Source

The Canterbury Museum, situated in Christchurch, New Zealand, is home to a wide range of internationally recognized exhibitions. These include displays on Antarctica, contemporary costumes, New Zealand avifauna (including extinct species), insects, the history of conflicts between the Maori and Europeans in the Canterbury region, ornamental art from Asia, and Canterbury's natural history. These diverse exhibits provide a comprehensive insight into the region's rich cultural and natural history.

Historical Significance of the Canterbury Museum

The Canterbury Museum is home to nearly two million exhibits, showcasing a vast array of artifacts and specimens. The museum was first opened to the public in December 1867 by Julius von Haast in the Provincial Council Building. This historical significance adds to the museum's charm and appeal for visitors.

Architectural Evolution of the Canterbury Museum

The Canterbury Museum has undergone significant alterations over time, reflecting the evolving architectural styles and needs of the institution. A two-story wing in the Victorian Gothic style was added in 1872, followed by a substantial extension in 1876, and the courtyard was roofed in 1882. Further restorations took place in 1958, 1977, and between 1987 and 1995 to meet earthquake standards. In 1995, on the museum's 125th anniversary, a four-story tract housing a courtyard for short and traveling exhibitions was opened.
