Carrying Cultural Images on Our Clothes: Turkish
Imagery in Modern Printed T-Shirts
Clothing developed to protect people from environmental conditions but
became part of identity. In the modern era, with the influence of global fashion
trends, garments like pants and T-shirts have become widespread, and these
items are used by individuals to express their identities. This article discusses
how the themes of "Turk, Türkiye, and Turkishness" have evolved in printed
T-shirts in Turkey and how these designs relate to the country's socio-political
agenda. The study focuses on filtering T-shirts sold on Trendyol with concepts
related to "Turk, Türkiye, and Turkishness," aiming to determine the variety
of products and analyze the symbolic content. Observations made at different
times examine how these designs have changed in response to socio-political
events. Due to difficulties in collecting sales data, the popularity of these
products was not included in the study. However, the research explores how
printed T-shirts interact with the socio-political context, highlighting the
impact of fashion on identity.

Traditional Rituals Related to Widows' Clothing in
Kyrgyz Culture
Aymira Taşbaş
This article examines the rituals surrounding widow's attire in Kyrgyz
culture. Traditionally, widows are required to wear specific garments during
the mourning period, which both reflect their social status and shape the
community’s perception of them. These rituals are deeply connected to gender
roles, religious beliefs, and social norms. The article explores the historical
origins and contemporary practices of these rituals, analyzing how widows are
perceived in Kyrgyz society and the impact of these perceptions on their dress.

A Female Traveller in Mongolia: Beatrix Bulstrode’s
Travel Accounts on Mongolian People and Culture
Cengiz Yolcu
Beatrix Bulstrode was born in 1869 as Mary Beatrix Nunns in Apuldram,
Sussex, in southern England. In 1891, she married Herbert Timbrell Bulstrode,
who worked as a government health inspector and researched tuberculosis.
Bulstrode’s husband traveled extensively in the United Kingdom and Europe
to inspect the conditions of tuberculosis sanatoria. As Bulstrode reports that
she had traveled for fifteen years through many -approximately 97- countries.
In July of 1911, Bulstrode’s husband suddenly passed away, leaving her
a great amount of Money, which would give her a financial independence.
After losing her husband Bulstrode began her own travels and arrived in China
in November of 1911, then she carried on her travles into Mongolia. Following
her journey in Mongolia, Bulstrode published A Tour in Mongolia in 1920,
which recounts two separate trips: the first from Beijing to southern Inner
Mongolia in April and May of 1913 and the second, conducted a couple of
months later, from Russia to Khüree (Urga), the capital of Autonomous
Mongolia. Altogether, Bulstrode traveled in Inner Mongolia and Autonomous
Mongolia for approximately three months. At the end of her Mongolian travels,
Bulstrode returned to England and in the following year, she presented on her
Mongolian travels to the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
Using Bulstrode’s A Tour in Mongolia, this paper aims to show how
Mongolian people, customs and culture were depicted by a Victorian Age
female traveler.

17. ve 18. Yüzyılda Osmanlı Padişahlarının “Tebdil-i
kültürün mirasçıları olan Osmanlı padişahları Erken Modern Dönemde “tebdili kıyafet”, “tebdil-i came” veya “tebdil-i suret” ederek yani kılık değiştirerek
sorunları yerinde görmek için unutulmaya yüz tutan “tebdil-i kıyafet”
uygulamasına başvurdu. 18. yüzyılda daha olgun yaşlarda tahta çıkan
padişahlar tebdil-i kıyafet uygulamasını devam ettirdi. Bu usul yönetim
pratiklerinden biri haline geldi. Tebdil-i kıyafet ile durumu yerinde tespit eden
padişahlar yenileşme fikirlerine daha açık oldular. Sultan I. Abdülhamid ve
Sultan III. Selim bu iddiaya örnek gösterilebilir. Öte taraftan Osmanlı
Devleti’nde Bostancıbaşı nezaretinde 12 tebdil hasekinin varlığı “tebdil-i
edilecektir.
The Practice of 'Tebdil-i Kıyafet' (disguise) by Ottoman
Sultans in the 17th and 18th Centuries
For centuries, clothing has functioned as the most prominent element in
identifying identity and belonging. This characteristic of clothing obstructed
rulers from seeing the true reflections of their practices within society.
Consequently, from early periods, a culture of observing the public by
changing attire developed. The Ottoman sultans, who were the inheritors of
this culture, rarely mingled with the reaya (common people) and beraya
(nobles) in the Early Modern Period by changing their attire, known as "tebdili kıyafet," "tebdil-i came," or "tebdil-i suret." However, in the 17th century,
9
Ottoman sultans turned this practice into a tradition. This can be attributed to
the changes in Ottoman institutions from the mid-16th century onwards and
the impact of these changes on all segments of society. This paper argues that
in the 17th and 18th centuries, Ottoman sultans increasingly implemented the
"tebdil-i kıyafet" practice to observe the welfare of their subjects. Young
sultans who ascended to the throne in the 17th century with idealistic thoughts
resorted to the fading "tebdil-i kıyafet" practice to address issues on the ground
and monitor the reflections of their decisions, aiming to ensure better
governance. The sultans who ascended the throne at a more mature age in the
18th century continued the "tebdil-i kıyafet" practice, turning it into one of the
governance practices. Sultans who assessed the situation on-site through this
practice became more open to ideas of reform. Sultan Abdul Hamid I and
Sultan Selim III can be cited as examples supporting this argument. Moreover,
the presence of 12 "tebdil hasekis" under the supervision of the Bostancıbaşı
(head gardener) in the Ottoman Empire is evidence of the institutionalization
of the "tebdil-i kıyafet" practice. All of these will be researched and analyzed
through chronicles, various registers, and documents from the Prime Ministry
Ottoman Archives, as well as secondary sources.

A Fabric "Worthy of Palaces" in Ottoman Clothing
Industry: Sof
Sof is a fabric made from the wool of the angora goat. Due to its shiny
and beautiful appearance, this fabric has been used in various areas beyond just
clothing. The fabric's silk-like elegance led to its preference by the Ottoman
elite, including those in palaces, and even demand from European aristocrats.
Sof could be used to make both outer garments and undergarments. Among
Anatolian cities, Ankara has been one of the most important centers for sof
production throughout history. The demand for this fabric from both domestic
and international markets significantly contributed to the production and trade
life of 16th-century Ankara. This situation led to the city being visited by
numerous local and foreign merchants, thereby increasing the city's economic
prosperity. Archive documents, particularly the Ankara court records, reveal
that Venetian, Polish, and English traders were quite active in the region. This
paper will aim to highlight not only the production and trade volume of sof but
also its importance in the clothing industry based on various sources, primarily
archival resources.

Bir Moğol Geleneği: Kemere Değer Vermek
Enkhbat Avirmed
kaliteli işçilikle işlenmesi, Moğol tarihinin her döneminde görülür.
Moğolistan’daki arkeolojik buluntular da bunu doğrulamaktadır. Altın kemer,
asaletin simgesidir.

kemerler hediye etmektedirler. Ayrıca, Moğolistan Cumhurbaşkanları resmî
devlet törenlerinde hâlâ altın ve gümüş kemer kullanmaktadırlar.
A Mongol Tradition: 'Valuing the Belt'
In the nomadic clothing culture and daily life, belts hold significant
importance. When riding horses and camels, the belt is used for a long time,
and items like arrows, bows, cups, and pouches are attached to it. For this
reason, a Mongol would never dress without a belt. Mongol men considered
wearing clothing without a belt as an omen of bad luck and compared it to
being imprisoned. In Mongolian, the phrase “deelee nömröh,” meaning
wearing a coat without a belt, signifies imprisonment. Mongolian also has
terms that denote gender: “büstei” (belted) for men and “büsgüi” (beltless) for
women. Those engaged in livestock farming, regardless of gender or age, wear
belts from morning till evening. Consequently, belts are highly respected and
referred to as “the belt that holds the state together.”
Mongolian belts can be divided into two categories: fabric belts used in
daily life and decorated leather belts with gold and silver used to denote ranks
among nobles. Nomads, particularly Mongols, place great value on their belts.
This is evident from the decoration of belts with gold, silver, and precious
stones, as well as the high-quality craftsmanship throughout Mongolian
history. Archaeological finds in Mongolia confirm this. A golden belt adorned
with precious stones symbolizes nobility. According to "The Secret History of
the Mongols," after Genghis Khan conquered the Merkits, he changed the
golden belt he had acquired as war booty when swearing an oath with Jamukha.
The same source also mentions that in the Uighur region, Idud Khan indicated
his adoption as Genghis Khan's son by holding the buckle of his golden belt.
Thus, a golden belt represents both a symbol of nobility and a valuable gift
exchanged among nobles. This tradition has continued to the present day.
Mongols still present belts as gifts to esteemed guests, and Mongolian
Presidents continue to use golden and silver belts in official state ceremonies.

On the Yanzhi, a Chinese word of Xiongnu origin
Erhan Taşbaş
Chinese sources document yanzhi as a cosmetic product. It is associated
with Yanzhi Mountain, named after the red-blue flowers growing on it. In 121
BC, when the Chinese army removed the Xiongnu from the Hexi Corridor and
established control over the region, this cosmetic product became a part of the
daily life of the Chinese people. The word yanzhi phonetically transliterated
into Chinese, gradually found its place in classical Chinese literature with
various expansions of meaning and metaphorical uses, retaining its
significance to this day.
The article focuses on the question of whether there is an etymological
tie between Chinese yanzhi 胭脂/焉支 ‘rouge’ and Turkic eŋlik ‘rouge’.
Through a comparative linguistic analysis, the study examines phonetic
similarities and semantic parallels between the two terms. It delves into
historical records and cross-references ancient texts to trace potential
connections. The findings contribute to the broader understanding of language
contact and interactions between early Chinese and Turkic cultures.

Yeniçerinin Yağmurluğu: Erken Dönem Bir Devlet
İşletmesi Olarak Çuha Dokumacılığı
Feridun Emecen
The Janissary's Raincoat: Early Period State
Manufacturing of Wool Fabric (Çuha)
As an elite military group directly subordinated to the Sultan within the
Ottoman military system, the Janissaries hold a unique place in Ottoman
history due to their warrior identity, internal organization, and role in politics.
As the first standing army supported by state salaries, which led to the creation
of a new organization, and with all their needs met by state provisions, the
Janissaries' uniforms were subject to a standard. Contrary to the belief that
uniformity in military attire originated in European armies at the dawn of the
modern era, it can be said that a standardized military uniform was prevalent
among the Janissaries, the imperial army funded by the state.
Records reveal specific procurements for the Janissaries' uniforms,
including their hat, robe-style upper garment/raincoat, trousers, and yellow
boots. Additionally, not only the Janissaries but also other palace members
received state-provided summer and winter clothing and fabric allocations.
This organization provides insight into how the administrative apparatus of the
state evolved within the Ottoman Empire on the threshold of the modern age.
Beyond procurements, a special economic enterprise for the production of fine
woolen fabric known as "çuha" for the summer and winter uniforms of the
Janissary groups seems to have been established in the early 16th century. The
main focus of this paper is to examine the conditions under which this textile
production emerged, why it was needed, and whether it gained a sustainable
nature, as well as its role within the "statism" ideology of its time.

A Comparative Perspective on Clothing Culture in the
Ottoman Empire and France in the 18th Century
Initially, covering for practical needs evolved into a social phenomenon,
transforming into a form of communication with its own symbols. The cultural
and belief differences among societies reflected in their various lifestyles and,
consequently, their clothing. In ancient times, clothing determined an
individual’s social status within their tribe and became a lifestyle offered by
tradition rather than necessity. This situation not only affected the clothes worn
but also influenced the adornments that shaped attire. Clothing style
symbolically creates a narrative power. Understanding a person's geographical
15
location, community affiliation, and religion is often possible through this
symbolic narrative power. Clothing style developed under the influence of
human beliefs, culture, and habits. The significant influence of Western culture
on Turkish culture, compared to previous centuries, began with the
Westernization process after the Tanzimat (1839) in the 19th century. In the
Ottoman Empire, Westernization movements, especially under the influence
of French culture, had a substantial impact on fashion and social life. During
the reigns of Mahmud I (1730-1754) and Selim III (1789-1807), clothing
reforms included not only military but also civilian officials. The clothing
became Europeanized, with redingotes, cloaks, trousers, and black leather
boots replacing traditional items like the sarık, robe, and shoes. Sultans
themselves led this change, which spread from the palace to pashas and other
classes. Westernization in the army initially affected men and later extended to
women. Women’s introduction to fashion remained within the opportunities
provided by urban life. Thus, this study aims to comparatively examine the
clothing culture between the Ottoman Empire and France in the 18th century
within the context of their cultural relations.

Clothing Culture of the Kazakhs and Kyrgyzs of the
Semirechye Region in the 19th Century
Güljanat Kurmangaliyeva Ercilasun
Semirechye, the historical region in Central Asia, included the territory
of present-day southern Kazakhstan and northern Kyrgyzstan. It was one of
the vivid and favorable regions of the 19th century. This century was a time
when crucial changes began for the Kazakh and Kyrgyz people, who lived a
nomadic life. The Czarist Russian domination caused many changes in terms
of political, economic, and social structure. In this respect, this century should
be considered the beginning of the transition period for the Kazakhs and
Kyrgyzs. Clothing culture, a part of material culture, is an important aspect to
understand everyday life of the people.
Clothing culture has a close tie with traditions but is also vulnerable to
fashion changes. The production and preparation of clothes had its own
peculiarities depending on local geographical and climatic conditions. The
mentioned nomadic Turkic peoples preserved the traditional core; however,
there were some changes due to political and administrative conditions.
16
Furthermore, it can be claimed that a process of change took place among
the Kazakhs and Kyrgyzs of the Semirechye region in the 19th century,
resulting in changes in Kazakh and Kyrgyz clothing culture.
This paper aims to provide a picture of the clothing culture of nomadic
Kazakh and Kyrgyz people in the mentioned region and period and to
emphasize the changes. Additionally, the materials of the clothes will be
investigated. Interrelations between the nomadic indigenous people and traders
of Transoxiana, Russia, and China will also be discussed. The paper will use
both first-hand and second-hand sources.

Lexical-Semantic Characteristics of Clothing Parts and
Additional Elements in the Epic of Manas
The vocabulary of the Epic of Manas includes a subcategory of clothing
parts and additional elements, featuring single-function item names that are
crucial for completing the clothing function and imparting unity and national
characteristics. Any form changes in the national identity and cut of clothing
are achieved through these elements. Another significant feature of this group
is that its core represents a relatively ancient segment of Kyrgyz vocabulary.
Many words in this group, such as caka (a type of garment), etek (skirt), önür
17
(sash), ceñ (belt), kur (cord), kayış (strap), and belboo (belt), are found in
ancient Turkic written works and continue to be actively used in Kyrgyz
vocabulary today. Additionally, the existence of semantic distinctions among
some members of the group necessitates examining them within different
semantic groups according to their distinct paradigmatic characteristics. This
paper aims to perform a lexical-semantic comparison of contemporary Kyrgyz
language and the vocabulary of the Epic of Manas in light of these diachronic
and synchronic characteristics.

Selçuklu Türklerinde Giyim Kuşama Dair Gözlemler
(Büyük Selçuklu Devleti Dönemi)
Halil İbrahim Gökbörü
Selçuklular döneminde Türklerin giydiği kıyafetler hakkında doğrudan
bilgi veren kaynaklardan söz etmek kolay değildir. Bununla birlikte tarih
Observations on the Clothing of the Seljuk Turks

the clothes of the monarch and the people around her, remarkable
determinations have been made from time to time. Within this framework, it is
possible to make observations on the clothing and attire of Seljuk sultans and
family members, as well as those who are in the palace organization. What can
be said about the dress of the civilian population is extremely limited.
Nevertheless, in historical records, an opinion can be obtained about the
clothes that Turks wore during the Seljuk period. We can generally imagine
the kind of clothing materials that people carry on their heads, helmet turban,
shirt, kaftan, aba, bag, underwear that they wear on their bodies; sandals, boots
that they wear on their feet. In addition, we can see the types of fabrics that
make up clothing material in the historical works written by travelers and
geographers in the first place. Some records about the manufacture, trade and
conversion of mainly silk, cotton and woolen fabrics into dresses have been
transmitted. These narrations of travelers and geographers occupy a very
important place among the medieval author groups. In this review, a typology
of the clothing of the Seljuk Turks will be determined according to the records
in the works of medieval Muslim authors.

Türk Giyim Kültüründe Dijital İletişim Uygulamaları:
LC Vaikiki Örneği
Hidayet Hale Künüçen - Serpil Samur
Dijital iletişim uygulamalarının günlük yaşamın her alanına yansıdığı ve
günlük yaşama yön verdiği bu çağ, “Dijital Çağ” adıyla anılmaktadır. Dijital
iletişim uygulamalarının etkin kullanıldığı alanların başında moda-giyim
sektörü olduğu bilinmektedir. Dijital iletişim uygulamaları; Sosyal medya,
Sanal Gerçeklik (SG), Artırılmış Gerçeklik (AG), Karma Gerçeklik (KG),
Metaverse (evren ötesi), Non- Fungible Token (NFT) vb. kavramları
içermektedir. Bu uygulamalar ile giyim kültürünün üretimden tüketime
değişim ve dönüşüm geçirdiği görülmektedir. Dijital iletişim uygulamaları;
yaratabilmektedirler: Sanal giysiler, sanal deneyimleyiciler (influencer), sanal

Digital Communication Applications in Turkish
Clothing Culture: The Case of LC Waikiki
The era in which digital communication applications permeate every
aspect of daily life and shape everyday activities is referred to as the "Digital
Age." It is well-known that the fashion and clothing sector is one of the primary
fields where digital communication applications are effectively utilized.
Digital communication applications include concepts such as social media,
virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), metaverse,
non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and more. These applications have led to
significant changes and transformations in clothing culture, from production to
consumption. Digital communication applications provide opportunities not
only to consumers but also to producer firms in the clothing sector. Producer
firms can use these applications to monitor and even influence consumer
trends. Companies are able to carry out design processes in virtual and threedimensional environments, thus preserving nature while leveraging digital
capabilities. With the help of these applications, producer firms can create an
effective communication environment with a broader audience, including
virtual garments, virtual influencers, virtual fashion shows, product
experiences created with AR, virtual fitting rooms, metaverse stores, and NFTbased shopping. This study investigates the role of digital communication
applications in the success achieved by LC Waikiki, a Turkish clothing brand
with the mission "Good Dressing is Everyone's Right," which operates over
1,200 stores in 82 countries and employs more than 54,000 people. To this end,
the study examines how digital communication applications are utilized by the
LC Waikiki brand. The study is designed using a descriptive method. The
results reveal how LC Waikiki, as a Turkish clothing brand, defines its digital
communication strategy through these applications.

The Role of Nomads in the Aba Industry: Case Study in Balıkesir,
Northwestern Anatolia during Nineteenth Century
Hikari Egawa
Balıkesir, a region in northwestern Anatolia, is famous for its Aba (wool
textile) industry. Aba is a thick cloth weaved from wool. It has long been used
to make men’s jackets, vests, or trousers as rainwear or winterwear. While it is
unclear when the Aba industry started in Balıkesir, “Aba cloth” was recorded
in the Islamic law court registers (Şer‘iyye Sicilleri) during the first half of the
seventeenth century. In 1826, with the abolition of Janissary corps (Yeniçeri)
and the subsequent creation of the new Western-style Mansure Army (Asâkiri Mansûre-i Muhammediyye), Aba production in Balıkesir entered a new stage.
The new Western-style uniforms were made of Aba, especially for cold and
rainy weather, and Balıkesir was designated for one of the centers of Aba
production in the Ottoman Empire. Because many nomadic groups of
shepherds such as Gündüzlü were living in Balıkesir and its environs.
Furthermore during 1840s, one nomadic group Kıldonlu, began to work at a
studio as spinner of wool. With the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1853, the
demand for thick Aba outerwear to protect soldiers from the cold suddenly
increased, directly connecting the economic activities of nomadic peoples with
the international war. In Balıkesir, the Aba industry has partially continued to
the present day. A more thorough examination is warranted into the role of
Nomads both in the Aba industry and in the world history.

On Clothing and Dress Styles Reflected in the Panorama of a
Kazakh Migration in the Early 20th Century
Written historical sources are among the most frequently consulted and
used sources by social scientists, especially the historians. In addition to that,
it should be noted that the memory-based oral narratives of living individuals,
especially myths, legends, epics, stories, idioms and proverbs, are also
important sources. In this context, it is obvious that research based on
observations and determinations with the method of living on the spot is also
important. Recently, it is also noteworthy that depictions on the rocks,
drawings, miniatures, paintings and photographs, which contain various
aspects and views of life for human beings, are used as an important type of
source.
Within the framework of the mentioned issues, the subject of our paper
is the painting of the Russian painter Nikolay Gavrilovich Khludov (18501935) reflecting the migration of a Kazakh nomadic group and the Kazakh
clothing in this painting. For a better understanding of the subject, our paper
will first give brief information about Khludov's life, and then point out
different details, including clothing, on the painting reflecting the general
panorama of the migration.

The Role of Q-pop in Shaping National Identity and
Promoting Culture in Kazakhstan since 1991
This paper explores the role of Q-pop (Qazaq-pop) in shaping national
identity and promoting culture in Kazakhstan since the dissolution of the
Soviet Union in 1991. The motivation for this study stems from the profound
influence of Korean pop music (K-pop) on Kazakh culture and how
Kazakhstan has adapted and developed its own pop music form. The report
analyzes the rise of Q-pop, its background, and its impact on Kazakhstan's
national identity and cultural promotion.
Firstly, Q-pop has been significantly influenced by K-pop in terms of
musical style, visual presentation, training systems, and marketing strategies.
However, unlike K-pop, Q-pop is more commonly viewed as a tool used by
the Kazakh government to promote national identity and cultural recognition.
The Kazakh government utilizes Q-pop to strengthen national consciousness
and civic identity, foster multicultural development, and play a crucial role in
cultural innovation and enhancing national pride. The paper also examines the
conflicts and controversies surrounding Q-pop in society. The emergence of
the band Ninety One has sparked widespread social attention and discussion,
particularly regarding challenges to traditional gender norms and social
concepts.
In conclusion, Q-pop, as an emerging cultural phenomenon, has
successfully integrated traditional Kazakh culture with modern pop elements.
It has not only shaped Kazakhstan's national identity but also served as a
platform for intercultural exchange and discussion within Kazakh society.

Clothing culture during the Xiongnu dynasty
Konuralp Ercilasun
The clothing culture during the Xiongnu dynasty has its roots in the
climate conditions of the great steppe region. The general culture of the Altay
communities, based on horse riding within the conditions offered by the steppe,
was shaped around animal husbandry. Pastoralism, shepherding and horse
herding were main occupations for sustaining life. The products that were
provided by and provided for pastoralism basically formed the clothing culture
in the steppe. We can trace the clothing culture of steppe people as early as
Xiongnu era.
The oldest sources for the Xiongnu are Chinese dynastic annals. These
sources provide very little information for the era before 209 BC. However,
from this date onwards, records starting with the enthroning of Modu Chanyu
of Xiongnu allow us to follow the chronological discourse more clearly.
The main thing to consider about Chinese sources is not to forget the
purpose of the writing. The main purpose was to prove the legitimacy of the
on-going Chinese dynasty. For achieving this conclusion, the rulers of the
previous dynasty, important events, economy, geography, important people
and neighbors are described in the annals. This narrative was written within
the framework of the ideology of legitimization of the ruling dynasty.
Therefore, the information given about neighboring nations can only be found
in the sources as much as it is related with the China proper. Moreover, most
of these records describe political events. Despite this, it is possible to extract
the information given about some aspects of the culture and compare it with
known ages.
Records regarding the clothing culture of Xiongnu will be identified in
early Chinese sources. These records will be interpreted and compared with
latter records in the paper. Chinese official dynastic histories will be used as
the main source for the clothing culture of Xiongnu.

into societal norms, aesthetic values, and identity in both cultures. This study
analyzes the linguistic structures and meanings of these commonly used
expressions in both languages. The paper seeks to determine whether the
similarities between these two languages stem from mutual linguistic-cultural
relationships or from independent yet similar worldviews and philosophical
perspectives.

Giyim Tarzlarıyla Medeniyet İnşaası
Mehmet Uzman
Oysa
giyim kuşam geleneklerini belirleyen faktörlerden en önemlilerden biri
iklimdir. Sıcak ülklerin insanlarının giyimleriyle soğuk ülkelerde yaşayan
insanların giyimleri bu yüzden farklıdır. İklim yanında çevre ise giysilerin
yapıldığı malzemelerin belirlenmesinde başat etkendir. İnanç ve

Classification on Civilization Through Clothing Styles
Human beings have invented clothing and types of clothing in order to
protect their external bodies from the damages that nature might cause.
Clothing, which initially began with the sole purpose of protecting the body
against natural conditions, has varied over time depending on climate,
geography, belief, socio-economic conditions from country to country, society
to society, and culture to culture. The famous historian Ismail Hami
Danismend, in his work called “Türklük Meseleleri”, attempts to classify
world civilizations based on their traditional dressing styles. According to him,
South Asians have a dressing tradition such as loincloth (peştenbal), Romans
had ihram, Arabs had/have one-piece robe, and Turks, because they ride
horses, have a dressing tradition that is closest to the modern dressing style,
such as trousers-shirt-vest. From this point of view, he places the Turks among
the societies at the top of the hierarchy of civilization. However, one of the
most important factors determining clothing traditions is the climate. The
clothing of people living in hot countries is therefore different from that of
people living in cold countries. In addition to climate, the environment is the
primary factor in determining the materials from which clothing is made.
Beliefs and socioeconomic conditions determine how to dress and are
secondary factors. In this paper, İsmail Hami Danişmend's efforts to bring
Turks closer to Western civilization in the 1940s will be criticized and
information will be given about Turkish clothing traditions.

Clothing Culture in the Emirate of Bukhara
The Emirate of Bukhara is a political structure ruled by the Mangits, the
last of the three dynasties that came to power in the Bukhara Khanate. The
Emirate of Bukhara, which existed between 1756-1920, was a period of
administration that managed to neutralise this with different methods in a
period when the Chingissid traditions in the Turkestan geography underwent a
serious change, especially in the understanding of administration, and it was
still important to come from this lineage. This period was marked by a stronger
influence of the Islamic tradition on both the state and the people. In this paper,
we will talk about the clothing culture of both the administrative level and the
people in the emirate as a cultural phenomenon apart from all these political
and ideological understandings. The main elements determining the clothing,
the salient features, the materials and colours used will be discussed within this
framework. Again, to the extent permitted by the sources, the types of clothing,
the change in clothing in different environments such as official,
entertainment, and domestic is another subject that will be discussed in the
paper.

A Brief Overview of Clothing Vocabulary in Turkish Language
Although it is known that the historical course of the Turkish language
covers a period of more than 1400 years from written texts to the present, the
history of the Turkish written language begins with the inscriptions erected in
the Orhon Valley in the VII and VIII centuries. In other words, the first major
texts are the Göktürk Inscriptions erected in the name of Tonyukuk (725),
Bilge Kağan (731) and Köl Tigin (732). The first dictionary and grammar book
of the Turkish Language is the work called “Divan ü Lugati’t-Türk” written by
Kaşgarlı Mahmut (1072-1074). The Turkish language, which is the largest
branch of the Altai language family, has been written in thirteen different
alphabets throughout history, including Köktürk, Sogdian, Uyghur, Mani,
Brahmi, Tibetan, Assyrian, Arabic, Greek, Armenian, Hebrew, and during the
28
Uyghur period, Sanskrit, Tocharian, Sogdian. It is seen that Chinese and
Chinese were influenced by Arabic and Persian during the Seljuk and Ottoman
states, and later by Russian, English and French. The most obvious reason for
this interaction in history is that, contrary to the rulers’ efforts to accept their
own language and cultural values, the Turks accepted the cultures of the
nations they ruled without excluding them and adopted their languages and
cultures more than their own. This situation can be given as an example of the
effectiveness of Arabic in the scientific field and Persian in the cultural field
during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. As a result of its geographical
prevalence, historical oldness and various cultural processes it has gone
through in its historical past, the Turkish language has a rich vocabulary. It has
brought the vocabulary of approximately nine thousand Turkish languages,
compiled by Mahmud of Kashgar in the 1070s, to the present day. Today, there
are over ninety-two thousand words in Turkish Dictionary (2011 Ankara, 11th
Edition Turkish Language Association publication). On the other hand, it is
accepted that the Turkish language is among the five most spoken languages
in the world (with all its dialects). Turkish has spread from the Arctic Ocean
to the north of India, from the interior of the People’s Republic of China to the
farthest point of Europe, and has spread to millions of people. In today’s world,
this geographical spread has increased even more. Turkish, which has been
spoken in different geographies from past to present, has been the natural result
of its development and the emergence of differences in terms of expression and
spelling throughout its history. When we look at the Turkish language in terms
of independent states and autonomous regions, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Bashkir,
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tataristan, Turkmenistan and the
Chinese Uyghur Region come to mind first. No matter which geography a
language is spoken in, its vocabulary shows the richness of that language. The
rich vocabulary of Turkish, the vocabulary of clothing, was examined with a
qualitative method and a phenomenological approach.

Altays to the Taurus Mountains and reflect a rich cultural heritage with diverse
motifs. This extensive area, extending from Turkistan to Anatolia, houses
numerous artifacts containing cultural codes such as statues, rock paintings,
and gravestones. These material culture artifacts provide significant insights
into Turkish history by reflecting both artistic and cultural richness of the
region.
Since their emergence on the historical stage, the Turks have possessed a
unique culture that encompasses various elements, from clothing and art to
beliefs and notions of beauty. Traditional clothing and long hair of the ancient
Turks were crucial components of their cultural heritage. One such element

carried from Turkistan to Anatolia is the tradition of long and braided hair.
Long hair was prevalent among both women and men in ancient Turkish
culture.
Beliefs and practices related to hair in Turkish culture have persisted
across a wide geographical area and through time. In ancient Turkish culture,
long hair was not only a matter of appearance but also held spiritual
significance. The use of braided hair motifs particularly highlights the
symbolic meaning of hair in traditional Turkish culture. Hair also symbolized
a person's role and beliefs within society. The motifs and practices related to
long hair have survived as part of the ancient Turkish cultural heritage and
have carried their meanings into Anatolia throughout history.
The hair motifs seen in artifacts from different geographical regions
reflect the presence of common values and beliefs in Turkish culture. In
conclusion, beliefs and practices related to hair in Turkish culture have
continued over a vast geographical area and a long period. This cultural
continuity has contributed to the creation of a shared identity and cultural
accumulation among Turkish communities. The hair motifs observed in
various artifacts, from statues and paintings in Turkistan to gravestones in the
Taurus Mountains, are important as concrete expressions of this rich cultural
heritage. This paper addresses the motif of hair as a cultural continuity through
selected artifacts from different regions.

örtüsünün bağlanış şekline göre “çete başı”, “çift kollu” gibi adlandırmalar;
Functionality and Significance of Women's Headwear in
Altai Communities
In any language, the vocabulary related to material culture inevitably
fades as those cultural elements fall out of daily life. When examined in terms
of clothing, the disappearance of local clothing features in favor of fashion also
endangers the vocabulary related to clothing. Specifically, regarding headwear,
in Turkey, terms such as headscarf, turban, shawl, yazma (head cloth), and
yemeni (a type of headwear) have become widespread, while local
terminologies have been forgotten. This situation is similar in the Turkish
World. As regional costumes have transitioned from daily wear to ceremonial
garments, this culture has slipped out of language.
However, our cultural geography has a rich tradition regarding headwear.
It is not possible to evaluate the culture of headwear in Altai communities in
all its details within the scope of a single paper. This requires clothing atlases,
and the preparation of such atlases should be expedited due to the risk of this
cultural heritage being forgotten. This study will focus on materials that can
serve as sources for these types of atlases, specifically those related to women's
headwear. Due to the richness of this material, headwear elements and
accessories that carry special meanings and functions beyond mere covering
will be evaluated. For example, in Turkish, the term "mezarlık" refers to a
burial site, but in regional clothing, it is an accessory made of metal that is
carried on the head as a resource to cover the costs associated with the burial

financial condition. This paper will highlight this cultural heritage using
examples from Altai communities.

Clothing and Attire in Ottoman Bath Culture Through the
Lens of Classical Turkish Poetry
Initially revered in water culture, water later became important for
purification and cleansing of sins. Bathhouses near religious structures, such
as those in mosque courtyards, ablution areas, fountains, or baptismal pools in
churches, reflect this. The practice of communal bathing contributed to the
development of a bath culture. The bathhouse, crucial in architecture, art, and
cultural history, is an essential element in Turkish cities and settlements.
The Arabic term "hamam/hammām," meaning "heating place; place of
washing," was first translated into Turkish as "munça" or "munçak." In Central
Asian Turkish states, leather tent bathhouses called "çerge," used by rulers,
eventually reached Byzantium, where emperors bathed in them during
campaigns. With the Seljuks in Anatolia, bathhouses were built wherever
possible, and this nomadic culture likely spread to the Near East. Sultan
Alaeddin Keykubat’s use of a "Hamam-ı seferi" tent-bathhouse, the presence
of luxury items and fragrances, and the continued use of "çerge" by the
Khwarezmian army and Akkoyunlus reflect this tradition. The Ottomans later
valued bathhouses highly, constructing many wherever their empire expanded.
In the Ottoman period, bathhouses commissioned by officials or the
wealthy, with their unique architecture and functions, became literary subjects.
Bathhouse elements appear in odes, ghazals, and a specific genre called
"hammamiye" in Classical Turkish literature. Epic examples also exist in
Turkish folk literature. Bathhouse attire, including futa (towel), peştemal
(traditional bath towel), towel, kese (bath glove), basin, and comb, is
significant in bathhouse traditions. This study will explore Ottoman bathhouse
attire, inherited from Turkish water culture, through examples in poets' divans.

National Crafts in Kyrgyzstan: Formation and Development
"Kyyal" is a symbol of national pride and traditional craftsmanship. In
1937, ethnographer Klavdiya Ivanovna Antipina, exiled to Kyrgyzstan, was
inspired by Kyrgyzstan's land and people. She chose the name "Kyyal" for the
national crafts organization, reflecting the frequent use of "kyyal" (dream) in
Kyrgyz patterns. In 1969, the "Kyyal" Folk Art Craftsmen's Association was
established and expanded its activities nationally and internationally.
In 1989, Kyrgyzstan's First Secretary, Turdakun Usubaliev, requested a
special building for "Kyyal" from Moscow. Five design options were
proposed, with the winning one resembling a kalpak (Kyrgyz hat) and a bazaarlike interior. However, construction was halted due to the Soviet Union's
dissolution. The building was intended to be completed as a kalpak-shaped
structure. After independence, there were privatization attempts, but Usubaliev
appealed to President Askar Akayev, keeping the building state-controlled.
On September 4, 2003, President Akayev granted "Kyyal" "national" and
"folk" statuses, renaming it the "Kyyal National Folk Art Craftsmen's
Association." Today, "Kyyal" has around sixty thousand artisans, craftsmen,
jewelers, artists, and experts from Kyrgyzstan. In 1989, the Suymenkul
Chokmorov Vocational School was established to train talented youth. The
association has reached an international level, participating in 13 countries'
capitals by 2008.
The "Kyyal" craftsmen produce Kyrgyz items including handmade dolls,
chess sets, horse equipment, household items, musical instruments, and
miniature yurts. These items are made to high standards. The "Kyyal"
Association is a significant cultural and artistic institution, with international,
national, and academic contributions, and collaborations with the state and art
experts.

Transmission of Traditional Clothing through Ceremonial
Structures: The Clothing Culture of the Yörüks of Karaali
Village, Beyşehir
From the moment humans existed, the need for clothing, initially aimed
at protection from natural conditions, has evolved into a cultural phenomenon
through the influences of geography, climate, and the process of communal
living. Over time, clothing has transitioned from a basic need to a societal and
aesthetic expression, reflecting cultural values.
Clothing provides a rich source of data across a broad spectrum, from the
folkloric and socio-economic structures of societies to the materials used, their
origins, functions, and colors. Examining Turkish communities living in
various regions from past to present reveals both similarities and differences
in their clothing cultures, influenced by various factors. Additionally,
traditional clothing reflects the cultural, mythological, and historical
background of Turkish identity.
The question of whether traditional garments, once used to denote official
and social status, are still worn today or in specific contexts highlights the
importance of concepts such as "tradition," "ritual," and "ceremony" in
maintaining cultural continuity. Celebrations, ceremonies, and rituals are
crucial for preserving and transmitting traditions. Therefore, analyzing
clothing as a material cultural element requires understanding its underlying
meaning and significance, akin to a social DNA that carries identity.
In this context, the study focuses on the clothing culture of the Yörük
settlement of Karaali village in Beyşehir, Konya, which was awarded by the
Ministry of Culture in 1996 for preserving its traditions. The study examines
traditional clothing worn during transitional periods and marriage ceremonies,
including the colors of the garments, the stages of wearing them, the status of
the wearers, and the continued use of traditional Yörük wedding dresses
instead of the white bridal gown. These aspects are explored and evaluated
with visual data, considering their historical, socio-cultural, and mythological
backgrounds.

The Functional Use of Clothing Element in Adalet
Ağaoğlu’s Novel, Üç Beş Kişi
In literary texts based on long narratives such as novels, stories, and plays,
the clothing styles of the characters reflect their personality traits and inner
worlds, allowing the reader to understand the characters better. Adalet Ağaoğlu
(1929-2020) is one of the most valuable names in contemporary Turkish
literature and a writer who is oriented towards society. In addition to a rich cast
of characters in her novels, the individual’s social identities and psychological
problems are strikingly addressed. This study analyzes how clothing reflects
the characters' personalities, social status, and inner worlds through the cast of
characters and events in Adalet Ağaoğlu's novel, Üç Beş Kişi. Finally, it will
attempt to reveal how the clothing element supports the novel’s themes.

Clothing Terminology Morphological Analysis: An
Example of Noun-Functioning Suffixes and Reduplications
Initially, clothing, which used to correspond to human, physical, and
geographical necessities for covering and protection, has been interpreted as a
means of garnering attention related to a prestigious positioning, following the
changes in developing civilizations and cultural concepts, as famously
expressed in the phrase 'ye kürküm ye..' (eat my fur, eat). Clothing has been
considered a concept that differentiates the socio-economic aspects of societies
with various stakeholders. It encompasses material subheadings such as yarn,
fabric, color, tailoring tools, and equipment. On the other hand, it has paved

the way for the development of independent and related multidisciplinary
fields such as design, aesthetics, fashion, or men's and women's special
collections. As a result, after shaping the cultural identity, the diversity of the
vocabulary has been established to ensure the conservation of new words
related to the subject.
In this study, aimed at reflecting the productive structural affix system in
the derivation of common nouns in the Turkish language for future periods, the
operational possibilities of affix functions in items established within the
context of clothing have been intended to be reminded through recent word
acquisitions. For this purpose, a formal context has been planned with
examples of Turkish-origin, item-derived words related to clothing and noun
forms in the form of reduplications; some historical dictionaries and research
have been utilized with regard to the importance of the richness of the
vocabulary contained in this concept in Turkish Data was collected through
document scanning.
In this morphologically designed study, certain historical-thematic
dictionaries were scanned in language determinations, primarily including
'Divanü Lugati't-Turk.' When necessary, compilation and scanning
dictionaries' information was consulted, and primary sources relating to
embroidery, fabric, textile and clothing were examined. In Turkish origin data
classification, morphemes formed with derivational suffixes such as +DIrIk,
+GEç, +lIk, action nouns with the +mAk suffix, and reduplicative word groups
were listed. Findings were analyzed through descriptive analysis, and
observations were shared. Thus, in the study of clothing-related word/word
groups, which can be called the material appearances of cultural mobility,
testimonies are brought to confirm the power of language derivation with the
purpose of reiterating-renewing dynamic language structure that reflects
culture.

Undoubtedly, the costumes of the ancient Turks were in accordance with
the nature of the steppe where they lived. As a result, the main clothes of the
Turks who lived on horses were jackets, shirts and trousers, as they provided
comfort while riding. Their types also varied according to the seasons. For
example, thicker and woolen clothes were preferred in winter, and thin and
cotton clothes were preferred in summers. It is certain that special war suits are
used when going to war. They were so comfortable that sometimes we witness
that foreign peoples imitate the Turks in their dress code, just as they do in war
tools and equipment. In fact, we can say that today’s European style of clothing
is the invention of the Turks. The proof of this is the clothing models on the
Turkish sculptures that have survived from the 6th-7th centuries. Here, we tried
to determine how the old Turks were dressed and what they were called by
using different sources.

The Identification and Analysis of Clothing Terminology in
Old Turkic Texts
This paper aims to examine and evaluate the terminology related to
clothing found in Old Turkic texts within the framework of their historical
context. The study will comparatively analyze the lexical units of clothing
items, which held significant importance in the daily lives of the societies
during the periods of Orkhon Turkic, Old Uighur, and Karakhanid Turkic, as
recorded in their respective texts. Additionally, by considering the variants and
changes of these terms over different periods, the study will discuss the impact
of cultural interactions on clothing cultures. The findings and evaluations
regarding these terms in Old Turkic texts are expected to provide data for
comparative studies with other languages in the Altaic language family.
Ultimately, the paper aims to highlight the linguistic and cultural significance
of clothing terminology and to explore whether these terms are part of a shared
linguistic heritage through potential connections among Altaic languages. In
this context, the study is anticipated to contribute to the fields of Turkish
cultural history and linguistics.

The evolution of contemporary and traditional sports and
clothing in Türkiye
The Turkic people have been good at outdoor sports such as riding horses,
archery, and wrestling since ancient times. After Islamization, they were
encouraged to engage in sports such as running, swimming, and throwing.
During the Ottoman Empire, the rich ethnic groups in Türkiye also brought
more different traditional dances. While engaging in these sports, all ethnic
groups wear costumes rich in national characteristics and culture, showing the
ethnic diversity and historical richness of this land. After the establishment of
the Republic of Turkey, in the process of Westernization and secularization,
Turkish sports were also affected by globalization and began to develop
modern sports such as football, basketball, and volleyball. In terms of
sportswear, Türkiye is gradually moving towards a new national
consciousness. The design is mostly red and white, and shows the star and
moon icon on the national emblem. Such development and changes are
actually in line with the trend of international development, but they have lost
balance in maintaining traditional sports and the preservation of clothing
culture. Therefore, for Türkiye, how not to lose its rich ethnic diversity and
cultural traditions in the process of sports development and integration with
the world is an issue worthy of attention.

Possible Economic Development Directions After the Permanent
Freeze of the Land Law Amendment in Kazakhstan
In recent years, China's Belt and Road Initiative has established economic
cooperation relations with various Eurasian countries, which has also raised
concerns about the issues arising from such cooperation. This paper uses
Kazakhstan's land reform amendment, which faced public backlash within the
country, as a case study. By analyzing the possible reasons for the Kazakh
public's opposition, the paper proposes potential economic development
directions for Kazakhstan following the permanent freezing of the land reform
amendment. The research employs literature analysis to examine the historical
process of Kazakhstan's land reform, using the Republic of China’s land law
as a reference to compare legislative purposes and regulations regarding
foreign leasing of agricultural land. It further explores the reasons behind the
Kazakh public’s concerns about the land reform amendment from historical,
economic, and social perspectives. Land serves as a symbol of national
sovereignty, an important production factor, and a basis for people’s emotional
attachment to their homeland.

Turkish Clothing in Chinese Culture: "Hu Fu"
Throughout history, clothing has not only been shaped by the living
conditions, beliefs, and social structures of people but has also become a
marker of national identity. Often, it is through this symbolic form of
expression that one can understand the geography, ethnicity, and religion of
individuals. While clothing culture is unique to each nation, there are numerous
instances where nations have influenced each other in this regard. In this
context, the Turks and Chinese, who have established political, military, and
cultural relations for centuries, have influenced each other’s clothing
traditions.
This study aims to identify which Turkish garments the Chinese have
adopted and integrated into their own culture. The primary sources for our
research include archaeological data such as frescoes, roll paintings, and
figurines, as well as information from Chinese sources.
The starting point of our topic is Zhao State King Wuling’s military
reform in the 4th century BC, known as the "Steppe Clothing and Cavalry
Archery" reform. During the Han Dynasty, close political relations with the

Traveling Philology: The Origins and Interculturality of
Altaic Philology in Post-War Taiwan
Wei-chieh Tsai
The main question of this paper is why Altaic philology appeared in postwar Taiwan and was developed in somehow isolated with less European
influence, but still played a significant role in the field of international Altaic
philology? Before 1949, modern Altaic philology did not exist in Taiwan under
Japanese rule. It was transplanted from China to Taiwan in an artificial
intercultural context. Lost to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in the civil
war, the Kuomintang (KMT) government retreated to Taiwan in 1949. Many
Han Chinese and non- Han Chinese people came to Taiwan with the KMT
government. This created a multi-ethnic and intercultural context of the
academia of Taiwan. Han Chinese philologists collaborated with native
Mongolian, Manchu, and Uyghur scholars, who were politicians who moved

to Taiwan with the KMT. Many of the Altaic philologists in Taiwan were
formerly educated in Europe and Japan, but originally not trained as
philologists. Though most of non-Han Chinese scholars were originally not
professional philologists, their command of Altaic language and highereducation background facilitated their new careers in Altaic philology. The
isolation of Inner Asia under Communist rule made Western and Japanese
Altaic philologists turned to their colleagues in Taiwan. International
collaboration in Altaic philology among Taiwan, Japan, Western Europe, and
North America was flourished and Taiwan became one of the centers of Altaic
philology during the Cold War. This paper will explore the origin of
Mongolian and Manchu philology in Taiwan, focusing on the eminent scholars
and their scholarship; How did the Cold War contribute to the soil for
developing multi-ethnic and intercultural academic circles of Altaic philology
in Taiwan. The disappearance of the political confrontation and intercultural
context created by the Cold War led to the decline of Altaic philology in
Taiwan.

Patterns and Motifs of Fabrics (and Other Materials) in
Traditional Turkic Clothing
In ancient times, as today, the types of patterns and motifs to be used on
fabrics for clothing were determined in advance and then applied to the
garment fabric or material using various techniques. These patterns and motifs
reflected the artistic styles and repertoires of their respective periods.
This was also true for the ancient Turks. By examining various periods
of Art History from the earliest times when the Turks spread from Inner Asia
to Central Eurasia, we can observe examples of ancient Turkish patterns and
motifs (embroidery) on clothing remnants, statues, paintings, and depictions
obtained from archaeological excavations. It is understood that these patterns
and motifs were not applied randomly for mere decoration but were symbols
or shapes representing important elements of the period's myths and beliefs.
Additionally, each period of Turkish Art History is reflected in the
decorative styles of patterns and motifs. In ancient Turkish clothing, patterns
were generally found on outer garments rather than on inner wear.
Observations of works and depictions from various periods of Turkish art show
that not every depicted individual wore clothing made from patterned fabric.
This was likely the case for garments worn by rulers, chiefs, or wealthy
individuals, who could afford garments made from valuable fabrics. The
presence of patterns and motifs on garments might also indicate that the wearer
held a high rank.

This paper will address these issues across a broad historical timeline,
from Proto-Turks, Huns, Göktürks, and Uighurs to the Turkish Islamic periods,
according to Art History. By doing so, it will highlight differences or
continuities (iconographic connections) in fabric patterns and motifs in Turkish
clothing from its beginnings to the present day.

Comparative Analysis of the Narratives of Re-marriage of
Empress Dowagers in the Liao and Qing Dynasties
In traditional Confucian thought, "re-marriage" is considered an act that
undermines the virtue of women, and during the feudal era, the re-marriage of
empresses was virtually unheard of. However, in the history of non-Han
Chinese dynasties, there are accounts of empress dowagers who allegedly remarried. This study focuses on two of the most famous empress dowagers who
are said to have re-married according to Chinese unofficial history: Empress
Dowager Xiao Chuo of the Liao Dynasty and Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang
of the Qing Dynasty (Empress Xiaozhuang Wen of the Borjigit clan, Bu Mu

Bu Tai). Although there is no strong evidence to support the actual re-marriage
of these two empress dowagers, both are portrayed as having re-married in
various unofficial histories and modern "harem dramas," with narratives
showing significant similarities.
This study aims to answer the question: "What are the similarities and
differences in the narratives of their re-marriage in unofficial histories?" Using
literature research methods, the paper first discusses the backgrounds of the
two cases and examines the records and opinions from official histories,
unofficial histories, and previous studies on this topic. The comparative aspects
include: the background of the re-marriage partners, the similarities and
differences in the narratives of their re-marriage in unofficial histories, the
relationship between the re-marriage partners and the empress dowagers' sons,
and the differences in the portrayal of their images in modern "harem drama"
scripts. This comparative analysis provides a deeper and historical perspective
on the representation of female figures in these two non-Han dynasties.
