Assessing Potable Water Access and Its Implications for Households’ Livelihoods: The Case of Sibi in the Nkwanta North District, GhanaDespite water being a basic human need, the residents of Sibi in Ghana’s Nkwanta North District struggle to obtain potable water, which negatively influences their livelihoods. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts on households’ livelihoods due to difficulties in accessing potable water and accordingly give policy recommendations. Data were collected through questionnaire surveys, interviews, geographic information systems (GIS), and remote sensing (RS) techniques. Questionnaire surveys were administered to 314 randomly selected household heads. The results indicated that the water sources available in Sibi were not sufficient; the boreholes and public tabs/standpipes in the communities were not dependable for regular access. As a result, households needed to depend on distant streams and dams for water. The households generally spent more than two hours at the water sources to collect water. Evidently, the Sibi residents did not have sufficient access to potable water, which se...

The case study area of North-east Ghana consists of a densely populated zone in Upper East Region and a less densely populated area in Northern Region. It was selected as an example of a rural area with sub-humid conditions, a relatively high average population density and relatively severe land degradation. A major part of the chapter describes the lack of consistency between rainfall data and crop yield data and tries to explain farmers’ behaviour as a constant adaptation to the rainfall situation, embedded in a volatile socio-economic environment. Farmers acknowledge climate change, and they, government institutions and non-governmental agencies have responded with more emphasis on water provision and land management improvements and with more emphasis on sector and geographical differentiation, including much more reliance on migration and remittance income.

This unique book is the first publication on the art of teaching Persian literature in English, consisting of 18 chapters by prominent earlycareer, mid-career and established scholars, who generously share their experiences and methodologies in teaching both classical and modern Persian literature across various academic traditions in the world. The volume is divided into three parts: the background to teaching Persian literature, teaching Persian literature: pedagogy, translation and canon, and thematic and topical approaches to the Persian literature class. It includes such topics as the history of teaching Persian literature, the traditional teaching of Persian literature, the political and ideological intentions revealed in the formation of the Persian literature curriculum, the necessity to include marginalized modern Persian literature, such as women's or diaspora literature, and more applied approaches to curriculum development and teaching.

Glass from Islamic Sicily: typology and composition from an urban and a rural site2024 •
As part of the Sicily in Transition and GlassRoutes projects, glass artefacts from various medieval Sicilian sites have been analysed by LA-ICP-MS. This made it possible to collect data on the circulation of glass on the island in the Middle Ages. The comparison of the data from the coastal town of Mazara with those from the rural area of Castronovo di Sicilia allowed us to establish a continuity in the supply of fresh Levantine glass to the island as late as the end of the 7 th century. The results also point to a possible role of urban centres in the redistribution of goods to the hinterland in the 8th century. During this period, the Castronovo area was supplied by imports of fresh glass from the Levant and Egypt, from regions that were part of the Umayyad caliphate. The 10th-to 11th-century glass assemblages from both sites shows a considerable Islamisation of Sicilian material culture, with typologies reminiscent of what is known from Egypt, Ifrıqiya and the Iberian Peninsula. The discovery of a compositional group at both Mazara and Castronovo, which differs from published data from other areas of the Mediterranean basin, also suggests a Sicilian origin of these objects. Islamisation is thus also evident in the adoption of production technologies typical of the Islamic world, such as the use of soda-rich plant ash as a fluxing agent.

MiningForum2024 Conference-Invesments in Mining Abstracts Book, 20242024 •
