"Martha's Harbour" is the 1988 hit single by British rock group, All About Eve. It has become known as the group's signature song, reaching #10 in the UK Singles Chart and helping the group's self-titled debut album reach #7 in the UK albums chart. The song was highly unusual for a 1980s pop hit, featuring only Julianne Regan's voice, acoustic guitars played by Tim Bricheno and background sound effects of the sea.
The song is also well known for an incident on the popular BBC UK music show Top of the Pops, when the group, ready to do a mimed (as was BBC policy at the time) performance of their hit, were not played the backing track through their monitors, and so sat motionless while the television and studio audience could hear the song. Due to this error on the part of the BBC, the band were invited back the following week and insisted on playing the song live.
On its creation, Julianne Regan has said, in an interview on BBC radio, "This song happened by accident when we were recording the first album. It was one of those things when we had the day off and we were sat in this very idyllic setting beneath a willow tree besides a stream by this beautiful residential recording studio and it just came out so naturally. It was a miracle of a little song and it's very dear to us because of that, because it was very pure, a really happy accident. Everybody went to the pub and we put it down and by the time they got back Martha's Harbour was committed to tape. Martha's Harbour is a fictitious backdrop for this happening."
Martha of Bethany (Aramaic: מַרְתָּא Martâ) is a biblical figure described in the Gospels of Luke and John. Together with her siblings Lazarus and Mary, she is described as living in the village of Bethany near Jerusalem. She was witness to Jesus' resurrection of her brother, Lazarus.
The name Martha is a Latin transliteration of the Koine Greek Μάρθα, itself a translation of the Aramaic מַרְתָּא Martâ, "The mistress" or "the lady", from מרה "mistress", feminine of מר "master". The Aramaic form occurs in a Nabatean inscription found at Puteoli, and now in the Naples Museum; it is dated AD. 5 (Corpus Inscr. Semit., 158); also in a Palmyrene inscription, where the Greek translation has the form Marthein.
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus visits the home of two sisters named Mary and Martha. The two sisters are contrasted: Martha was "cumbered about many things" while Jesus was their guest, while Mary had chosen "the better part", that of listening to the master's discourse. The name of their village is not recorded, nor any mention of whether Jesus was near Jerusalem:
Saint Martha (died 551) was the mother of Simeon Stylites the Younger. She is venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church on July 4.
When her parents betrothed her to a young man, she seriously considered leaving home and withdrawing from the world. However, John the Baptist is said to have appeared to her and advised her to do as her parents had arranged and marry the man to whom they had betrothed her. Simeon Stylites was the child of this marriage.
She is said to have risen at midnight for prayer every night. She regularly helped those in need, visited the poor and orphans, and attended to the sick.
In the year before her death, she is said to have seen a number of angels with candles in their hands and to have learned the time of her upcoming death from them. The vision prompted her to even greater dedication to prayer and good works.
She died in 551 AD, and was buried near her son.
There have been many reports of her appearing to various people since her death, generally to heal the sick and offer instruction to people. The most noted of these was to an abbot of the monastery founded by her son. The abbot placed a votive candle on her grave with the instruction that the light never be allowed to be extinguished. Martha appeared to him saying that when the abbot burned a light on her grave, he was asking her to pray to the Lord for him.
Martha are a four-piece DIY indie/punk band from Pity Me, a village in County Durham in the North East of England. After singles on their own Discount Horse label and Odd Box Records, their debut album was released on Fortuna Pop! and Salinas Records in 2014.
They describe themselves as vegan, straight edge, and anarchist. Two members of Martha also play in the band ONSIND, and another leads the band No Ditching.
Verse 1.
Standing so near, the distance to hear, one look is enough, my body is stuck.
Holding the door, scattered clothes on the floor, your buried in deep.
It's getting closer to 8, time to hold on and wait, the line draws me in, it's getting harder to stay.
The touch of your neck, warming my breath, an excuse to be late, yeah
Chorus.
Cause' in my dreams, I couldn't explain, how my life's almost the same.
A morning surprise as the light shines in your eyes.
How could I deserve, all this?
Surreal life, but is this, real life?
Verse 2
Mosses grow slow, but still need a base, still need a place, that is home.
Sense by your fire, the sense of desire, of holding you close.
Now were writing a book, afraid that no-one can look.
One of the times that Devon makes me smile.
Reality bites, an 'angel delight', it's all a matter of style, yeah.
Chorus
Cause' in my dreams, I couldn't explain, how my life's almost the same.
A morning surprise as the light shines in your eyes.
How could I deserve, all this?
Surreal life, but is this, real life?
Real life.
Verse 3.
Yearning for space, the grin on your face, a difficult line, hard to define.
Losing my grip, so what if I slip, your moving down too.
It's getting too cold to stand, so take a hold of my hand.
It's just incredible here, I know your near.
Touch of your skin, let the shouting begin,
The wall is falling as planned.
Chorus.
Cause' in my dreams, I couldn't explain, how my life's almost the same.
A morning surprise as the light shines in your eyes.
How could I deserve, all this?
Surreal life, but is this, real life?
Cause' in my dreams, I couldn't explain, how my life's almost the same.
A morning surprise as the light shines in your eyes.
How could I deserve, all this?
Surreal life, but is this, real life?
Surreal life, but is this, real life.
