    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Mazda 3 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Display screen freezes up

"The scroll button gets stuck and I cannot use the display screen."

    Anonymous, CA (2017 Mazda 3 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"When the display screen froze up, I was unable to make a phone call access g. P. S Adjust volume on the radio or do anything with the electronic system."

Anonymous, DE (2017 Mazda 3 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The display screen stopped working correctly after about 3-4 years of ownership. It freezes, restarts, and ghost controls radio station and fast forward. Im often not able to control it myself. Even on long drives, it may continue to restart every 2-10 minutes for an hour."

    Anonymous A., CA (2017 Mazda 3 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Display screen goes blank

"The issue began with the infotainment system intermittently restarting. Specifically, the screen would go black and the Mazda logo would appear, as if we had just started the car. The radio us unaffected by the restart and continues to play sound, but while it's restarting, it does not respond to commands like channel changes. If the system is playing audio from a phone connected via Bluetooth, it cuts out and the device loses its Bluetooth connection to the car. At first, it seemed like it was related to the temperature of the car. On hot days, the restart was more frequent. Now, however, the system continuously restarts, rendering the infotainment system useless. The restarts are seemingly independent of temperature, at least independent of any ambient temperatures in the state of Florida."

    Anonymous, FL (2017 Mazda 3 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Basically what I said previously. Luckily the backup camera hasn't gone blank while using it."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Mazda 3 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Hardware replacement

"The gps/nav/infotainment system was a known problem prior to 2017. It changed functions on its own- ghost touching. Mazda refused to replace on 2017 on. Cost $2000 to replace with only a 1 yr warranty."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Mazda 3 Grand Touring Unsure)
    Heads-up display

"the display screen changes by itself and changes the radio features also the display screen looks cracked and is unusable but since vehicle is out of warranty when it started Mazda dealership did not want to remedy problem other than that is a great vehicle have been using it like that for 3 years now but is annoying not to be able to listen to music or radio or to change settings"

    Anonymous, (2017 Mazda 3 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Stopped working completely after 7 years of ownership. Displays nothing."

    Anonymous A., CA (2017 Mazda 3 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"when we went on vacation and left the car in the garage. when we returned we noticed the display screen had internal spider cracks in it. we figured due to the heat inside the car while we were gone due to the heat extremes here in texas. heard that this is a known problem but mazda did issue a fix for it. only option was to buy a new display. not cost effective for us to buy. the display still works but hard to see it during the daytime."

    Anonymous, TX (2017 Mazda 3 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The Display Screen has cracked. Multiple cracks. Not well made. It still functions though."

    Anonymous A., FL (2017 Mazda 3 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Over-the-air software update failed

"We keep getting "unable to import" a lot. It's sporadic. Sometimes it'll take 20 minutes for the software to pull up navigation. When it does cut out, if you're on the phone you loose audio and have to put the phone speaker on. Also when just starting out the radio or blue tooth channel will go back to where it was prior to the new channel."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Mazda 3 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Premature brake wear

"Last Fall I had to have the rotors and brake pads replaced at around 48400 km. This was the second time I had needed to do this, even though I never brake aggressively."

    Anonymous, QC (2017 Mazda 3 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Rotors

    "replaced worn-out brakes and rotors"

    Anonymous A., CA (2017 Mazda 3 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

    Fuel System/Emissions

Sensors (O₂, or oxygen, sensor), emission-control devices (includes EGR), fuel-injection system, fuel gauge/sender, fuel pump, problems filling up the tank.

    What Owners Say

    Fuel pump

"About a year ago I started noticing sometimes when I braked in traffic or for a red light, the engine didnt respond to my pushing down on the gas pedal to start up again for sometimes a few or several seconds. No pattern to it except as mentioned. It did seem to happen more frequently over the year so the garage I took it to read the computer, and replaced the throttle position sensor which neccesitated the replacement of the accelerator pedal assembly as the TPS is part of same on this car. Seems OK so far, only have been driving the car for about a week since the repair. ."

    Anonymous A., WA (2017 Mazda 3 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There was a crack in the housing which caused an odour of gasoline and small Leak. The garage said it was a common fail point for this model and year"

    Anonymous, (2017 Mazda 3 SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Body Hardware

Windows, locks and latches, doors or sliding doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls (power or manual), seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, glass defect.

    What Owners Say

Fuel door or charge port door

"The fuel door latch spring seems to be stuck intermittently, preventing closure after filling the tank."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Mazda 3 Grand Touring Unsure)
    Seat controls - manual

"Probably worst seat controls since my MGA in my early 20s.What all those wires are for, tangled under the driver's seat is a mystery.there is no height adjustment. The length adjustment is reluctant. You had better not have spinal issues if you attempt to change the abrupt and cranky seatback setting. In addition, the front pillars of the cabin ,especially the passenger side ,block a substantial part of the driver's right side view. The placement of the right side view mirror compounds this safety issue."

    Anonymous A., WA (2017 Mazda 3 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

    Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

    What Owners Say

    Keyless entry

"key stopped functioning entirely, either to open the locked door or to start the engine. It went downhill over time, so I was able to enter the car with the physical key and get it to start one time so I could drive it to the dealer. The dealer replaced the key battery. That fixed the problem."

    Anonymous, MD (2017 Mazda 3 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Remote engine starter

"Already discussed the problem with the key not starting the engine (see key entry problem)"

    Anonymous, MD (2017 Mazda 3 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Engine rebuild or replacement

"Stop at red light, then engine shut down by itself and will not restart. Car was tolled back to the dealership, after four days of complete checks with the engine, found out theres a crack at one of the cylinder head. Case reported to the main office and determined the issue is really rare. Mazda USA decided to replace the whole engine and I have to pay 1000.- deductible since the vehicle has already pass the warranty period"

    Anonymous A., (2017 Mazda 3 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
