On the Road is a novel by American writer Jack Kerouac, based on the travels of Kerouac and his friends across America. It is considered a defining work of the postwar Beat and Counterculture generations, with its protagonists living life against a backdrop of jazz, poetry, and drug use. The novel, published in 1957, is a roman à clef, with many key figures in the Beat movement, such as William S. Burroughs (Old Bull Lee), Allen Ginsberg (Carlo Marx) and Neal Cassady (Dean Moriarty) represented by characters in the book, including Kerouac himself as the narrator Sal Paradise.

The idea for On the Road, Kerouac's second novel, was formed during the late 1940s in a series of notebooks, and then typed out on a continuous reel of paper during three weeks in April 1951. It was first published by Viking Press in 1957. After several film proposals dating from 1957, the book was finally made into a film, On the Road (2012), produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by Walter Salles.

On the Road is the third studio album by American country music singer Lee Roy Parnell. It was released October 26, 1993 via Arista Nashville. The album produced four singles for Parnell, all of which charted on Billboard Hot Country Songs: the title track at #6, "I'm Holding My Own" at #3, a cover of the Hank Williams song "Take These Chains from My Heart" at #17, and "The Power of Love" at #51.

"On the Road" is a song written by Bob McDill, and recorded by American country music artist Lee Roy Parnell. It was released in August 1993 as the lead-off single and title track from his album of the same name. It peaked at number 6 in the United States, and number 12 in Canada.

Content

The song consists of three vignettes featuring various characters (a neglected young wife, an underachieving teenager whose father has voiced his disappointment in him, and a retired couple whose children have forgotten them and never visit), who all flee their troubled or unfulfilling lives (in a Ford Fairlane, and "hot rod Chevy" and an Airstream trailer, respectively) and find adventure on the road.

Naval career

Educated at the University of Manchester, Anderson joined the Royal Navy in 1974 and was appointed commanding officer of the submarine HMS Talent in 1993. He became Military Assistant to the Chief of Defence Logistics in May 2000, Commanding Officer of the frigate HMS Marlborough as well as Captain of the 4th Frigate Squadron in August 2002 and Director Equipment Capability (Underwater Effects) in March 2003 before moving on to become the Chief of the Defence Staff's Liaison Officer to the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee in July 2007 and Commander Operations and Rear Admiral, Submarines in January 2009. He retired from the Royal Navy in March 2011.

In retirement he became Strategy Director of Sonar & Undersea Systems and then Group Marketing Director at Ultra Electronics.

Mark Anderson (born February 14, 1986) is an American professional golfer who has played on the Web.com Tour and the PGA Tour.

Anderson joined the Web.com Tour in 2010. In his rookie year on Tour he recorded three top-10 finishes. In 2011, he recorded four top-10 finishes and a runner-up finish at the Miccosukee Championship en route to finishing 22nd on the money list, good enough for a PGA Tour card for 2012.

On the PGA Tour in 2012, Anderson failed to make the top 200 in the FedEx Cup standings. He made 13 out of 25 cuts, but only recorded one top-10 finish all season, a T9 at the season finale. He finished 155th on the money list, losing his PGA Tour card.

Anderson returned to the Web.com Tour for the 2013 season. In May 2013, Anderson won his first professional tournament at the BMW Charity Pro-Am. He won by five strokes and set a new scoring record for the event in the process, finishing at 27-under-par for the week. It was his 60th start on the Web.com Tour. He finished eighth on the 2013 Web.com Tour regular season money list to earn his 2014 PGA Tour card.

History

Establishment

The company was founded by a partnership between Michael Marks, a Polish Jew from Słonim (Marks was born into a Polish-Jewish family, a Polish refugee living in the Russian Empire, now in Belarus), and Thomas Spencer, a cashier from the English market town of Skipton in North Yorkshire. On his arrival in England, Marks worked for a company in Leeds, called Barran, which employed refugees (see Sir John Barran, 1st Baronet). In 1884 he met Isaac Jowitt Dewhirst while looking for work. Dewhirst lent Marks £5 which he used to establish his Penny Bazaar on Kirkgate Market, in Leeds. Dewhirst also taught him a little English. Dewhirst's cashier was Tom Spencer, an excellent bookkeeper, whose lively and intelligent second wife, Agnes, helped improve Marks' English. In 1894, when Marks acquired a permanent stall in Leeds' covered market, he invited Spencer to become his partner.
