In jazz improvisation, outside playing, describes an approach where one plays over a scale, mode or chord that is harmonically distant from the given chord. There are several common techniques to playing outside, that include side-stepping or side-slipping, superimposition of Coltrane changes, and polytonality.

Side-slipping

The term side-slipping or side-stepping has been used to describe several similar yet distinct methods of playing outside. In one version, one plays only the five "'wrong'" non-scale notes for the given chord and none of the seven scale or three to four chord tones, given that there are twelve notes in the equal tempered scale and heptatonic scales are generally used. Another technique described as sideslipping is the addition of distant ii-V relationships, such as a half-step above the original ii-V. This increases chromatic tension as it first moves away and then towards the tonic. Lastly, side-slipping can be described as playing in a scale a half-step above or below a given chord, before resolving, creating tension and release.

Inside is a studio album by David Sanborn, released through Elektra Records in 1999. In 2000, the album won Sanborn the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance.

Triumph was a sternwheel steamboat that ran on the Nooksack River in Whatcom County, Washington in the 1890s.

Career

Triumph is reported to have been built by Capt. Simon P. Randolph (d.1909 at Seattle), either 1889 at Lynden, WA or in 1892 at Whatcom. Randolph, who received his master's license in 1871, had been the first man to operate a steamboat on Lake Washington, had commanded or owned a number of smaller sternwheelers over his career including Fannie, Old Settler, Comet, and the Edith R. His son, Capt. Preston Brooks Randolph (1860-1939), was also involved in ownership and management of the later boats, including Triumph.

Triumph was served on the Nooksack River, which the Randolphs had developed as a steamboat route. In 1897, Triumph was destroyed by fire near the town of Marietta, WA, in Whatcom County.

Triumph is the sixteenth studio album by The Jacksons, released in 1980 on Epic Records.

It was certified platinum in the U.S. and peaked at #10 on the Billboard 200. The Triumph album sold three million copies in its original run. Hit singles from the album were "Lovely One", "Heartbreak Hotel" (which was renamed "This Place Hotel" to avoid confusion with the Elvis Presley song of the same name) and "Can You Feel It".

The Jacksons shared lead vocals and solo spots on some songs, but Michael Jackson, who recently released his multi-platinum selling album, Off the Wall, handles most of the lead vocals. Triumph was the Jacksons' first album to reach number-one on the Billboard R&B Albums chart since Maybe Tomorrow in 1971. The album sold over two million copies worldwide, and the Jacksons did not release another studio LP for four years after Triumph's release. On December 10, 1980, the album was certified Platinum for the sales of over 1 million copies in the United States.

Plot summary

As the senate gathers to sanction Caesar as dictator, Cicero and Brutus put honor aside and stand in support the man they once fought, urging their fellow senators to follow them. "He has shown himself to be as wise and merciful in victory as he was invincible in battle," says Brutus. "Let this be an end to division and civil strife." After a unanimous vote in his favor, Caesar declares the war over and announces five days of feasts and games honoring his 'triumph.'
