Azygos venous system drains the venous blood from thoracic wall. Knowledge of variations of its course and tributaries is important to cardiothoracic surgeons, radiologists and orthopedic surgeons. We observed the following variations in the azygos veins. Both azygos and hemiazygos veins were formed by union of lumbar azygos and subcostal veins of corresponding sides. The ascending lumbar vein did not drain into the azygos system. The hemiazygos vein had a larger diameter than the lower part of azygos vein and it joined azygos vein at the level of seventh thoracic vertebra. Accessory hemiazygos vein was totally absent. The azygos vein received 4th to 11th right posterior intercostal veins and also received 3rd to 6th left posterior intercostal veins. Hemiazygos vein received 7th to 11th left posterior intercostal veins.

Multiple variations in the azygos venous system: a preaortic interazygos vein and the absence of hemiazygos vein2002 •
Multiple variations of the azygos venous system were detected during routine dissection. The hemiazygos vein was underdeveloped. On the left side of the thorax, posterior intercostal veins between the 8th and 11th intercostal spaces and the subcostal vein drained into the azygos vein independently. In addition, the posterior 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th intercostal veins united and formed two superior and inferior trunks. The superior common trunk, at the level of the T4 vertebra, crossed the vertebral column obliquely, lying anterior to the aorta and posterior to the esophagus, opening into the azygos vein at the level of the T4 vertebra. The other structures in this part were normal. There were different courses of the azygos vein system. This variation is important in mediastinal surgery and also in the interpretation of radiographs.

Multiple variations of the azygos venous system1999 •
In a dissection performed in our department, we observed multiple variations of the azygos venous system. The hemiazygos vein was absent. The posterior 8th, 9th, and 10th intercostal veins united and their common trunk crossed the vertebral column obliquely lying anterior to the aorta and posterior to the esophagus and opening into the azygos vein at the level of T7-T8 vertebrae. The 7th left posterior intercostal vein also crossed the column anteriorly and joined the common trunk. The present report identifies the variable positions and courses of the veins related to the azygos system. It is important to keep in mind that different courses of the azygos system do exist, so that extra caution is required during surgery of the mediastinum and also in appropriately interpreting the radiographs.

A case of multiple abnormalities of the azygos venous system: a praeaortic interazygos veinIntroduction:- The azygos system of veins anatomical variations are usually explained on the basis of their embryological development. These variations are deserves to be highlighted and reported. Because, for its clinical importance as it acts as a collateral circulation and an alternative pathway in the case of vena caval obstructions, and it is essential for radiographic imaging and avoiding posterior mediastinum surgical complications for optimal patient \'s outcome. Material and method:- A dissection of posterior mediastinum of the adult two male cadavers in our anatomy department, showed multiple abnormalities of the azygos venous system Result:- In case (1), the azygos vein, formed by the right subcostal vein only, with an absence of the right ascending lumbar vein. The hemiazygos vein was found to be formed by the union between the left subcostal and the left eleventh posterior intercostal veins. While, The 6th and 7th left posterior intercostal veins conjugated and formed a single root which in turn received the accessory hemiazygos vein that appear to be formed by the 3rd, 4th and 5th left posterior intercostal veins. In case (2), the left azygos venous line was ill defined and the lower eight left posterior intercostal veins were opening independently into the azygos vein by three venous connections. We discussed these variations in view of their embryological developmental basis. Conclusion:- Obstruction of the cardinal veins normal developmental manner can result in azygos veins abnormalities.

Analysis of multiple variations in azygos venous system anatomy with its classification: A cadaveric studyThe azygos venous system varies greatly in mode of its origin, course, number of vertical channels , number of horizontal anastomoses and nature of termination. Anatomical knowledge of such variations is of immense importance in radiological investigations and surgical intervention of posterior mediastinum pathologies. The present study was undertaken on 30 adult embalmed cadavers aging between 40-65 years, to determine the anatomical variations of the azygos system and to classify accordingly. The vertebral level and diameter of the azygos, hemiazygos, accessory hemiazygos veins at their origin and terminations were also observed. The azygos system was classified into 3 types as per the Anson & McVay system: primitive (type I), transient (type II) and unicolumnar (type III). Type II was further subdivided into 5 subgroups (A to E) according to the number of retro-aortic communications. Type I was observed in 1 case (3.33%), type II in 27 (90%) and type III in remaining 2 cases (6.67%). The vertebral level of termination of the azygos, hemiazygos, accessory hemiazygos veins were between T2 and T3, T6 and T10, T6 and T9 respectively. Variations in the formation of azygos system is not an uncommon phenomenon and these variations may easily mislead the radiologists while performing CT/MRI of posterior mediastinum or cardiothoracic surgeons while performing vascular surgeries in this region.

Variation of hemiazygos vein with absence of accessory hemiazygos vein - a dissection study2013 •
Hemiazygos vein and Accessory hemiazygos vein lie on the left side in the posterior mediastinum of thorax and are the counterpart of azygos vein on right side. During routine cadaveric dissection of thoracic region in an adult male, we found an abnormal venous channel which was single and was lying on the left side of the vertebral column. It received tributaries from superior intercostal vein and posterior intercostal veins. We found this abnormal venous channel draining directly into left brachiocephalic vein in contrast to its usual drainage into azygos vein. Hence this can be considered as abnormal venous channel and variant of hemiazygos vein and accessory hemiazygos vein. The azygos and hemiazygos venous system is commonly encountered during surgical intervention performed on posterior thoracic wall. This case report provides a new data of potential clinical significance.

Anatomical variation of the azygos vein in human cadavers2016 •
Thirty embalmed adult human cadavers irrespective of age, sex and cause of death, were selected for this study over a period of one year to determine the azygos vein formation and drainage patterns. This study revealed four varieties regarding azygos vein formation. In twenty two cases (73.3%), the azygos vein formed by the confluence of the right subcostal and right ascending lumbar vein. It formed by the right subcostal vein with a contribution from the inferior vena cava (IVC) in three cases (10.0%) while, it formed by the right and left subcostal veins in three cases (10.0%) and in two cases (6.7%) formed by the right subcostal vein only. Moreover, in twenty three cases (76.67%), the azygos vein showed usual course and tributaries. Five cases (16.67%) revealed midline azygos vein with independent left lower eight posterior intercostal and subcostal veins. One case (3.33%) showed (H) shape azygos system. Independent double azygos veins were found in one case (3.33%). Based on the...

Introduction: The azygos venous system drains blood from the upper lumbar region of the abdomen and thoracic wall. It includes the azygos vein laying on the right and its left side counterparts, the hemiazygos, and accessory hemiazygos veins. The azygos vein receives all the right side posterior intercostal veins. The hemiazygos and accessory hemiazygos veins empty into the azygos vein after receiving the left side posterior intercostal veins. The azygos venous system shows variable drainage pattern in the posterior thorax. Objective: The main aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the pooled prevalence of each of the azygos venous system drainage pattern types. Method: PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Google Scholar were searched extensively. The prevalence of each drainage pattern and other relevant data were extracted and organized in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Stata/SE 14 software was employed to estimate the pooled prevalence of the four differe...
