Mancava uno studio che lasciasse emergere l’antichità e la rilevanza della ritualità drammatica e penitenziale della Quaresima e della Settimana Santa a Terlizzi. Il volume colma la lacuna, indagando scientificamente i riti sotto l’aspetto storico, artistico ed etnoantropologico-cultuale. Il costante rapporto fra il contesto generale e particolare, rende organica la trattazione e apprezzabile il metodo adottato. Il lavoro si configura come un viaggio alla riscoperta della storia, delle tradizioni, della pietà popolare, dei canti e della musica, della gastronomia e dell’arte che caratterizzano la Quaresima e la Settimana Santa nella “Città dei fiori, dell’olio e della ceramica”. La scrupolosa ricerca archivistica compiuta dall’Autore consente di annoverare i riti penitenziali terlizzesi tra i più antichi di Puglia. Il viaggio è in quattro tappe o capitoli. Nel primo, di carattere storico, viene evidenziato lo scenario complessivo, l’humus culturale dei rituali e delle “primordiali” processioni della Settimana Santa. Il secondo, di carattere descrittivo/analitico, riguarda lo studio strutturale del tempo quaresimale, dei singoli giorni della Settimana e della Pasqua, con ampio spazio dedicato alle ritualità scomparse. Nel terzo vi è la lettura delle immagini della Passione a Terlizzi. Fulcro del compendio iconografico sono i simulacri processionali, prodotti da abilità artistiche differenti e indagati con spirito critico, ora con audaci raffronti ora con accostamenti a prototipi emblematici della statuaria locale e regnicola. L’ultimo capitolo è dedicato ai suoni e ai canti che costituiscono la colonna sonora dei riti liturgici e paraliturgici della Settimana più importante dell’anno, definita altrimenti come “Settimana Maggiore” o “Grande Settimana” nell’introduzione di don Michele Amorosini, direttore dell’Ufficio diocesano per l’Arte Sacra e i Beni Culturali. L’appendice raccoglie i più importanti documenti inediti rintracciati dall’Autore. L’Opera è impreziosita dalla fotografia di Francesco Rubini.

Si tratta dell’immagine significante al di là del tratto e del segno in opposizione ad un mondo che ne ha fatto l’espressione del futile e del vacuo come rappresentazione dell’attimo non impressionante legata ad un cavo o ad un satellite. Recuperare il senso dell’immagine, significa ridare a questa particolare espressione comunicativa il valore didattico-pedagogico che da sempre le è stato riconosciuto. Nel Libro secondo della Quarta Disputa Generale, La Chiesa Trionfante, per la prima volta in edizione critica e traduzione in italiano, Roberto Francesco Romolo Bellarmino (1542-1621) dialoga e si confronta con Giovanni Calvino (1509-1564), teologo riformatore, sulla opportunità di ritenere le immagini e le reliquie dei santi degne di venerazione, senza incorrere nel peccato di idolatria. Questo libro dà lo spunto per riflettere sull’attualità della tematica e sul quinto centenario del movimento protestante con la conseguente nascita delle Chiese Cristiane Riformate. Si tratta di «Un invito a ripercorrere insieme il cammino della tradizione della Chiesa indivisa per riesaminare alla sua luce le divergenze che i secoli di separazione hanno accentuato tra noi, onde ritrovare, secondo la preghiera di Gesù al Padre (Gv 17,11.20-21), la piena comunione nell’unità visibile» (Giovanni Paolo II, Lettera Apostolica "Duodecimo espleto saeculo a concilio Nicaeno II", 4 dicembre 1987). I lavori di restauro nel chiostro dell’ex convento dei Minori Osservanti di Terlizzi, avviati dal 2006 e tuttora in corso, hanno permesso di riportare alla luce parte di un ciclo dipinto, raffigurante scene tratte dal libro della Genesi, che era stato occultato nel XIX secolo a seguito del cambiamento della destinazione d’uso della struttura conventuale. Gli episodi raffiguranti principiano con la Creazione del mondo e si concludono con le scene della vita di Giuseppe che si dilata occupando un intero lato del chiostro, sottolineando l’importanza che aveva per i frati la meditazione sulla vita del patriarca, prefigurazione di Cristo. Il presente contributo intende tratteggiare le vicende storiche ed artistiche dell’inedito ciclo, realizzato con la tecnica del mezzo-fresco, proponendo l’accostamento alla produzione della bottega bitontina di Carlo Rosa, ampiamente attiva in Terra di Bari nella decorazione di vasti cicli affrescati e puntando l’attenzione sulle fonti iconografiche di riferimento che testimoniano la conoscenza di prototipi “aulici” da parte degli esecutori.
Il saggio è dedicato alla commissione e all'analisi del ciclo di "Storie dell'Evangelista Marco" realizzate da Domenico Tintoretto per la Cappella della Scuola Grande di San Marco a Venezia; chiarisce, inoltre, la vicenda esecutiva della pala d'altare, affidata, per l'inadempienza del figlio di Jacopo Robusti, a Jacopo Palma il Giovane.
