The Canadian Jewish News (CJN) is a non-profit, national, English-language tabloid-sized newspaper serving Canada's Jewish community. The national edition of the newspaper is published in Toronto. A weekly Montreal edition in English with some French began its run in 1976.

History

The Canadian Jewish News was founded by M. J. Nurenberger, a friend of Menachem Begin and supporter of his Herut party, and his wife Dorothy and was first published on Friday, January 1, 1960 and was the first exclusively English-language Jewish newspaper published in Ontario.

The CJN was considered a "provocative" paper into the 1970s but was later considered something of a "lapdog for the community". The original CJN hewed a line that supported the right in Israeli politics and was critical of the liberal leadership of the Canadian Jewish community at the time as well as community institutions such as B'nai Brith and the United Jewish Appeal, the latter for its secrecy in how it dispersed money. According to his daughter, Atara Beck, “He believed that a newspaper should be a thorn in the side of the establishment.”

Jewish News One, or JN1, was an international news network covering world news with a focus on Judaism-related events. The channel was of Ukrainian origin. Its primary mission was to report Jewish and Israeli current affairs without bias, and according to spokesmen, JN1 could accomplish this because it is an independent, non-profit organisation which does not depend on any nation, government, or political party. Their slogan was Informing Opinion, Expanding horizons. JN1 began broadcasting on 21 September 2011, and organisers called it the first global 24/7 Jewish news channel. However, JN1 was more commonly referred to as the "Jewish al Jazeera". It was closed in April 2014, being replaced by Ukraine News One. As of April 2015 JN1.tv has become part of JewishNews.com

History

Background

JN1 was not affiliated with and receives no funding from the government of Israel. The network was owned by Ukrainian billionaires Igor Kolomoisky and Vadim Rabinovich, president and vice-president respectively of the European Jewish Union (EJU), a Brussels-based umbrella body of Jewish communities and organisations in Europe. They have reportedly invested $5 million USD in the channel. Both businessmen are prominent philanthropists in the international Jewish community, financing civil society events in Israel and Ukraine. They decided to launch a TV news network because, according to Brussels Bureau Chief Alexander Zanzer, "they now want to do something that resonates on an international level."

A Jewish newspaper is a newspaper which focuses on topics of special interest to Jews, although Jewish newspapers generally include articles on topics of a more general interest as well. Political orientations and religious orientations cover a wide range.

The Canadian (Le Canadien) is a Canadian transcontinental passenger train operated by Via Rail Canada with service between Union Station in Toronto, Ontario, and Pacific Central Station in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Before 1955 the Canadian was a Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) train between Toronto and Chicago. In 1955 CPR renamed its transcontinental route between Montreal/Toronto and Vancouver the Canadian, with new streamlined trains. Via Rail took over in 1978, and in 1990 reduced the Canadian to Toronto - Vancouver service primarily along Canadian National tracks.

Canadian Pacific

Le Canadien (French pronunciation: ​[lə kanadjɛ̃]) was a French language newspaper published in Lower Canada from November 22, 1806 to March 14, 1810. Its motto was: "Nos institutions, notre langue et nos droits" (Our institutions, our language, our rights). It was released every Saturday and the yearly subscription was of 10 chelins or shillings.

History

The newspaper was founded in Quebec City by lawyer Pierre-Stanislas Bédard and associates François Blanchet, Jean-Antoine Panet, Jean-Thomas Taschereau and Joseph Le Vasseur Borgia. All were members of the Parliament of Lower Canada at the time. The editor was Jean-Antoine Bouthillier. The newspaper quickly became the voice of the Parti canadien in their battle against the English party and the government of governor James Craig.

On March 17, 1810, the press and the papers of the editorial office on rue Saint-François were seized by the government. The printer Charles Lefrançois was imprisoned and a patrol searched the city for conspirators. The Quebec Mercury had previously insinuated that the French Canadians and the Americans were plotting against England. Two days later, no conspirators had been found. Bédard, Blanchet and Taschereau were arrested and also jailed.

The Canadian is an extant 1926 silent film drama produced by Famous Players-Lasky and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It is based on a 1913 Broadway play, The Land of Promise, by W. Somerset Maugham. The film was directed by William Beaudine and starred Thomas Meighan. Meighan had costarred with Billie Burke in a 1917 silent film based on the same story, The Land of Promise. In both films he plays the same part. This film is preserved in the Library of Congress.
