Abstract
The present Mediterranean environment is the result of long-standing human activity and fire. Fire must therefore be considered as an internal process of the Mediterranean ecosystems. The inter-relationships between man, fire ana the ecosystem are complex, but their understanding is of extreme importance for the development of adequate policies of fire management.
