    Product Description

TS-262 | Intel Dual-Core 2.5GbE Multimedia NAS with M.2 PCIe slots and PCIe expandability

A fast and vast private cloud storage with a range of multimedia and file management applications, the TS-262 is ideal for home users to maximize their digital lifestyle. Files, data and multimedia saved on the TS-262 can be accessed from all your connected devices, including phones, computers and smart TVs. A 2.5GbE port and HDMI 2.0 port come as standard, allowing you to enjoy lag-free multimedia streaming throughout your home and directly on your TV. The TS-262 can be geared up to fit future needs, supporting two M.2 PCIe slots for Qtier auto-tiering storage technology, and can be easily expanded to fit growing data needs. The TS-262 also supports Edge TPU, allowing you to easily organize your photos based on facial and object recognition with the QuMagie app.

    2.5GbE port

Immediately multiply your network speed by 2.5 times while using existing CAT5e cables.

    HDMI port

4K media playback and real-time transcoding; directly watch videos using HDMI 2.0 (4K @60Hz) output.

    AI-powered image recognition

Supports Edge TPU (optional purchase) for supercharged AI-powered image recognition.

    Dual M.2 PCIe slots

Attain greater NAS performance by installing M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe SSDs (sold separately).

    PCIe slot

    Install a PCIe Gen3 x2 card to expand the core functionality of the TS-262, including a Multi-Gig 10GbE/5GbE network card, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) card, or a Wi-Fi 6 network card.

    Expand storage capacity

Flexibly scale your total storage capacity by connecting USB expansion enclosures (please see the compatibility list).

Upgrade your home network to 2.5GbE

Wi-Fi 6 and 5G are becoming the new normal for networking, and there's no reason why your home wired network shouldn't also get a boost. The TS-262 comes with single 2.5GbE RJ45 LAN port which supports existing CAT5e cables. If your computers don't have 2.5GbE ports, you can use QNAP's USB 3.2 Gen 1 to 5GbE adapter (model name QNA-UC5G1T) to take advantage of the huge speed increase that 2.5GbE provides over standard Gigabit Ethernet. QNAP also provide affordable 2.5GbE switches and other adapters for you to take full advantage of the TS-262's 2.5GbE connectivity.

Intel dual-core processor burst up to 2.9 GHz

The TS-262 is powered by an Intel® Celeron® N4505 dual-core processor (burst up to 2.9 GHz), and supports SATA 6 Gb/s drives. The Intel® AES-NI encryption engine boosts encryption performance while also maintaining the security of your NAS data. You can flexibly install NVMe SSDs in the M.2 PCIe slots for cache acceleration to maximize network and storage performance for data-intensive applications or enable Qtier for auto-tiered storage for higher storage efficiency.

Overall, this is a very good entry level NAS. The RAM is soldered onto the motherboard, so 4G is what you get, and the Celeron is only dual core. However for something that is intended to do disk serving, perhaps with some Plex use, and some other applications, for this price range, it is good enough.

QTS doesn't have ZFS support, but it has a lot of really nice features. For example, a plugin to securely back up one's WordPress files, as well as software to back up Windows and other machines to the NAS. Since I have other network appliances doing this, and this NAS is something I bought for a project, I mention this, since it can be something that makes this worth picking up. In fact, if a household doesn't have a NAS, they should consider one, if only as a place for backups, or offloading files from their main machines.

QNAP's software, QTS, excels at syncing to cloud providers. It works well with all of them, but iCloud.

As for ZFS support, booting from Ubuntu media, via hitting the delete key while it boots, installing Ubuntu on an external USB drive, or one can install it on a SSD in an internal slot, works well. Since QTS isn't tough to reinstall, I used "blkdiscard -f -v -s" to erase the small eMMC drive (which surprised me, because the eMMC drive supported a cryptographically secure erase), and left it empty. This way, it will always boot from the SSD.

From there, Ubuntu works well. The two hard disks got ZFS (which normally comes with QNAP's midrange to higher end offerings), and the other SSD is now a ZIL (write cache). Add Samba and even though one doesn't have the bells and whistles QTS has, it works very well and has top notch security. I enrolled the NAS in Ubuntu Pro, so it can fetch updates without rebooting.

Overall, for its price range, it is definitely something people can use. It can be used by virtually anyone, and provides a lot of useful options. If one is Linux savvy, then it can be repurposed with Debian, Ubuntu, or one's distribution of choice.

Just be aware of its limitations. It does have 2.5 gigE, and a PCIe card, but has a dual core Celeron and four gigs of RAM. This puts it on the edge of using ZFS (definitely one isn't going to be using ZFS deduplication). However, it is well made, reliable, and allows for hot-swapping drives, which is all important.

For my use, which is a NAS dedicated to a project, it is a solid choice.

I had to replace an older Qnap server and I chose this device and I am happy to say the experience has been fantastic.

      Easy to setup
      Easy to use

Only downside is I could not transfer my previous 2 disk raid disk that worked to this device.

Recommendation and likely what I should have done anyway was make a local backup of all data on top of the raid protection I thought I had.

I had a WD EX4100 and it doesn’t even compare to Qnap. Now the setup does take sometime and you must know your IP address in order to login it and the site link. The monthly updates and security and features even VPN and Plex for media sharing. It’s the best. I highly recommend you get you one.

Easy to install and maintain. Plenty of apps and options to customize hardware and software. Tip, once installed turn off beeps. The beeps are very loud and go off often.

I don't recommend using this version if you are video editing 2 or 4k footage or on a slow network. I am currently using the nvme ssd caching option which works great. You can access this NAS from anywhere after proper setup, and if you're adventurous, this NAS can be used to host a website.

The build quality is nice but probably not the best looking desktop item.

I tried the highly-rated Synology first and I could not get that thing to work right and returned it after a month of trying. This QNAP one seems a whole lot easier to set up and use. A couple months in and I think I'm figuring things out. Recommend.

I have an older BuffaloTech NAS that is starting to show its age, and their tech support is lousy - mostly user-driven and most of their users seem to have wandered away to more robust NAS systems. The Wirecutter gave this QNAP high ratings so I decided to order it along with some new Seagate IronWolf 4tb drives.

The QNAP arrived quickly (thanks Amazon!) and I unboxed it and thought I would pop the new drives in the bays. First problem: the pictures-only installation manual that came with the NAS showed that a slide switch was the key to opening the bays. I slid that switch and nothing... the bays' door did not budge. I went online with QNAP looking for a solution and found nothing. I scoured YouTube for the same and everything I found made it look simple - that slide switch is suppose to open the drive bays up. But not on my new fresh-out-of-the-box QNAP.

I found a tech support number and called up, expressing my frustration, but politely. And the answer that I got? Laughter.

That was not the answer I was hoping for, so I disconnected, packed the NAS back into the box and returned it to Amazon. Problem solved.

I might have received the one unit out of 5 million that has a stuck drive bay door; I don't know. I just know that Synology would not treat a new customer like that, so that's where I'm headed.

The difference in OS resulted in Snapshots not transferring between my two NAS systems. All Was ok.. Was able to sync the two systems with other utilities.. But copying 10 TB took a significant amount of time. The first transfer with the systems went on 2.5 gbit ethernet, and it worked wtihout problems.
