"The Fields of Athenry" is an Irish folk ballad set during the Great Irish Famine (1845–1850) about a fictional man named Michael from near Athenry in County Galway who has been sentenced to transportation to Botany Bay, Australia, for stealing food for his starving family. It is a widely known and popular anthem for Irish sports supporters.
History
"The Fields of Athenry" was written in the 1970s by Pete St. John. A claim was made in 1996 that a broadsheet ballad published in the 1880s had similar words; however, the folklorist and researcher John Moulden found no basis to this claim, and Pete St. John has stated that he wrote the words as well as the music.
The song was first recorded in 1979 by Danny Doyle, reaching the top ten in the Irish Singles Chart. The song charted again in 1982 for Barleycorn, reaching number seven in Ireland, but the most successful version was released by Paddy Reilly in 1982. While peaking only at number four, it remained in the Irish charts for 72 weeks. Two further versions have since reached the Irish top ten: the Cox Crew getting to number five in 1999, while Dance to Tipperary peaked at number six in 2001.

David Stewart is an award-winning freelance bass trombonist, and music teacher based in London.
Biography
David Stewart was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and studied with Peter Gane at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He was also a member of the National Youth Orchestra.
He was the winner of the 1983 Shell/LSO brass competition and has been a member of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and London Philharmonic Orchestra (1998–2005). He also performs with London Brass.
Often seen in the commercial and recording world, Stewart has worked with Quincy Jones, Kenny Wheeler, Mike Gibbs, John Surman and Natalie Cole. His film credits include Lord of the Rings (complete), the last five James Bond films, The Golden Compass, and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.
Stewart has played in The Sound of Music in London's West End since it opened in November 2006.
He has also played for many others including Robbie Williams, Elton John, Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell, S Club 7 and S Club Juniors.
Athenry (/æθənˈraɪ/;Irish: Baile Átha an Rí, meaning "Ford of the King") is a town in County Galway, Ireland. It lies 25 kilometres (16 mi) east of Galway city, and one of the attractions of the medieval town is its town wall, castle, priory and 13th century Anglo-Norman street-plan. The town is also well known by virtue of the song "The Fields of Athenry".
History
Its name derives from the ford ('Áth') crossing the river Clarin just east of the settlement. Because three kingdoms met at that point, it was called 'Áth na Ríogh', or 'the Ford of the Kings'. On some medieval maps of English origin the town is called Kingstown. The kingdoms were Hy-Many to the north-east, east and south-east; Aidhne to the south and south-west; Maigh Seola to the west and north-west. Up to around 1000 it was included in Uí Briúin Seóla. In the mid-11th century it was part of the trícha cét of Clann Taidg.
Athenry was a constituency represented in the Irish House of Commons to 1800.
History
Sir Thomas Cusack, former Lord Chancellor of Ireland, represented Athenry in the first Irish Parliament of Elizabeth I.
In the Patriot Parliament of 1689 summoned by King James II, Athenry was represented with two members.
