The fascism-anti-fascism opposition in Italy has taken on the character of a key to understanding the present time, from a political point of view, capable of projecting itself also into a European dimension. The strength of this paradigm translates into an overexposure of the public use of history, with constant references to the Resistance, to the crisis of 1920-22, to the Duce, to racism, to neo-fascism. History returns to being - as in other critical phases of republican history - an instrument of political struggle, with all the load of simplifications, exploitation, removals and sometimes mystifications, which risk affecting the understanding of reality. The purpose of this book is to clarify by trying to clear the nebula of ideological encrustations and false conceptualizations that innervate the use of history in public and political debate.

In 1561 the General Inquisitor Fernando Valdés established a set of new instructions that systematically required defendants to depose their so-called discurso de la vida during their initial interrogation. Under the expression discurso de la vida, which was not exclusive to an Inquisitorial context, they were compelled to give an account of their own lives. !is involved narrating a life story orally, which was then transcribed by scribes. While the defendants were rooted in a predominantly ‘oral culture’, clearly observable in their depositions, the scribes worked within a ‘written culture’ typical of their position in a social, legal and cultural system imposed from the top down. !us, one confronts a singular source that has ‘fossilized’ thousands of interactions between both cultural models. !e discurso de la vida was the most open-ended part of the interrogation, offering the accused the possibility of deploying a series of strategies based on their juridical and doctrinal knowledge, rhetorical skills of persuasion and ‘selective memory’. !ese demonstrate quite an unexpected degree of agency in such a coercive situation. According to symbolic interactionism, the best way to deal with this ‘collaborative life writing’ is to try to identify the role played by each participant in its composition. How did this interaction take place? To what extent is it possible to recover the ‘voices’ of narrators? How did the scribes or the inquisitors – both coercers and editors of these texts – bias these stories? What strategies did the protagonists deploy in their ‘performances’? !ese are some of the questions addressed in the article.
Most international students need to write essays and reports for exams and coursework. Yet writing good academic English is one of the most demanding tasks students face. This new edition of Academic Writing has been fully revised to help students reach this goal. Clearly organised, the course explains the writing process from start to finish. Each stage is demonstrated and practised, from selecting suitable sources, reading, note-making and planning through to rewriting and proofreading. The four main parts of Academic Writing allow teachers and students to easily find the help they need. Each part is divided into short sections, which contain examples, explanations and exercises, for use in the classroom or self-study. Cross-references allow easy access to relevant sections, and a full answer key is featured on the companion website. The third edition of this popular course builds on the success of the earlier editions and responds to suggestions from both students and teachers. Plagiarism has become a major concern in higher education, and a special feature of Academic Writing is a section on avoiding plagiarism. There are also units on the key skills of paraphrasing, summarising and referencing. The book includes sections on crucial areas such as argument, cause and effect, comparison, definitions and academic style. Working in groups, dealing with graphs, charts and numbers and giving examples are explained in detail. Another part deals with accuracy in writing, providing practice with topics such as vocabulary, conjunctions and prepositions. The final part provides a range of writing models of both short and longer essays and reports. A new companion website offers further practice with a range of additional exercises, including answers. All international students wanting to maximise their academic potential will find this practical and easy-to-use book a valuable guide to writing in English for their degree courses.
