Distanza e corrispondenza
I want to see you more - Sir - than all I wish for in this world and the wish - altered a little - will be my only one - for the
skies Could you come to New England - [this summer - could]
Would you come to Amherst - Would you like to come Master?
(Letter 3)

(1862)
IF you were coming in the Fall,
I'd brush the Summer by
With half a smile and half a spurn,
As Housewives do, a Fly.
If I could see you in a year,
I'd wind the months in balls,
And put them each in separate Drawers,
For fear the numbers fuse –
If only Centuries, delayed,
I'd count them on my Hand,
Subtracting, till my fingers dropped
Into Van Dieman's land.
If certain, when this life was out –
That yours and mine should be –
I'd toss it yonder, like a Rind,
And take Eternity –
But now, uncertain of the length
Of this, that is between,
It goads me, like the Goblin Bee –
That will not state - its sting.
“e tu dovessi a iva e d’autu o,
a e ei l’estate

Otis:
I Hea e they either oo or are gi e i

Letter 1
• Spring 1858
Dear Master
I am ill--
Scritta in inchiostro, su
effettuare ulteriori revisioni e correzioni.
• Il to o è u po’ dista te, a ispettoso e
solerte. Non fa riferimento alla loro relazione.
• I ould that all I lo e, should e eak o

La figura del sailor
101
Will there really be a "Morning"?
Is there such a thing as "Day"?
Could I see it from the mountains
If I were as tall as they?
Has it feet like Water lilies?
Has it feathers like a Bird?
Is it brought from famous countries
Of which I have never heard?
Oh some Scholar! Oh some Sailor!
Oh some Wise Men from the skies!
Please to tell a little Pilgrim
Where the place called "Morning"
lies!

Exultation is the going
Of an inland soul to sea,
Past the houses — past the
headlands —
Into deep Eternity —
Bred as we, among the mountains,
Can the sailor understand
The divine intoxication
Of the first league out from land?
Letter 2
• Early 1861
Oh – did I offend it –
Scritta a matita
• Inizia senza saluti, ed è scritta interamente a
matita.
ia o (Letter 3)
4. dichiara il suo forte desiderio di vederlo
Daisy
• Immagine ricorrente
nella seconda e terza
lettera
• Intimità: fiore da
giardino
• Umiltà
• Morte
"Oxeye-daisy" in Emily Dickinson.

How many times these low feet staggered —
Only the soldered mouth can tell —
Try — can you stir the awful rivet —
Try — can you lift the hasps of steel!
Stroke the cool forehead — hot so often —
Lift — if you care — the listless hair —
Handle the adamantine fingers
Never a thimble — more — shall wear —
Buzz the dull flies — on the chamber window —
Brave — shines the sun through the freckled pane —
Fearless — the cobweb swings from the ceiling —
Indolent Housewife — in Daisies — lain!
Il giorno del funerale
di ED, la sua stanza è
piena di margherite e
mughetti
Heart
“Daisy - who never flinched thro' that awful parting - but held her life so tight
he should not see the wound - who would have sheltered him in her childish
bosom (Heart) - only it was'nt big eno' for a Guest so large –

Opposizione:
• Savior! I've no one else to tell —
Grande – Piccolo
And so I trouble thee.
Maestro - Allieva
I am the one forgot thee so —
Dost thou remember me?
Nor, for myself, I came so far —
That were the little load —
I brought thee the imperial Heart
I had not strength to hold —
The Heart I carried in my own —
Till mine too heavy grew —
Yet — strangest — heavier since it went —
Is it too large for you?
Letter 3
• Summer 1861
Master.
If you saw a bullet
Hit a Bird –
If you saw a bullet hit a Bi d…
Master.
If you saw a bullet hit a
Bird - and he told you he
was'nt shot - you might
weep at his courtesy, but
you would certainly
doubt his word -
Fragilità e sofferenza

Her smile was shaped like other smiles —
The Dimples ran along —
And still it hurt you, as some Bird
Did hoist herself, to sing,
Then recollect a Ball, she got —
And hold upon the Twig,
Convulsive, while the Music broke –
Like Beads — among the Bog —
Redemption
I heard of a thing called
"Redemption" - which rested
men and women – You
remember I asked you for it –
you gave me something else – I
forgot the Redemption [in the
Redeemed - I did'nt tell you for a
long time - but I knew you had
altered me - I] and was tired –

Go slow, my soul, to feed thyself
Upon his rare approach —
Go rapid, lest Competing Death
Prevail upon the Coach —
Go timid, should his final eye
Determine thee amiss —
Go boldly — for thou paid'st his price
Redemption — for a Kiss —
Idea di SCAMBIO
La Redenzione viene concessa non da
Dio, a dall’a a te
(George Herbert Mead)
Emily Dickinson si adatta
all’asse za di iò he a a e i
costruisce intorno la sua
poesia.
Conclusioni
• Destinatario più maturo e dotato di una
conoscenza superiore
• Rapporto a distanza
• Inesperienza e fragilità
• Redenzione attraverso l’a o e
