Effects of HIV knowledge on accepting attitudes toward people living with HIV: The case of Southern VietnamContext: Increasing thorough knowledge and adopting a positive outlook are crucial intervention strategies in the campaign against HIV transmission. However, the stigma associated with the disease frequently causes discrimination and other human rights violations that affect the well-being of people living with HIV (PLWH). Aims: To evaluate the effects of HIV knowledge on accepting attitudes among the Vietnamese population toward PLWH. Methods: A cross-sectional, self-administered, paper-based survey was conducted. Participants who provided correct answers to 13 out of the 18 questions were considered to have good knowledge, and those who chose "yes" as the response to the first three attitude questions and "no" to the last one were regarded as exhibiting appropriate attitudes. A logistic regression model was used to identify the association between knowledge and attitudes. Results: Among the participants (average age: 23.7 ± 6.4), 90.9% believed they were not at risk of HIV infection, and only 488 (39.8%) had good HIV knowledge. A low proportion (less than 20%) of them exhibited appropriate attitudes. A favorable attitude toward PLWH was significantly correlated with being male and having extensive HIV knowledge. Conclusions: While almost half of Vietnamese adults had good knowledge about HIV transmission, a significant proportion still lacked HIV knowledge and stigmatized people living with HIV. These findings suggest a need for targeted public health interventions, such as a national health education program that emphasizes family life and HIV/AIDS education, to improve knowledge and reduce stigmatization toward PLWH in Vietnam.

The current study, which expects to fill in the gap in research on transgender sex workers in India, examines the sexual identity negotiation, risk perception and condom compliance, sexual health screening and testing behavior, contextual barriers to healthcare seeking, and barriers to community mobilization among this population. The study was conducted in the red-light districts of Kolkata and rural subdivisions of West Bengal, and Eastern India. Transgender sex workers comprise 15% of the sex workers’ populace in India, yet they are an understudied and underserved group in the commercial sex sector. It is anticipated that the study will help to formulate future programmatic interventions that can cater more effectively to the health needs of Indian transgender commercial sex workers, contribute to the HIV/STI risk reduction among this group, and reduce barriers to attaining health.

HIV STIGMA AND GENDER: A MIXED METHODS STUDY OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV IN HYDERABAD, INDIA2018 •
The goal of this dissertation study is to explore how HIV stigma and gender interact in the lives of people living with HIV in Hyderabad, India. This study pays particular attention to gendered experiences of depression and medical care utilization. The theoretical framework for the study integrates gender role theory with an adapted version of Goffman’s conceptualization of stigma. The study utilizes mixed methods in two interrelated phases. In Phase 1, 150 individuals living with HIV (51 cisgender women, 49 cisgender men and 50 hijra/transgender women) were recruited to complete a survey that investigated associations between HIV stigma and two outcomes: depression and medical care utilization. The mean age of participants was 38.03 years (SD=7.62); mean income was 8,8083 Rupees (SD=5,917); and mean self-reported CD4 count was 447 (SD=258). The majority of participants were Hindu (85%), spoke Telugu as their native language (89%), and were members of scheduled castes or tribes (79%). HIV stigma was found to be positively associated with both depression and medical care utilization. In phase 2, 32 individuals (16 cisgender heterosexual women and 16 hijra/transgender women), scoring on the high and low ends of the stigma scales, were recruited to participate in in-depth interviews, exploring their experiences with HIV, gender roles, and gender nonconformity. For cisgender women in India, HIV stigma was found to be impacted by restrictive gender roles, a limited ability to refuse or delay sex or marriage, and the prioritization of male partners’ health over females’ health. For hijra/transgender women in India, sex work, gender nonconformity, and the multiplicity of gender identity were found to be important factors in influencing HIV stigma. These findings emphasize the importance of tailoring HIV policies and programs to fit the specific mental and physical health needs of hijra/transgender people and cisgender women in Hyderabad, India.

This book explores a number of issues related to the stigma arising from HIV/AIDS infection, perceived or actual discrimination from the community and society, and the extent of vulnerabilities for infected Asian refugees and immigrants. It assesses the health care and treatment regimen for HIV/AIDS accessed by immigrants and refugee claimants in North America, including treatments offered by the health-care system and ethnic communities, and their perceptions and biases relating to HIV/AIDS issues. On another level, the book identifies the ways in which HIV-sufferer immigrants and refugees/refugee claimants from Asia are vulnerable to discrimination due to 1) lack of information about HIV/AIDS incidence in the community; 2) inability of the health system to respond appropriately; and 3) the community’s need for introspection on their own health issues. This book reveals the dynamics that influence choice, behavior, and lifestyle of HIV sufferer immigrants, adds to the existing knowledge about refugees and migrants, and proposes a unified theory of discrimination and stigmatization within the context of human rights. In addition, the book presents a number of policy recommendations based on empirical findings with a view to helping reshape polices regarding refugee HIV sufferers and their social ramifications. This book will be of interest to researchers and students in any field from social sciences, health and psychology, as well as practitioners in the field of development and public policy. The book will be beneficial to policy formulators and implementers engaged in addressing the serious threat emanating from the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Cannabis use and stigma among Canadian high school students: Results from the 2015 and 2017 Cancer Risk Assessment in Youth Survey2020 •
Around 2009, mephedrone, as well as an array of other novel psychoactive substances, emerged on some " recreational " drug scenes across Europe, Australia, New Zealand, United States (US), and Asia, reportedly bringing with them a host of original and unpredictable risks for users. Some sociological and epidemiological studies have reported on the side effects of mephedrone and presented experiential accounts from users, however, few have included user accounts of risk, and even fewer have highlighted the multiplicity of such experiences. This article aims to shed light on the complexity of drug-related risks by presenting user accounts of effects and harms of mephedrone use. Data are drawn from two qualitative studies conducted in Northern Ireland between 2009 and 2012. Findings highlight the multiple ways in which effects and potential harms of mephedrone are experienced and discussed by users, while highlighting similarities and disparities between user accounts and public discourse.
