A middle school (also known as intermediate school or junior high school) is a school for students older than elementary school, but not yet in high school. The ages covered varies between, and sometimes within, countries.

Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, middle school consists of grades 6, 7 and 8.

Algeria

In Algeria, a middle school includes grades 6 through 10, consisting of students from ages 10 or 11 to 15.

Australia

Most regions of Australia do not have middle schools, as students go directly from primary school (for years K–6) to secondary school (years 7–12, usually referred to as high school).

As an alternate to the middle school model, some secondary schools divided their grades into "junior high school" (years 7 to 8) and "senior high school" (years 9, 10, 11, and 12.)

Elias Bernstein Intermediate School 7, also known as I.S.7 and nicknamed "Bernstein", is a middle school located in the Huguenot section of Staten Island, New York. The school serves grades 6-8. It has been operating since 1965. Its current rating for the 2012-2013 school year is "A."

I.S.7 has four floors: A basement below the school, hosting the cafeteria, special education departments, and housing for special students from external schools; the first floor, which houses the main and programming offices, gymnasium, auditorium, and majority of 8th grade classrooms; the second floor, which is home to the electives/art & technology classes (Chorus, Band, Drama, Dance, Art, etc.) as well as the 7th grade; the third floor, containing the foreign language department as well as the 6th grade classrooms.

Administration

Dr. Nora De Rosa, the current principal, began at I.S.7 during the 2003-04 school year with major changes. These include the addition of art & tech classes, the closer scrutiny of incoming fifth graders, redesigned English and Math lesson plans.

Intermediate School 318 (IS 318; also known as the Eugenio Maria de Hostos School) is a public inner-city junior high school at 101 Walton Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Brooklyn, New York City. Most of the school's 1,623 students, who are sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders, are from Williamsburg. The school has 134 teachers.

Over 70% of the students come from families whose income is below the poverty line. Over 90% of the students are of Latino, Black, or Asian/Pacific descent.

The school's chess program has been called the best middle-school program in the United States, and in 2012 the school's team became the first middle school team to win the United States Chess Federation national high school championship. The school's team was followed and featured in a 2012 documentary film entitled Brooklyn Castle.

Student demographics

The student poverty rate is over 70%. The school is in the Federal Title I Program, which gives money to schools who have many students from low-income families.
