"God Only Knows" is a song written by Brian Wilson and Tony Asher for American rock band The Beach Boys, released in May 1966 as the eighth track on the group's album Pet Sounds. Two months later, it was released as the B-side of "Wouldn't It Be Nice" in the United States. In other countries, "God Only Knows" was the single's A-side. According to historian John Robert Greene, "God Only Knows" led to the reinvention of the popular love song.

The song names God in its title and lyrics, unusual for a pop single of its time, as Asher recalled: "Unless you were Kate Smith and you were singing 'God Bless America', no one [in 1966] thought you could say 'God' in a song." The sentiments expressed in its lyric were not specific to any God, and could be addressed to any higher force, being a song about moving forward after loss. Wilson later explained that his and Asher's intention was to create the feeling of "being blind but in being blind, you can see more".

Sung by his younger brother Carl Wilson, the Beach Boys' recording was produced and arranged by Brian using an unorthodox selection of instruments, including French horn, accordions, sleigh bell, harpsichord, and a quartet of violas and cellos heard throughout the piece in counterpoint. The musical structure has been variously cited for its harmonic complexity, inspiring tension through its disuse of authentic cadences and a definite key signature. Its closing section features perpetual rounds, a device that was not normally heard in popular music of the era.

Malcolm and Tony play a game called 'God Only Knows' and get too obsessed with it, Malcolm hides the game in the fridge, but Tony finds it. During the video, Tony is getting bored on his date and skips out to play the game and Malcolm fools his boss with a cardboard box dummy of himself to play the game. Later at the recording studio, Malcolm leaves early to run back to their apartment for the game, but Tony takes a taxi back. As they wrestle for the game, it falls out of a window to the car park and Tony and Malcolm race down to the car park, but before they could pick it up, a car runs it over. Since the game was now ruined, they decide not to play anymore games, but a mailman comes up to them with a package, presumably the sequel or a replacement and struggle for it. Tony wins the struggle and heads in their apartment as Malcolm thanks the mailman before heading in himself.

By the Gun (formerly God Only Knows) is an American crime drama film directed by James Mottern and written by Emilio Mauro. The film stars Ben Barnes, Leighton Meester, Harvey Keitel, Kenny Wormald, Toby Jones, Paul Ben-Victor and Ritchie Coster. Barnes plays a low-level gangster who longs to become a made man, only to find that his life has become much more complicated once this happens.

Plot

Nick Tortano is an associate of local caporegime Sal Vitaglia. Nick wants to become a made man but has yet to be trusted enough for his first contract killing. As the Boston crime families wither, however, Sal is forced to consolidate his power and advance more men. Recognizing Nick as potentially useful soldier, Sal advises him to show more loyalty and respect to the family. Sal forces him to deliver an apology in order to smooth over relations with another gangster, Tony Matazano, whom he has insulted. Nick reluctantly delivers the apology, though his friend George, a local thug unaffiliated with the mafia, ridicules him for having to show respect to what he views as a contemptible person. Although Tony accepts Nick's apology, tensions remain high between them.

David Stewart is an award-winning freelance bass trombonist, and music teacher based in London.

Biography

David Stewart was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and studied with Peter Gane at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. He was also a member of the National Youth Orchestra.

He was the winner of the 1983 Shell/LSO brass competition and has been a member of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and London Philharmonic Orchestra (1998–2005). He also performs with London Brass.

Often seen in the commercial and recording world, Stewart has worked with Quincy Jones, Kenny Wheeler, Mike Gibbs, John Surman and Natalie Cole. His film credits include Lord of the Rings (complete), the last five James Bond films, The Golden Compass, and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

Stewart has played in The Sound of Music in London's West End since it opened in November 2006.

He has also played for many others including Robbie Williams, Elton John, Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell, S Club 7 and S Club Juniors.
