AstroBin's community has built a database of thousands of products for astrophotography.
Imagine Wikipedia, but for astrophotography equipment… this is the AstroBin Equipment Database.
Just like AstroBin has revolutionized amateur astrophotography by providing the community with an integrated and powerful data storage solution for their images and associated metadata, the AstroBin Equipment Database aims to preserve information about equipment items long after they have been discontinued and their web pages don't exist anymore. Thanks to the collective knowledge of the astrophotography community, and the collaborative tools provided by AstroBin, this is possible.
Astrophotography is a technical hobby: people often have some trouble with a piece of equipment and want to connect to other owners to get help and guidance. The AstroBin Equipment Database makes it possible thanks to dedicated forums for each equipment item that notify the users of these items in case of new posts.
A centralized, polished and data-rich equipment database lends even more power to the AstroBin search engine. The consolidation of equipment items makes it possible to find even more images acquired with a certain piece of equipment, and the presence of technical specifications allows the AstroBin search engine to find images that match whatever technical ranges you require (e.g. min/max telescope diameter, min/max camera pixel size, etc).
AstroBin's Equipment Database is built with collaboration in mind. Like Wikipedia, anyone can propose edits to the technical details of an item, and anyone can add new items (e.g. when new equipment is introduced to the market, or when something is simply missing because nobody uses it yet on AstroBin).
With a peer review mechanism, and data fields for many technical pieces of information (plus a “community notes” section to build like a Wikipedia page), the database is going to get as complete and detailed as the community needs it to be.
