Adult children of emotionally immature parents are often expected to just "accept" their parents as they are and stay in relationship with their parent despite the lack of acknowledgment of the harm that's been done and without any effort made by the parent to change. This can be incredibly difficult to deal with, especially when others outside the family don't understand. Know that choosing to go low/no-contact is not a sign that you've failed. There are four different types of emotionally immature parents, but at the root of each type is poor emotional development, a lack of relational skills, self-centeredness, and a struggle to develop deep emotional intimacy with their children. If you have an emotionally immature parent, it is wise to exercise discernment regarding the things you share with them. Have boundaries, and remember that some things are not your parents’ business.
