The fourth season of Prison Break, an American serial drama television series commenced airing in the United States on September 1, 2008. It consists of 24 episodes (22 television episodes and 2 straight to DVD episodes), 16 of which aired from September to December 2008. After a hiatus, it resumed on April 17, 2009 and concluded on May 15, 2009 with a two episode finale.

Production

On January 13, 2009, Fox president Kevin Reilly confirmed the series would end at the conclusion of this season. He explained, "Prison Break got to a point where a lot of the stories had been told." At the time, he said there was a possibility of adding two extra episodes, he said "We want to finish strong." These extra two episodes became Prison Break: The Final Break, although they never aired on Fox, and became available only on DVD.

The show's third season went on hiatus over the 2007 Christmas period because of the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike. It resumed on January 14, 2008, and the last five episodes of the season were aired. The fourth season, consisting of 22 episodes, began airing in September 2008, stopped in December 2008, and resumed on April 17, 2009.

The two brothers escape prison in the first season, but are hunted down during the second season and ultimately Michael is recaptured and sent to a Panamanian jail, Penitenciaría Federal de Sona, at the end of the second season. The third season revolves around Michael's breakout from Sona with several other inmates.

For the season, three characters are removed, and four new characters are added as series regulars. Filming continued to take place in Dallas, Texas.

Season synopsis

In the Season 4 premiere, Ross decides to break up with Bonnie to get back together with Rachel, who writes him a letter. However, Ross is too tired to read the 18-page letter in the early hours of dawn, but his desire to get back with Rachel is such that he lied about reading it to her the next morning. Upon realizing that the letter had stated that Rachel is willing to reconcile with Ross only on condition that he accepts full responsibility for their previous break-up, he opposes. They break up again due to Rachel's continuous mention of the letter and Ross not being able to continue having Rachel think that he has taken responsibility for their first break up.
