'Going Varsity in Mariachi' Review: An Engaging Netflix Doc About Texas Teens

Joe Leydon was born and raised in New Orleans, where he acquired a taste for fine food, hearty partying and chronic moviegoing at an early age. He has been a film critic and regional correspondent for Variety since 1990, and has frequently represented the publication at film festivals and other events. From 1982 until 1995, Leydon was film critic for The Houston Post. Since the paper’s demise, he has reviewed films for MSNBC.com, NBC affiliate KPRC-TV, The Houston Press and the San Francisco Examiner; written for The Los Angeles Times, Newsday, New York Daily News, The Boston Globe, The Toronto Star, Film Comment, MovieMaker magazine and The Tennessean; and authored the book Joe Leydon’s Guide to Essential Movies You Must See. A founding member of the Houston Film Critics Society, Leydon currently is senior writer for Cowboys & Indians magazine, and has taught at the Jack J.
