text. In this article, we translated the introduction to this book; it contains both the theoretical foundation and reclections about the methodology. In addition, we also selected five different topics for translation in order to provide an exemplary, but thorough image of the work. We attempted to maintain the variety of topics as broad as possible to demonstrate that the approach of the two authors is basically similar, irrespective of what the Qurʾanic verses are about. Finally, we carried out a brief analysis and evaluation of the book, with special attention to the naming of the approach and whether it was applied consequently or not.
