One of three copies for the family. One of three copies for the family. 35 black and white silver prints on 11 x 14 inch heavy paper. Oblong Folio. Rare collection of photographs taken and, likely, developed and assembled all by Avedon himself, rather than by his studio, and characteristic of his private life, but not of his public oeuvre. The negatives are said to have been destroyed, to make this series irreproducible. The first photo, of the Avedon house in Bolinas, is titled and signed by Avedon. The last, a still life, is signed "27. 28. 29. 77 / Dick / XXX / OOO". The thirty-fifth photo, of Lucy Saroyan, whose set this was, is detached, and cropped at the bottom, with a crack on the image where something has fallen on it. Aram Saroyan started working with Avedon in the 1950s, starting out after school for $10 per week. They stayed in touch with each other's work and remained friendly over the years. In May 1977, Avedon came to visit Aram, Gailyn, Strawberry, Cream, and Armenak Saroyan at their house in Bolinas. Aram's sister Lucy, an actress and model of Avedon's, came with. Avedon left his box camera at home, but after a few days missed his vocation and borrowed a Leica from the poet Bill Berkson, the Saroyans' neighbor. A few weeks after his return to New York, a package arrived from the studio: ".a book of 35 photographs he'd taken during his visit. Spiral bound, the book was a series of images printed on heavy 11" x 14" photo paper, each sheet glued back-to-back to another sheet with another photograph. "During the period I'd worked in the studio I'd heard whispers here and there in the photography world that without his support staff of assistants and master printers, Dick would be more or less helpless. As we beheld this marvel that rumor died an instant death. Different as it is, in its off-the-cuff fluency this work might even be reckoned a precursor to In the American West. "There's a loving intimacy in these photographs which, while it isn't a recognized hallmark of the Avedon oeuvre, was nonetheless, as my relationship with him reflects, very much a part of his nature. It still troubles me that he would adamantly suppress this side of his practice in the work he made public." (Saroyan, My Own Avedon, which features five of the photos). Saroyan, Aram. My Own Avedon. A Memoir with Photographs. Los Angeles: An Air Book, 2010 Bound in full orange calf, stamped in gilt on upper cover "Avedon" and lower right "Saroyans'", by Jack Chitgian of Beverly Hills, with some soiling to covers; photos generally near fine 35 black and white silver prints on 11 x 14 inch heavy paper. Oblong Folio.

No Binding. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. From the estate of Pauline Kael, this is an original Avedon print, titled and signed by the artist in 1971. Richard Avedon began his career as a fashion photographer in 1945, and he came to be known as the preeminent contemporary American portrait photographer. This image, of the one-time lovable Little Tramp posing as the Devil on his last day in the U.S., is one of Avedon's most famous, and one of the most famous images of Chaplin. Chaplin, who had long sought teenage girls as his lovers and wives, was hounded by years of persecution for his sexual proclivities and his left-leaning views. In 1944 he was involved in a high-profile scandal when he was indicted on charges involving a young actress he had brought to California and, although he was exonerated on all counts, the negative publicity began a series of events culminating in his voluntary exile from the U.S. eight years later. In addition, the FBI had stepped up its investigations of him as a result of his public statements in support of Russia and Soviet Communism. In 1952, when Chaplin left for England to promote his film "Limelight," the U.S. Attorney General used the opportunity to revoke his re-entry permit (Chaplin had never been an American citizen) unless Chaplin agreed to even more scrutiny of his private life. Chaplin opted to settle in Switzerland with his third wife, Oona O'Neill (daughter of Eugene O'Neill). This Avedon image is the final image of Chaplin in America and a pointed reference to his demonization by the American press and government. Pauline Kael's first film review, in 1953, was of Chaplin's "Limelight." She didn't like it, and it launched her career. 19-3/4" x 15-1/2". Dry mounted on board, and matted. Near fine.

First edition, limited issue, number 81 of 250 copies signed and numbered by the photographer, with an engraver's proof photograph of Marilyn Monroe loosely inserted as issued. Avedon's photographic autobiography ranges from his earliest private pictures to the snapshots of stars that made his name. His "fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty, and culture for the last half-century" (New York Times obituary). The print is Avedon's most famous portrait of Monroe, taken in his studio in May 1957. "For hours she danced and sang and flirted and did this thing that's - she did Marilyn Monroe", he recalled. "And then there was the inevitable drop. And when the night was over and the white wine was over and the dancing was over, she sat in the corner like a child, with everything gone. I saw her sitting quietly without expression on her face, and I walked towards her but I wouldn't photograph her without her knowledge of it. And as I came with the camera, I saw that she was not saying no" (Museum of Modern Art). The subsequent photograph is one of the most intimate portraits of the superstar and one of Avedon's most iconic images. Quarto. Original white cloth, spine and front cover lettered in grey, black and white photographic illustration mounted on rear cover. With white cloth slipcase and print (340 x 270 mm) as issued, in original cardboard box lettered in grey. Photographic illustrations throughout. Review of An Autobiography from the San Francisco Examiner (12 December 1993) loosely inserted. A few faint marks to covers and slipcase; cardboard box marked, bumped at foot with two short abrasions: a near-fine copy.

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Limited Edition. Folio, unpaginated. Deluxe issue, 1/250cc. A near fine copy in the publisher's white cloth, stamped in several shades of grey, with applied photographic portrait of Avedon on the rear board. Spine very gently darkened, but a lovely example. In the publisher's slipcase, with a few small faint stains, but sound and at least very good. This is number 98 of 250 copies SIGNED and hand-limited by Avedon, with the signature and limitation taking up the entirety of the front free endpaper. Laid-in is the "special edition engraver's proof" of Avedon's famous melancholic portrait of Marilyn Monroe, with publisher's stamp to verso, as issued, and in fine condition. Avedon's "autobiography" (really a kind of catalog raisonne, with beautifully printed full-page reproductions of his best work) was published to great success, and was quickly reprinted. This specially bound signed limited edition has become scarce in the trade, and has sold well above its estimate in recent auction appearances. It must be sold with the Monroe print to be considered complete.

First edition, first printing, inscribed by the photographer on the half title, "Marguerite, with love, ever Rich". The recipient, Marguerite Littman (1930-2020) was an American-British socialite who sat for Warhol's minimalist polaroids. "A honey-voiced Louisianian and literary muse who taught Hollywood to speak Southern" (Green), Littman was a columnist for Glamour magazine and the inspiration for Truman Capote's Holly Golightly, but her most enduring legacy was as an early force in the fight against aids. She was the founder of the AIDS Crisis Trust, which published Hockney's Alphabet in 1991 to raise money. A fellow philanthropist and close friend, Diana, Princess of Wales, donated her wardrobe for sale at auction to benefit the AIDS Crisis Trust and other charities in 1997. The Manhattan Project was formed in 1968 as an experimental theatre company which broke the norms of conventional theatre. The project lasted for several years and proved extremely influential. The photographs were taken by Richard Avedon during the production of Alice in Wonderland in a church annexe of Broadway on Park Avenue South. Oblong quarto. Original white boards, lettering to front cover and spine in brown, printed on 80 pound Wedgewood dull coated stock. With dust jacket. Illustrated throughout with over 100 photographs by Avedon. Toning to edges and light knocks to boards; dust jacket chipped and nicked with a larger piece missing from the back panel, a couple of pieces of adhesive tape to verso, unclipped: a very good copy in good jacket.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. AVEDON, Richard Warmly inscribed on FFEP: For Veronica and Bill Hearst. Dick Avedon 1992 [176] pp. Over 120 monochrome plates Farrar, Straus & Giroux 1978 14 1/4" x 11" w/ printed acetate dust jacket An anthology of the finest photographs taken by Richard Avedon in his career up to 1977, inscribed by the photographer. The subjects of his images read like a Who's Who of the fashion and entertainment world - Lauren Bacall, Brigitte Bardot, Cecil Beaton, Marisa Berenson, Marlene Dietrich, Givenchy, Audrey Hepburn, Bianca Jagger, Loulou de La Falaise, Sophie Loren, Marilyn Monroe, Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Shrimpton and Gloria Vanderbilt. These portraits are interspersed with his fashion photographs. The cover features Marella Agnelli to the front and 'Dovima with Elephants' to the rear. The book accompanied a retrospective exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In January 1995, Veronica DeGruyter Beracasa de Uribe Hearst gave an intimate lunch for Diana, Princess of Wales, in her opulent apartment on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 66th Street. The Princess was in New York to give an award to the then editor of Harper's Bazaar magazine and fellow Englishwoman, Liz Tilberis. Tilberis had asked Veronica, a clotheshorse with a love of couture, to host the lunch. Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld was there, along with photographer Patrick Demarchelier. So too was the Princess's great friend Lucia Flecha de Lima, the wife of the Brazilian ambassador to the U.S.Ñ and also Patti Hearst, Veronica's famous hostage-turned-urban-guerrilla-turned-housewife stepdaughter. So, of course, was Veronica's husband, Randolph Apperson Hearst, Tilberis's ultimate boss as chairman of the Hearst Corporation, which owns Harper's Bazaar and other magazines, including Cosmopolitan, Town & Country, and Esquire. Randy, as he was known, was the last surviving son of the American newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst. Inscribed by Illustrator(s).
