The people in the district are mainly indigenous citizens of Quechua descent. Quechua is the language which the majority of the population (88.63%) learnt to speak in childhood, 10.73% of the residents started speaking using the Spanish language (2007 Peru Census).[2]

History

In 1988, during Peru's internal conflict, the military killed 39 residents of the district in the Cayara massacre.[3]
