  • Learn a skill that would help you survive a zombie apocalypse.
  • Losing your temper feels really good. . .for about 17 seconds. Keeping your cool feels even better. . .for the rest of the week.
  • Realize most bad choices usually began five choices ago.
  • If you have a TV in your bedroom, unplug it right now and move it to another room.

. . .and dozens more helpful hints provide spiritual, practical, and even humorous advice for navigating the challenges of your teen years with confidence and wisdom.

“Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity,

God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

Review

As the father of 11 grown sons (yes, 11 boys among 19 total children), I would have loved a resource like this when my sons were teenagers. Teen guys today will love Jonathan McKee's humor and insight, and his perfect balance of caution and encouragement. It's a clear map to the good life!

Pat Williams
Senior Vice President, Orlando Magic
Author, THE LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE DEVOTIONAL

“Wow! Jonathan McKee hammered this one out of the park!
The Guy’s Guide to God, Girls, and the Phone in Your Pocket, speaks in a language that boys and young men can relate to and understand. This easy-to-digest little book teaches young males the wisdom they need in order to be successful in life. It covers virtually every topic (even the tough ones) that males struggle with today and provides powerful solutions for them without preaching at them. If I still had a boy at home, I’d be running to get this book!”

-Rick Johnson, bestselling author of
That’s My Son, Better Dads Stronger Sons, and A Man in the Making

"Jonathan McKee's
THE GUY'S GUIDE TO GOD, GIRLS, AND THE PHONE IN YOUR POCKET is refreshingly brutal. As a mom, sometimes it's hard to know what's going through your teen son's head when it comes to anything. That's where Jonathan comes in. With a casual and warm tone, he advises boys on how to live--from the more superficial (yet important) how to smell and sleep to the heavier advice on how not to get entangled in porn, how to worship, and how to take ownership of everyday tasks. The lessons are brief and accessible. This book is a must-have for modern boys."

-Nancy French,
New York Times Best-Selling Author

“Face it: You’ve outgrown diaries for ‘wimpy kids’ and so-called
dangerous books for boys. Now it’s time for some brutal honesty; some meaty, man-sized chunks of wisdom every guy must hear: secrets about God, girls, grooming, friends, faith. . .and what it means to be ‘a man after God’s own heart.’ This book delivers! Buy a copy for yourself and another for a friend, and take to heart the good stuff packed in these pages.”

―Michael Ross, bestselling author of
Worry-Free Living and a former youth editor at Focus on the Family

This book is amazing! It’s a series of short Q&A essays to not only help teens learn how to conquer their choices God’s way but also what to look for so they don’t start heading down the wrong path.
My favorite part? As a girl reading it hit me that they weren’t pulled together in a specific format but then it hit me that the book reminded me of a conversation with my teen sons. Short. To the Point. No Fluff. Just Facts. Perfect for a teen’s brain! -- Regina Hott ―

I read this book because I have a pre-teen son who is already having questions and concerns about not only becoming a man, but becoming a Godly man. This book was extremely helpful with all his questions and topics I didn't even know we SHOULD be discussing with him! It will definitely be a book that we will be referencing over and over again throughout his teenage years and also when his younger brother becomes a teenager. I will definitely be sharing this book with the youth pastors at my church! -- Jennifer Cabrera ―

Great book; Not appropriate for 10 year old
4 out of 5 stars
Great book; Not appropriate for 10 year old
This book has some good topics overall. Fortunately Dad and I decided to browse through it before handing it over to our 10 (almost 11) year old . See pictures from pages 22, 23. We quickly decided to tuck this away in the top of our closet for another few years. These pages excluded, overall it does look like it will be a good book and addresses several topics like managing your screen time, respecting yourself, being kind to others/having a good heart, being responsible for your own behavior, etc. Pgd 22 & 23 just kind of freaked dad and I out a bit.

McKee does an excellent job of using modern day real world situations that our teens deal with daily. This book would be excellent for a small group boys study or a father and son study. Each chapter is easy to read and short. At the end is a list of applicable questions to make you think about what was covered in the chapter. The best part is that McKee pulls scripture into each chapter and clearly shows what the Word of God says about a particular topic. As a mom of two young sons I am thankful for someone who always stays relevant to what our children face day to day. McKee is also not afraid to tackle some very touchy subjects head on with Godly direction. Sometimes in the church we are afraid to talk about certain things because it makes us uncomfortable or maybe we just don't know the answer. This book will help you talk through some of those difficult things with your son.

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to become closer to their son. It's perfect for those difficult topics and knowing what the Word of God says. Very insightful and thoughtful. Would make a great gift for a young tween or teen boy or a group study for boys.

Jonathan McKee has written an excellent guide for today's teenage guys! This book has a great mix of wisdom on all aspects of a teenager's life: relationships, technology, self-image, hygiene, relationship with Jesus, etc. Jonathan dispenses wisdom using a direct approach that I think will appeal to his intended audience. He does a great job of varying the topics that he addresses and each tip is to the point but also thorough.

Here is a sampling of some of the topics he addresses:
    1. Do you want to attract girls? Brush your teeth!
    2. Be careful what you allow on your playlists.
    3. Shave that fuzz you call a mustache.
    4. Speeding doesn't show a guy's masculinity; it reveals his immaturity.
    5. God sees everything you do, so you might as well get real with him.
    6. If you want to be a better man, be a better disciple of Jesus.
    7. You aren't the future of the church ... you are the church now!

I greatly appreciate that Jonathan includes questions for the reader to ask himself in each tip. Instead of merely dispensing information, the reader is given questions to prompt him to stop and consider the information he just read and how it applies to his life. He also includes scripture and questions to unpack the verses. There is not scripture included in every tip which would make it a good resource for those who are new to the Christian faith as well as those who are more spiritually mature.

As a youth worker, I see several ways that this book could be utilized. If you lead a guys small group, this would be a great resource for leaders. You could share one or two tips at the beginning of your small group time to warm up the guys for whatever lesson you have planned for the evening. If you are in a mentoring relationship with a teenage guy this would be a great resource for the mentor and mentee to read together and discuss. This would also make a great gift for a guy going into high school or heading off to college. This book would also be a great tool for fathers to use with their sons.

I have one MAJOR problem with this book - it was written at at time when my son is only 18 months old and I want him to read it NOW! So I guess that means I also have one MAJOR win with this book ... IT WAS WRITTEN! The good news for me is that I have read it and intend to communicate much of this truth to him as he develops.

It is so difficult to find a book, written for guys, that is not embarrassing to give to guys (or anyone for that matter). I know this may be hard to believe but some books are just difficult to read, or goofy (and I don't mean in a positive way) or just plain dumb. This makes it very hard to give them to anyone because you are, in a sense, putting your own relationship and credibility on the line to do so.

I am blessed to work with youth on a daily basis and I WILL be recommending this book to every young man that I know for some time to come, in fact I will be going further and simply putting a copy in their hands asking them to read it along with me ... it is what all guys need to hear written in a way that we are able to receive it. Funny, witty, straight up, raw, and often times very blunt - but not in a way that makes anyone want to run away, rather in a way that makes us sit up and take note.

Jonathan's writing style keeps attention - it is genuine, so readers know that he cares - ENOUGH to say the hard stuff, enough to say the awkward stuff, and enough to say the funny stuff as well - see "Don't text and drive until you've learn to juggle straight razors nude" and "learn to recognize Ms Hyde" for examples of this.

I must confess, reading this book made me feel the same as when I read through much of the book of Proverbs - I'm not saying this book is scripture - I'm saying that it comes across simply as advice from a father to a son - just as much of proverbs does. Heed the advice, live it, apply it ... And if/when you have a son, share it with him!

I will be looking for an updated version of this book in about 11 - 12 years to give to my son, but in the meantime I will be directing many to the "Guy's Guide to God, Girls and the Phone in Your Pocket".

I do not give 5 star reviews often - alright, ever ... but this one gets it. Thanks for the honest, captivating, and needed writing!

Thought I'd be the first to read this in my house ... Until one of my teen got ahold of it "This is practical stuff that you need to know but don't always want to ask, where can I get a copy?" For a kid that barely reads, that's saying something. Really appreciate his insights and down to earth approaches to the things my guys struggle with, get confronted with and need to make, at time touch, choices on.
