Byzantine Aquileia2022 •
This article aims to organize a series of ideas, researches and reflections, accumulated by the author during several decades around the theme of Byzantine Aquileia. The initial idea is that in addition to the nucleus of local traditions coagulated around the name of Narses, preserved to the historical memory handed down by the Aquileian ecclesiastics, it is possible to identify some traces that, combined with each other, contribute to forming a very articulated picture on the monumental aspects of the city in the fifteen years, or a little more, which preceded the arrival of the Lombards. Some topics have not been included here, such as the decoration of the stone furniture of the second phase of the Monastero church or the new interpretation of the complex of the church of St. Hilary, already extensively treated by the author in specific studies. Instead, the contribution on the epigraph of Paulus of the numerus Zaliorum, which also appears in the proceedings of the meeting on the fifth and sixth centuries, is re-proposed here. From a strictly historical point of view, this contribution analyzes the figure of Narses in the local historical literature to the point of reconsidering the quotation of Aquileia in Justinian’s Novella 29, through its historical framework. This led to the subject of the Antenorides in Aquileia, quoted by a famous epigraph. From an archaeological point of view, the main point are the so called zigzag walls which for the first time are analyzed in full. From their construction came the need for a new urban layout of the northern part of the new Aquileia, reduced in size like many other contemporary centers. Large demolitions were carried out by the Byzantines, but also new public works were built such as the branch of the aqueduct that crosses the CAL fund and was reused in the Teresian age to feed the water supply of the eighteenthcentury city. Some observations on the houses of the late period are then proposed with regard to the southern house of the CAL fund. The result is a picture, still partial, but certainly wider than what Aquileian studies have hitherto led to suspect, of the vitality and above all of the diversity of Aquileia compared to its previous face in the short period in which it was under full Byzantine dominion, a period between another of extreme importance for the history of the local church, which saw the proclamation of the patriarchate and the beginning of the Tricapitoline schism.

A new look on some of Western Anatolian problems in MB and LB
This dissertation is devoted to the development of South Arabian capitals from the 5th to the 7th century AD, with particular emphasis on Christian Byzantine iconographical models. In the first three chapters a typological classification of the South Arabian capitals is introduced. The first chapter deals with capitals of Classical period; the second and third deal respectively with capitals having Hellenistic and Christian Byzantine influences. As shown in the conclusive chapter, a preliminary comparative study with the neighbouring areas has not only underlined the existence of political relationships, but also of cultural and artistic exchanges between the kingdom of Aksum and the Byzantine empire. The kingdom of Aksum had a fundamental role in the trasmission of the Christian Byzantine iconographies attested in Southern Arabia. On this ground, we can assert that the South Arabian material clearly shows a local stylistic interpretation of external iconographic models. This way, it can be included in the common iconographic repertoire of Christian Byzantine art following the leading themes mediated by the kingdom of Aksum.
