Johnson City is a city in Blanco County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,656 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Blanco County.

History

Johnson City was the hometown of President Lyndon Johnson and was founded by James Polk Johnson, nephew of Samuel Ealy Johnson, Sr. and uncle to President Johnson. James Polk Johnson donated a 320-acre (130 ha) site on the Pedernales River for the founding of the town in 1879. The county seat of Blanco County was moved to Johnson City in 1890.

Geography

Johnson City is located in central Blanco County at 30°16′35″N 98°24′29″W / 30.276427°N 98.408105°W / 30.276427; -98.408105, about 1 mile (2 km) south of the Pedernales River. U.S. Routes 281 and 290 join near the center of town; US 281 leads north 23 miles (37 km) to Marble Falls, and US 290 leads west 30 miles (48 km) to Fredericksburg. The two highways run south out of town together; US 290 soon turns east and leads 47 miles (76 km) to Austin, while US 281 continues south 64 miles (103 km) to San Antonio.

History

Known as the "Home of the Square Deal", from the Square Deal given to all employees of Endicott Johnson Corporation, Johnson City was originally incorporated in 1892 as the village of Lestershire, In 1916, the village was renamed Johnson City in honor of George F. Johnson, who led the company that was by then known as Endicott Johnson.

2009 dissolution vote

In January 2007, a group of residents organized a petition supporting dissolution of the village for tax reasons. A vote was held on November 3, 2009. On November 12, 2009, the results came back "no" for dissolution by just 42 votes.

Johnson City is a city in Washington, Carter, and Sullivan counties in the U.S. state of Tennessee, with most of the city being in Washington County. As of the 2010 census, the population of Johnson City was 63,152, and by 2014 the estimated population was 65,813, making it the ninth-largest city in the state.

Johnson City is the principal city of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which covers Carter, Unicoi, and Washington counties and had a combined population of 200,966 as of 2013. The MSA is also a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area – commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region. This CSA is the fifth largest in Tennessee with an estimated 500,538 people in residence.
