A county highway (also county road or county route; usually abbreviated CH or CR) is a road in the United States and in the Canadian province of Ontario that is designated and/or maintained by the county highway department. Route numbering can be determined by each county alone, by mutual agreement among counties, or by a statewide pattern.

Any county-maintained road, whether or not it is given a signed number, can be called a county road. Depending on the state or province and county, these roads can be named after local geographic features, communities, or people and/or be assigned a name determined by a standardized grid reference; for example: "East 2000 Road" would be a north–south road running 20 blocks/miles/km east of the designated zero point. Many other systems are also used; some counties rather arbitrarily assign numbers to all maintained roads, but do not sign them at all or only sign them on standard street sign blades.

County roads and highways vary greatly in design standards, funding and regularity of maintenance. Some county highways in urban areas are freeways or expressways. County roads that link communities or serve residential areas are often indistinguishable from state highways or residential streets. In rural areas, many county roads carry very little traffic; these roads are maintained less frequently. They may be in poor condition (if they are paved) or not paved at all. In remote areas, county roads are made of sand, gravel, or graded earth, seeing only occasional foot, equestrian, and four wheel drive traffic. Some states, such as Wisconsin, use county highways in great numbers, linking major highways and cities or towns to each other.

County Road 456 (Fv456) is a county road in Vest-Agder, Norway. The road takes over for European route E39 in Hannevika, Kristiansand, in to the borough Vågsbygd. Therefore this part is called the Vågsbygdporten and goes threw a tunnel under Slettheia. The road continues south through Vågsbygd and goes west when it comes to Voiebyen. It then goes past Bråvann and into Søgne municipality. In Søgne, the road goes through Langenes and is therefore called Langenesveien or Langenessletta. County Road 456 goes past places like the church in Søgne and the only high school in Søgne. The road ends in Søgne centrum, Tangvall. It leads through the centre and stops with E39 again.

The 31.5 miles (50.7 km) long State Road 76 (SR 76), also known and signed as Kanner Highway, is a northeast-southwest (signed east–west) state highway connecting Port Mayaca on the shore of Lake Okeechobee at the intersection with US 98-441 (SR 700-SR 15) with Stuart on the shore of the St. Lucie River near the Atlantic Ocean and the Treasure Coast at an intersection with US 1 (SR 5). It parallels the nearby St. Lucie Canal, a navigable waterway connecting the lake and the ocean.

Route description

West of Florida's Turnpike (SR 91) and Interstate 95 (SR 9), SR 76 crosses the woodland and wetlands typifying Florida northeast of Lake Okeechobee. With the exception of Indiantown on the opposite (northern) side of St. Lucie Canal near the intersection of SR 76 and SR 710, very little human habitation exists along the southwestern 25 miles (40 km) of SR 76.

Northeast of the two expressways, the human presence is more pronounced (a marina is located on the canal between the turnpike and I-95, for example) as the urbanization undergone by Florida’s extreme southeastern counties has penetrated Martin County.
