The Crescent was a part-completed, Regency-style terrace in central Birmingham, England, first proposed in 1788, started and discontinued in 1795, and finally demolished in the mid- to late 1960s. Like other late 18th and early 19th century crescent terraces in Britain and Ireland, it took its inspiration from The Crescent (later Royal Crescent), Bath designed by John Wood the Younger and built 1767 to 1774.
The developer in Birmingham was Charles Norton and the architect was John Rawsthorne. The 1,182-foot (360 m) long residential scheme was to have 23 stone-built townhouses in a central block of 622 feet (190 m), plus more in two wings (each 140 feet (43 m)), and a return to Cambridge Street (141 feet (43 m)).
Only twelve of the houses, mostly in the two wings, were built by 1795, when a building depression resulting from the war with France brought construction to a stop. Work never resumed and eventually other buildings (including a factory known as "Crescent Works") were erected on the site, in a street called "The Crescent", following the original curved layout. The Crescent ran north of, and roughly parallel to, the present Cambridge Street, the concave side facing northwards from a hilltop, overlooking the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal (completed in August 1789), and the area now known as Ladywood, which was the countryside. A later canal wharf between The Crescent and the canal was named "Crescent Wharf", and the vista became filled with factories and workshops.
The Crescent were an English indie rock band formed in 2000 by bassist Sean Longsworth and drummer Joey Harrison from Huyton, Merseyside. The band were noted as "most famous for being protegees of lost La Lee Mavers".
Career
Longsworth and Harrison were still in their teens when they formed The Crescent. They were soon joined by guitarist Karl Rowlands. The band backed fellow Huytonian Lee Mavers, formerly of The La's, at rehearsals which did not make it onto the gigs. However, Mavers erratic personality soon led to difficulties.
After singer-songwriter Wayne Whitfield joined the band they were signed by Hut Records. Their debut single, "On The Run" made the Top 50 in the UK Singles Chart in May 2002. Two further singles followed, each reaching the UK chart, before a self-titled album was released in September 2002.
Their track "Spinnin' Wheels" was featured on the 2002 Virgin/EMI compilation, The Album: Volume 4.

Rear Admiral Mark Anderson CB is a former Royal Navy officer who served as Commander Operations and Rear Admiral, Submarines.
Naval career
Educated at the University of Manchester, Anderson joined the Royal Navy in 1974 and was appointed commanding officer of the submarine HMS Talent in 1993. He became Military Assistant to the Chief of Defence Logistics in May 2000, Commanding Officer of the frigate HMS Marlborough as well as Captain of the 4th Frigate Squadron in August 2002 and Director Equipment Capability (Underwater Effects) in March 2003 before moving on to become the Chief of the Defence Staff's Liaison Officer to the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee in July 2007 and Commander Operations and Rear Admiral, Submarines in January 2009. He retired from the Royal Navy in March 2011.
In retirement he became Strategy Director of Sonar & Undersea Systems and then Group Marketing Director at Ultra Electronics.
