Abalone is one of the most important small-scale fisheries in Mexico and is challenged by multiple stressors. For example, the loss of the native main food, Macrocystis pyrifera, and the subsequent takeover of non-indigenous algae species represent a major threat to abalone growth and survival. In Baja California, Mexico two introduced macroalgae, Undaria pinnatifida and Sargassum horneri have become common in the past decade with unknown consequences on native herbivores. In this work, we explored the effect of these invasive algae on the growth and survival of juvenile red abalone, Haliotis rufescens. One hundred and ten juvenile red abalone were tagged and fed with invasive algae U. pinnatifida and S. horneri, and a control with M. pyrifera. Then, the shell length, body weight, and survivorship were assessed monthly for 90 days. Results show that abalone fed U. pinnatifida had a total growth in length, weight, and survivorship, similar to those fed native M. pyrifera. In contrast, abalone fed S. horneri had significantly lower overall performance. Marine heatwaves and other climatic impacts are expected to favour the establishment of invasive species. These results may be relevant to inform local fisheries and management efforts in this area under future scenarios.

Capítulo 6 BOSQUES DE MACROALGAS EN ARRECIFES TEMPLADOS DISTRIBUCIÓN Y ESTRUCTURA DE LOS BOSQUES DE MACROALGAS2019 •
Los bosques de macroalgas son uno de los ecosistemas más diversos y productivos del planeta (Carr y Reed, 2015; Schiel y Foster, 2015). Estos ecosistemas contribuyen significativamente a la captación y almacenamiento de CO 2 , lo que se denomina como "carbono azul" (Carr y Reed, 2015; Hofmann et al., 2011). A nivel global, se estima que estos bosques submarinos capturan aproximadamente 39 Tg C año-1 (Tg: Teragramo: 10 12 g; Reed y Brzezinski, 2009) y los bosques de macroalgas en México no son la excepción. Desafortunadamente, se conoce muy poco sobre la dinámica, abundancia y estabilidad de los bosques de macroalgas en arrecifes templados de México, así como su contribución a la captura y almacenamiento de CO 2. En este capítulo, se describe la distribución geográfica y la relevancia tanto ecológica, como económica, de los bosques de macroalgas en arrecifes templados. Además, se discuten los retos que enfrenta y la importancia de entender la dinámica del ciclo del carbono en este ecosistema.

Securing a Sustainable Future for Kelp Forests INTO THE BLUE2023 •
Executive summary The term “kelp” is commonly used to refer to just over 100 species of large brown seaweeds that represent some of the most productive and diverse habitats on Earth. Kelp dominate approximately one quarter of the world’s coastlines, throughout polar and temperate regions, making them the most extensive marine vegetated ecosystem in the world. Kelp create complex and three-dimensional underwater forests rich in biodiversity. These unique coastal environments provide nursery habitat, shelter and foraging grounds for a wide range of marine organisms, including fish species of commercial importance, such as cod and pollack, and other species such as crab, octopus and lobster. Kelp forests can mitigate carbon emissions by storing carbon in standing biomass and by facilitating the long-term removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) through the export and burial of kelp carbon in the deep sea. Indigenous and coastal people have used kelp as medicine, food and material for generations, with kelp forming part of their identities and fostering the development of a sense of place and connectedness with nature.
High diversity of marine macroalgae is reported for Mexican coasts, including numerous endemic species. Seaweed research in Mexico has focused on the northern regions of the Pacific coast (Temperate Pacific and Gulf of California) and on the Mexican Caribbean coast, leaving aside other regions (Tropical Pacific and Gulf of Mexico). Utilization of seaweed resources within the country has been based on artisanal collection of wild populations mainly for polysaccharide extraction, fertilizers, raw material for animal feed and cosmetic products. The main exploitation has occurred along the coasts of Baja California peninsula, based on few species (Gelidium robustum, Macrocystis pyrifera, Chondra-canthus canaliculatus and Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis). Governmental regulations for management have allowed harvesting to reach approximately 11,500 wet tons per year (2013-2016). Nevertheless, in recent years (2014-2016) the total seaweed import volume has increased (5302 tons per year in average) over the export volume (2156 tons per year in average), suggesting a notably growing demand for seaweed resources in the country and representing an opportunity for investment projects. Several pilot studies on seaweed cultivation in Mexico propose that sustainable aquaculture techniques could complement the harvest in natural populations and ensure a homogeneous production with high quality in the long term.
