The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (Filipino: Politeknikong Unibersidad ng Pilipinas; abbreviated as PUP and commonly known as PUP Main, PUP Sta. Mesa and PUP Manila) is a coeducational, research state university located in Santa Mesa, Manila, Philippines. It was founded on October 19, 1904 as the Manila Business School, under the Division of City Schools – Manila as the city's business school. PUP is also known as the country's 1st PolytechnicU.
PUP Manila has 48,213 students enrolled. It is also the flagship campus and the seat of administration of the PUP System, the country's largest university in terms of geographical reach and student population, which has an estimated of 80,000 students as of 2015. It confers diploma, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, and is composed of a graduate school, a distance learning education program, 14 colleges, two high school departments including a laboratory school, and the Institute of Technology.

The Philippines (i/ˈfɪlᵻpiːnz/; Filipino: Pilipinas [ˌpɪlɪˈpinɐs]), officially known as the Republic of the Philippines (Filipino: Republika ng Pilipinas), is a sovereign island country in Southeast Asia situated in the western Pacific Ocean. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and close to the equator makes the Philippines prone to earthquakes and typhoons, but also endows it with abundant natural resources and some of the world's greatest biodiversity. At approximately 300,000 square kilometers (115,831 sq mi), the Philippines is the 72nd-largest country in the world.

New York University Tandon School of Engineering is one of the schools and colleges that comprise New York University (NYU). Founded in 1854, the school is the second oldest private engineering and technology school in the United States. Curriculum is based on a polytechnic university model emphasizing instruction of technical arts and applied sciences. The school's main campus is in Brooklyn's MetroTech Center, an urban academic-industrial research park. In 2015, the school had the 19th largest graduate engineering student population in the United States.
History
On May 17, 1853, a group of Brooklyn businessmen wrote a charter to establish a school for young men. Named Brooklyn Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute, the school moved into its first home at 99 Livingston Street in Brooklyn. The first class, admitted in 1855, consisted of 265 young men ages nine to 17. The school conferred its first bachelor's degrees in 1871. Graduate programs began in 1901 and the school awarded its first doctoral degree in 1921. From 1889 to 1973 the school became known as Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. In 1917, the preparatory program separated from the Institute and became the Polytechnic Preparatory Country Day School. Poly Prep is now located in the Dyker Heights section of Brooklyn. Polytechnic Institute moved to its present location in 1957, the former site of the American Safety Razor Company factory, where it became a co-educational institution. In the early 1970s New York University faced financial hardships leading it to sell its University Heights campus that housed NYU's engineering school. Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn acquired the faculty, programs and students of New York University's School of Engineering and Science in 1973 to form Polytechnic Institute of New York. Polytechnic Institute of New York gained university status in 1985 and changed its name to Polytechnic University.
The University of the Philippines (UP; Filipino: Unibersidad ng Pilipinas or Pamantasan ng Pilipinas) is a public university system in the Philippines. Founded by the American colonial government on June 18, 1908, it was originally a university conceived for the Filipinos. Act No. 1870 of the 1st Philippine Legislature was signed to establish UP to provide "advanced instruction in literature, philosophy, the sciences and arts, and to give professional and technical training" to eligible students regardless of "age, sex, nationality, religious belief and political affiliation". UP has institutional autonomy as the country's national university as mandated by Republic Act No. 9500 (UP Charter of 2008).
The University of the Philippines has 7 constituent universities (CUs), 1 autonomous college and 4 basic education schools located in 15 campuses across the country. The first UP opened in Manila in 1909 with the Colleges of Fine Arts, and Medicine and Surgery; UP Los Baños was also initiated as the UP College of Agriculture in the same year. 5 other constituent universities have since been established; the latest since 2002 is UP Baguio, despite being formed 41 years earlier (in 1961). UP Diliman, the fourth CU which was established in 1949, is the flagship campus and seat of administration of the University of the Philippines.
The University of the Philippines Open University (also referred to as UPOU, UP Open University, or UP OpenU) is a public research university and distance learning institution headquartered in Los Baños, Laguna. It was established on February 23, 1995 as the fifth constituent university of the University of the Philippines System. Its mandate is to provide education opportunities to individuals aspiring for higher education and improved qualifications but were unable to take advantage of traditional modes of education because of personal and professional obligations. It is recognized as the country's top open and distance learning institution by virtue of Republic Act No. 10650, also known as the Open and Distance Learning Act of 2014
