In your first lesson, Chris walks through many benefits of picking up stitches with care. You'll learn the differences between edgings and facings and get some practice by making the swatches used for other lessons.
It's time to pick up the pace! Start this lesson off with techniques for picking up along straight edges as Chris demonstrates techniques for both vertical and horizontal edging, handy skills for working along the sides and bottom of your project. Picking up in straight and curved lines at once can be challenging, but don't worry! Chris will show you how to make quick work of these situations. You'll learn to pick up for stepped bind-offs, shirttail edges, and armholes. Plus, you'll even get tips for working in different stitch patterns!
Need ideas to spice up your pattern after picking up stitches? Chris shares several options for custom applied edgings: a simple and sleek minimal edge, classic and flexible ribbing, and the versatile reverse rolled edge. She'll even show you how to easily create an applied I-cord!

During class, you’ll learn to work horizontally or vertically along a straight edge, pick up for new stitches along a curved edge and handle both types of edges at once. Along the way, you’ll discover how to easily expand upon and add necklines, shirttail edges and hems. Plus, Chris will teach you how to create a variety of primary and applied edgings, add structure to your projects “behind the scenes” and more.

Chris retired from a career in marketing communications and advertising to pursue her artistic passions, knitting and textureplay, and enjoy a little gardening with her husband, Charlie. Instead, she is having a wonderful time teaching workshops from coast to coast and beyond for TNNA, shops, guilds, cruises and conferences and has her own line of knitting patterns. She also has designed knit garments for the American Girl clothing line and has been featured in Vogue Knitting, Knit Simple, Creative Knitting and Knit n' Style. In her teaching role, Chris' reward is when knitters discover and trust their own creativity. She encourages knitters to "color outside the lines," where it's more fun! Chris firmly believes that knitting is not construction. Knitters should explore and make mistakes, feel free to change their minds and most of all, enjoy what they are doing.
