This article sets the problem of historical study of the biblical world in the context of the post-Enlightenment ideological development of scientism and historicism, viewed as basic, contradictory cultural ideals. Employing the literary analyses of Meier Sternberg and aspects of Gadamer's hermeneutics, I argue that the normative "truth claims" that Scripture makes on its readers reside in the text, not in the "facts" behind the text, even when Scripture is explicitly referring to the real world and describing historical events.

The «Formicarius» by the dominican friar Johannes Nider, a leading figure in the German Observance, is a collection of miracles, a treatise on religious life and a pastoral guide for young Dominicans. Taking as its main model the «Bonum universale de apibus» by Thomas de Cantimpré († 1272), it presents, in the form of a dialogue between a theologian (Nider himself) and his pupil, a teaching on the morals of good and bad men, developed from an allegorical interpretation of the properties of the ants and illustrated by a collection of around 160 «miracula» and «exempla». The whole is divided into five books in which good and bad men are identified with clerics and laymen who adhere to or, conversely, reject the values of Observance. Organized in this way, the Formicarius defines a program designed to promote the reform of Christian society as a whole. The work is an important source for religious life in the first decades of the 15th century. Information on the spiritual aspirations of the laity rubs shoulders with doctrinal deviances and the practice of witchcraft, making it one of the first texts to describe the notorious belief in the Sabbath. Despite its interest, the collection was only available on the basis of early editions. The present study fills this gap by presenting the first critical edition of the text, supplemented by a French translation (vol. 2). It is preceded by a study devoted, in particular, to the author's biography, the manuscript tradition of the «Formicarius», the oral and written sources of the collection and an analysis of the information developed in each of the five books (vol. 1).

In: M. Danner/F. Leitmeir (Hrsg.), Von äußerst delikatem Stil. Rückgriffe aus archäologischer Perspektive. Festschrift für Stephanie Böhm (Baden-Baden 2023), 253 - 270. Abstract The gem images of Greek athletes from the period between the 3rd century BC and the 1st century AD were first worked on by Winckelmann as a coherent group of monuments of Greek gymnastics and agonistics. They are all in the Antikensammlung Berlin or have been lost. Their dating by Adolf Furtwängler is generally accepted in research and serves here as a chronological basis. Winckelmann’s determinations of this group of nude athlete images in the “Cinquiéme Classe” of the “Description” are exemplary for his later archaeological work and have not yet been examined. Winckelmann’s catalogue texts and commentaries provide clues to his iconographic knowledge and hermeneutics and reveal his formal criteria such as iconographic classification and dating based on stylistic features. For Winckelmann, gemmae, like coins, were obviously small format but important documents of ancient artistic creation. For their interpretation, he not only consulted ancient written sources and antiquarian writings but also asked for artistic models from large-scale sculpture and other genres when analysing the athlete images. In his interpretations as victorious athletes in various competitive disciplines, in preparation for the competition and after the victory, he also paid attention to other motifs, such as those of the victors’ wreaths or the tables for the victory prizes. Above all, however, he took into considerations the relevant thematic context of Greek gymnastics and agonistics.
