AI Literacy: A Practical Exploration Through the Uses of AI Tools

2024, 17. Ejons Uluslararası Kongresi "Teorikten Pratiğe Yapay Zeka ve Toplum"

Majority of the people who have an idea about AI, especially generative AI has not mastered what can be done with AI yet. For instance, young generations know how to use Canva, which means in the future designers may face the threat of unemployment. They know how to chat with ChatGPT. But many people are not knowledgeable about full capabilities of generative AI. Thus, we need basic skills training to bring about literacy for how to use AI tools in less common ways. In this paper, we provide a practical exploration of AI tools to be incorporated into an AI literacy curriculum. The curriculum needs to rest on the following abilities: Ability to generate text with a prompt; AI-based e-mail systems, utilization of AI for social media effects, use of AI to develop one’s own website, information about paraphrasing tools, use of AI to detect as well as humanize AI-produced text (i.e. making it as if it is produced by a human), making presentations from a prompt or a text, generating and editing images by AI, QR code generation, video generation and editing from a prompt or a text, audio and music generation and editing, voice cloning, developing your own chatbots by feeding them with text, educational uses of AI, text-to-speech and speech-to-text conversion, no-code mobile application development, Pdf tools, interior design, story generation, translation, language learning, use of AI for health and fitness, legal uses of AI, AI for research, use of AI for travel planning etc. This list can be longer, but the core would not change much. For a person to be AI-literate, these skills need to be acquired. This is an immense area exceeding the limits of a paper, but in this study at least some of these skills will be presented by hands-on experiences through practically using AI tools available on the net, that match each of these skills.
