A playing card is a piece of specially prepared heavy paper, thin cardboard, plastic-coated paper, cotton-paper blend, or thin plastic, marked with distinguishing motifs and used as one of a set for playing card games. Playing cards are typically palm-sized for convenient handling.
A complete set of cards is called a pack (UK English), deck (US English), or set (Universal), and the subset of cards held at one time by a player during a game is commonly called a hand. A pack of cards may be used for playing a variety of card games, with varying elements of skill and chance, some of which are played for money (e.g., poker and blackjack games at a casino). Playing cards are also used for illusions, cardistry, building card structures, cartomancy and memory sport.
The front (or "face") of each card carries markings that distinguish it from the other cards in the pack and determine its use under the rules of the game being played. The back of each card is identical for all cards in any particular pack to create an imperfect information scenario. Usually every card will be smooth; however, some packs have braille to allow blind people to read the card number and suit.
The Scaffold were a comedy, poetry and music trio from Liverpool, England, consisting of Mike McGear (real name Peter Michael McCartney, the brother of Paul McCartney), Roger McGough and John Gorman.
The Scaffold performed a mixture of comic songs, comedy sketches and the poetry of McGough, as evidenced on their 1968 live album, and released a number of singles and albums on Parlophone and EMI between 1966 and 1971, with several more on Island, Warner Bros. and Bronze thereafter.
The group also wrote and sang the theme tune to the BBC comedy 'The Liver Birds' which aired from 1969–1978.
The Scaffold achieved Top 10 success in the UK with:
Empty Sky is the début album by British singer-songwriter Elton John, released on 6 June 1969. It was finally released in the US in January 1975, with a different cover photograph, well after John's fame had been established internationally.
Recorded during the winter of 1968 and spring of 1969 in a DJM 8-track studio, Empty Sky is the only album in the early part of his career not produced by Gus Dudgeon, instead helmed by friend and DJM staffer Steve Brown. The album was released in the UK in both stereo and mono with the latter now being a rare collector's item.
John plays harpsichord on several tracks, including "Skyline Pigeon", which John has described as being "the first song Bernie and I ever got excited about that we ever wrote."
John used musicians that were either his or Brown's friends. Guitarist Caleb Quaye and drummer Roger Pope, both members of the band Hookfoot at the time, played on many of the tracks. (Quaye and Pope would rejoin John a few years later as part of his studio and touring band behind Rock of the Westies in 1975 and Blue Moves in 1976.) Tony Murray from The Troggs played bass. Empty Sky is the first appearance with John of then Plastic Penny and Spencer Davis Group member Nigel Olsson, who played drums on "Lady What's Tomorrow?" (Olsson and fellow Spencer Davis bandmate, bassist Dee Murray, would soon join John as his early '70s touring band.) Also listed in the production credits is Clive Franks, who would later produce John's live sound in concert for a tremendous amount of his touring career, as well as occasionally co-produce with John on albums such as A Single Man and 21 at 33. The original sleeve design was done by David Larkham (billed as "Dave"), who would go on to create designs for John and other artists.
No one could have known that you would end in
this way
You gotta face it, it's the end
This world knows no right, they wouldn't see what
is truth
They won't believe you're not to blame
No one can say - what's coming your way
And there ain't no way out
They're all looking down
No one makes no sound
Why must it end all in this way, why, why, why?
The torture's been surmounted now
you told them all they wanted
The pain you've overcome somehow
but what'll come from now on?
Dyin' and rotting will be your destiny
Sooner than nature planned
Where are those who loved you they all turned away
And no one will shed a tear
Chorus:
Raise up your eyes
The scaffold awaits
Truth tells no lies
The scaffold awaits
You're left alone in agony
The death blow awaits you
The public is your enemy
For crime someone must pay
Lying is right - it's an antinomy
But no one gives a shit
What is it, this mankind, a crowd of betrayers
Fearing for their own lives?
Chorus
Dyin' and rotting will be your destiny
sooner than nature planned
You thought that someone loved you, but they let an
innocent die
Chorus
Good or evil - it's in their minds
But they're so careless, though you've been kind
Take care of treason, kiss on your cheek
They got perception, but they're too weak
So many voices outside the room
They're waiting for you, await your doom
Lay down your head now - you're gonna die
