Sheldon Allan "Shel" Silverstein (September 25, 1930 – May 10, 1999) was an American poet, singer-songwriter, cartoonist, screenwriter, and author of children's books. He styled himself as Uncle Shelby in some works. Translated into more than 30 languages, his books have sold over 20 million copies.
Personal life
Born into a Jewish family, Silverstein grew up in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago, attended Roosevelt High School and, later, the University of Illinois, from which he was expelled. He then enrolled in Chicago Academy of Fine Arts where he was attending when he was drafted into the United States Army. He served in Japan and Korea. He had one daughter, Shoshanna Jordan Hastings, born June 30, 1970, with Susan Taylor Hastings of Sausalito, California. Susan died on June 29, 1975, one day before Shoshanna's fifth birthday, and Shoshanna died April 24, 1982, at age 11, of a cerebral aneurysm. He also had a son named Matthew, born November 10, 1984, with Sarah Spencer of Key West, Florida; Sarah drove the conch train and inspired Shel's song "The Great Conch Train Robbery." On May 10, 1999, Silverstein died at age 68 of a massive heart attack in Key West, Florida. He is buried in Westlawn Cemetery in Norridge, Illinois.
Johnny "J.R." Cash (February 26, 1932 – September 12, 2003) was an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, actor, and author, who was widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century and one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 90 million records worldwide. Although primarily remembered as a country music icon, his genre-spanning songs and sound embraced rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel. This crossover appeal won Cash the rare honor of multiple inductions in the Country Music, Rock and Roll and Gospel Music Halls of Fame.
Cash was known for his deep, calm bass-baritone voice, the distinctive sound of his Tennessee Three backing band, a rebelliousness coupled with an increasingly somber and humble demeanor, free prison concerts, and a trademark look, which earned him the nickname "The Man in Black". He traditionally began his concerts with the simple "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash", followed by his signature "Folsom Prison Blues".
"Johnny Cash" is a song co-written by John Rich, Vicky McGehee and Rodney Clawson. It was originally recorded by Tracy Byrd on his 2005 Greatest Hits album, but not released as a single.
In 2007, the song was covered by Jason Aldean and released as the lead-off single to his 2007 album Relentless. Released in early 2007 as Aldean's fourth single, it also became his fourth consecutive top ten hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, where it peaked at number 6. The song was also featured in the soundtrack to the video game NASCAR 08.

"Johnny Cash" is an up-tempo song in which the narrator addresses his lover, inviting her to join him on a road trip to Las Vegas. The connection to singer Johnny Cash is made only in the chorus ("Blastin' out the Johnny Cash"), indicating that Cash's music will be played while the narrator and his lover are on their road trip.
Critical reception
Brody Vercher, reviewing the album for Engine 145, said that the song is "a good pick-me up song for those looking to get the blood flowing before a workout." Kevin John Coyne, reviewing the song for Country Universe, gave it a C- rating. He said that "the song doesn’t even have a melody, with Aldean yelling through most of the record as if he’s straining to be heard over the loud production."

"A Boy Named Sue" is a song written by Shel Silverstein that was made popular by Johnny Cash. Cash was at the height of his success when he recorded the song live at California's San Quentin State Prison at a concert on February 24, 1969. The concert was filmed by Granada Television for later television broadcast; Carl Perkins played guitar on the performance. The audio of the concert was later released on Cash's At San Quentin album. Cash also performed the song (with comical variations on the original performance) in December 1969 at Madison Square Garden. The song became Cash's biggest hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and his only top ten single there, spending three weeks at No. 2 in 1969, held out of the top spot by "Honky Tonk Women" by The Rolling Stones. A Boy Named Sue is a 2001 documentary film directed by Julie Wyman. It shows the life and transition of Theo, a young adult, raised female, involved in a lesbian relationship, who undergoes various stages of a sex reassignment surgery (including a mastectomy and hormone therapy) to become male. The protagonist is filmed extensively throughout, gives a number of interviews, and eventually settles down as a gay male. The film's title is taken from the song A Boy Named Sue.
Distribution and reception
The film played at several festivals including the 2000 San Francisco International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and Reel Affirmations. It was nominated for a 2004 GLAAD Media Award.
