Este trabalho teve por objetivo a proposição de cenários para o equacionamento da disposição de r... more Este trabalho teve por objetivo a proposição de cenários para o equacionamento da disposição de resíduos sólidos gerados por áreas urbanas da região do Baixo Ribeira de Iguape, localizado no estado de São Paulo. Utilizou-se a análise multicritério, que requer a identificação de critérios que podem ser restrições e fatores. Como critérios de agregação optou-se pela Combinação Linear Ponderada e pela Média Ponderada Ordenada. Para cada um dos municípios calculou-se a área necessária para a disposição final de seus resíduos sólidos. Os resultados mostraram que a melhor área para o município de Cajati está localizada a aproximadamente 3,0km da sede do mesmo, para Jacupiranga a 2,7km e para Pariqüera-Açu a 2,4km. A metodologia mostrou-se adequada ao propósito em questão, levando-se em consideração 18 fatores e restrições influentes no processo de decisão.

The production of different species of microalgae in consortium with other micro-organisms from w... more The production of different species of microalgae in consortium with other micro-organisms from wastewaters may represent an alternative process, to reduce the costs, for obtaining biofuels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of pre-ultraviolet disinfection (UV) in the production of lipids from biomass produced in high rate ponds. Two high rate algal ponds were evaluated: a pond that received domestic sewage without disinfection and the other receiving domestic sewage previously disinfected by UV radiation (uvHRAP). The UV disinfection did not lead to significant differences in fatty acid profile and total lipid productivities, although it increased algal biomass concentration and productivity as well as lipid content. Moreover, the overall biomass concentrations and productivities decreased with the UV disinfection, mostly as a consequence of a loss in bacterial load. Process-based ecological models have been used to study freshwater ecosystems and water quality o... more Process-based ecological models have been used to study freshwater ecosystems and water quality on a broad scale. However, it is also of pivotal importance to incorporate watershed dynamics and nutrient releases in the downstream freshwaters. Integrated modeling approaches have been used to understand the combined effect of climate warming and land use and land cover (LULC) changes in lake ecosystems. Moreover, most basin-scale water quality models require many datasets and parameters to perform reliable simulations which contributes to reduce studies in poorly monitored basins, most of them located in the Global South. In this study, we developed a coupled hydrological-biogeochemical-ecological modeling framework forced by two regionalized climate models and three LULC change scenarios to forecast trophic state changes in a subtropical multipurpose reservoir for the decade 2050-2060. The projections indicated an average air temperature increase between 2°C and 3°C and a downward trend of the average rainfall and longwave radiation for the 2050s in comparison to the last decade. We found a pattern of 28% increase in total phosphorus (TP) and total chlorophyll-a (TChla) concentrations in the reservoir compared with the historical baseline. The climate warming projections along the 2059 projected LULC and basin's increased economic development scenarios have predicted trophic state index (TSI) shifts between mesotrophic and eutrophic conditions (53.3<TSI<57.7). On the other hand, one of the climate projections along the reduced deforestation scenario indicated a trend towards oligotrophication between 2054 and 2056, however higher phosphorus availability (60µg.<TP<100µg.) and phytoplankton biomass (50µg.<TChla<97µg.) would be expected for the entire decade compared to recent years. The proposed coupled modeling framework demonstrated the potential of open-source tools in water quality management studies, especially for poorly monitored basins, based on climate change trends and human pressure.

METHODS: Four samplings were performed: two in the wet and two in the dry season in the riverine, transitional and lacustrine zones in the littoral and profundal regions of Itupararanga reservoir, SP, Brazil. Abiotic characterization of the water and of the sediment was performed. The biotic characterization was based on richness, dominance, diversity, and density of organisms, as well as on the relative abundance of predominant taxa. The warning for the presence of potential toxin-producing cyanobacteria is typically based on time-consuming microscopy, rather than specific molecular detection of toxic genes in cyanobacteria. In this study, we developed a quantitative PCR assay for the detection of cyanobacteria producing the neurotoxin saxitoxin (STX). The assay targets the sxtA gene in the sxt gene cluster. Potential and dominant STX-producers in the Itupararanga reservoir were the genera Raphidiopsis, Aphanizomenon and Geitlerinema. Numbers of the sxtA gene varied from 6.76 × 103 to 7.33 × 105 cells mL−1 and correlated positively with SXT concentrations in the water. Concentrations of STX and the sxtA gene also correlated positively with TN:TP ratio and pH, but correlated negatively with inorganic nutrients and turbidity, confirming that regulation of the SXT production was impacted by environmental variables. Abstract The scarcity of long time-series of water temperature for tropical reservoirs, usually a... more Abstract The scarcity of long time-series of water temperature for tropical reservoirs, usually available at a low frequency of measurements, represents a serious constraint for the understanding of their thermal behavior. Hydrodynamic models become a powerful tool for that understanding through a qualitative approach. In this study, the one-dimensional General Lake Model (GLM) was applied to hindcast multiannual temperature profiles of a cascade system of six reservoirs located in southeast Brazil over a period of eight years. The model parameters were calibrated and validated by field data for four reservoirs. To overcome the challenge of exploring hydrodynamics in two reservoirs with a lack of measured temperatures, a parameterization strategy was applied to accomplish a better simulation by the estimation of potential sensitive parameters through regression curves. It is expected that this approach can be extended to other tropical reservoirs whenever field data is not available for the calibration procedure.
