MedStar Health is a not-for-profit healthcare organization. It operates more than 120 entities, including ten hospitals in the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area of the United States. It is the employer with the largest number of local employees in that area.

MedStar contributes approximately $111 million in payroll tax to the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia each year. Additionally, as of 2012, MedStar Health provided almost $312 million in charity care and community benefit on an annual basis.

History

In 1998, Medlantic Healthcare Group merged with Helix Health, a group of four Baltimore, Maryland hospitals. Helix/Medlantic was renamed MedStar Health on February 1, 1999.

On July 1, 2000, Georgetown University Hospital became part of MedStar Health.

On February 1, 2008, MedStar Health merged with Montgomery General Hospital, Montgomery County's oldest acute care hospital. Montgomery General was the eighth hospital in MedStar Health’s network and the first hospital in Montgomery County to join the healthcare system.

St. Mary's Hospital is a 440-bed not-for-profit hospital located in Madison, Wisconsin that serves 18 surrounding south-central Wisconsin counties. It is a part of the SSM Health Care system based in St. Louis. Sister hospitals in Wisconsin include St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo and St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital.

History

SSM Health Care traces its roots to 1872, when Mother Mary Odilia Berger and four other sisters came to St. Louis from Germany, after caring for sick and wounded soldiers during the Franco-Prussian War. Facing religious persecution in Germany, they came to the United States. When they arrived in St. Louis they began providing nursing care to people in their own homes. That winter, when a smallpox epidemic hit St. Louis, the sisters cared for the sick and dying. For a short time, people referred to them as the Smallpox Sisters. In 1874, the congregation received its formal name: the Sisters of St. Mary (SSM).

Forty years later, eight sisters followed Mother Odilia's mission when they arrived in Wisconsin at the request of several Madison physicians and local clergy to establish a "Sisters' Hospital" for the city of Madison. Through the vision and hard work of the sisters, four physicians and four lay nurses, St. Mary's Hospital opened its doors and its 70 beds on September 22, 1912.

St Mary's, Luton, is an Anglican Church in the centre of the town of Luton, England. The church has a rich and long history, being over 850 years old and has been rebuilt and refurbished constantly over the centuries. The Church is one of the largest in Bedfordshire and considered a fine example of medieval architecture. The Church is part of the St Albans Diocese.

Original church

The site of St Mary's has been the centre of worship for people in the area for over 1,000 years, and a church was built in about 930 AD by King Athelstan as an act of thanksgiving for victory over the Danes. The land here was owned by the king in Saxon and early Norman times and the church was very richly endowed.

12th century

The current site of the church itself was built by Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester in 1121 and consecrated in 1137. The original structure of the church was a cruciform without aisles, but with the increases in population, the north and south aisles were added within 40 years of each other around the start of the 13th century.

St. Mary's station in St. Marys, Ontario, Canada is a station for Via Rail trains running from Toronto west to Sarnia. The town of St. Marys is served by 4 passenger trains daily. Eastbound train VIA 84 stops at 0757, and eastbound train VIA 88 stops at 2036. Westbound train VIA 85 stops at 1336 and westbound train VIA 87 stops at 20:23. Reservations are required 40 minutes in advance of trains 84 & 87 for those trains to stop at the station.

The International Limited was operated jointly by Via Rail and Amtrak between Chicago and Toronto. The service, which had started in 1982, was discontinued in 2004.
