Hammer’in sürdürdüğü bu ilişkinin izlerini Osmanlı arşivlerinden takip etmek mümkündür. Bu çalışma mevcut belgeler yardımıyla Hammer’in hayatının ve çalışmalarının izini sürmeyi hedeflemektedir. Baron Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall, who is one of the pioneers and representatives of the German orientalists, besides his scientific and literary activities as a bureaucrat acted as a bridge between the Ottomans and Austrians. Hammer had the opportunity to become familiar with his field when he was in the Ottoman Empire, and mostly in Istanbul between 1800 and 1806, except a year that he spent in London and Vienna. He had relationships both with the Ottoman State and with the contemporary Turkish scholars as well as scientific institutions by correspondence. It is possible to follow this relationship in the Ottoman archival documents. This study aims to follow up Hammer's life and works with the help of these documents.

This article explores Ibn al-Mutahhar al-Hilli’s approaches to al-imamat. According to al-Hillī imamat must be believed in order to gain the paradise. For this importance, imamat can not be left to human elections so the imam must be chosen by God. al-Hillī emphasizes to infallible (‘ismah) and virtue (afdaliyyah) as imam’s qualities. al-Hillī strives to prove that Ali b. Abu Talib had appointed as imam after the last Prophet Muhammad by Him. For arguing this subject, al-Hillī uses a lot of verses and hadiths. Although imam’s importance for protection and practice of religion, al-Hillī did not mention, except saying: “only God has the knowledge”, why the imams did not perform this duty in history and why the last imam is absent since centuries.
