America’s First Son and a British prince are on the precipice of making history with their secret romance in the first trailer for Prime Video‘s Red, White & Royal Blue.
Based on Casey McQuiston’s bestselling novel, the highly anticipated movie adaptation takes place in a hypothetical world where the first female president (played by Uma Thurman) is inaugurated in 2016, and her son, Alex Claremont-Diaz (The Kissing Booth 2′s Taylor Zakhar Perez), begins a forbidden enemies-to-lovers relationship with Prince Henry of Wales (Purple Hearts’ Nicholas Galitzine).
Alex and Henry “have a lot in common: stunning good looks, undeniable charisma, international popularity…and a total disdain for each other,” per the official film synopsis. “Separated by an ocean, their long-running feud hasn’t really been an issue, until a disastrous—and very public—altercation at a royal event becomes tabloid fodder driving a potential wedge in U.S./British relations at the worst possible time.”
“Going into damage control mode, their powerful families and respective handlers force the two rivals into a staged ‘truce.’ But as Alex and Henry’s icy relationship unexpectedly begins to thaw into a tentative friendship, the friction that existed between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected.”
That connection is on display in the above trailer, in which Alex and Henry share secret kisses and steamy nights together as they try to avoid the press and Henry’s responsibilities to the crown. All the sneaking around earns Henry this warning from the POTUS’ Chief of Staff (played by Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi): “If anyone sees you leaving this hotel, I will Brexit your head from your body.”
But all the conflicts and challenges in the world can’t keep Alex and Henry from falling in love. “It’s like there’s a rope attached to my chest, and it keeps pulling me toward you,” Alex declares.
The cast also includes Rachel Hilson (Love, Victor), Thomas Flynn (Bridgerton) and Stephen Fry (Bones).
Premiering on the streamer on Friday, Aug. 11, Red, White & Royal Blue was written by Tony Award-winning playwright Matthew López (The Inheritance), who also directed the film, and Ted Malawer. Berlanti Productions is behind the movie.

I am looking forward to this but Uma accent sounds like she’s talking with her mouth having been sewed shut.
Can’t wait for this! Now I’m just debating whether to re-read the book before seeing the movie – I last read it over 2 years ago – or go into the movie without the details “fresh” in mind… Hmmm … decisions, decisions!
I’ve decided to re-read the book after seeing the movie so I can hopefully cut down on my internal “that’s not how it happened” grumbling.
That’s where I was leaning as well – read it again after viewing. As you say, there are going to be things in the movie that are altered from the book due to time and format constraints.
I’m waiting to re-read as well, there are already obvious differences visible in the trailer, the biggest one seems to be that June doesn’t exist, which is kind of huge. I’m still really excited for this though and the banter and tone seem to have translated well.
If we go only by the trailer, well then the First Husband doesn’t exit, nor the Queen nor Henry’s brother nor …
.
I’ll be honest: I was thrilled just seeing scenes straight from the book so I’m going to hold out hope that this is a faithful adaptation, and I plan to enjoy it regardless!!
Very true, I’ll hold out hope she’s still there. The cast list doesn’t look promising for her inclusion though. I’m sure I’ll still enjoy it as seeing some of the scenes from the book in the trailer was amazing. I’ve seen so many books I’ve loved become movie/TV adaptations and always try to give them a fair go and not criticise the differences too much.
So it’s like a gay Hallmark movie… I like it!
It’s rated R!
It definitely merits the R,
If Amazon ever release the movie on Dvd and Blu-ray like they did with Cinderella, which month would be the best time? June for pride month or February for Valentine’s day in 2024?!
This looks super cute. Plus, Uma Thurman? Sign me up!
I’m confused by Uma’s accent, but I’m HERE for this movie!!
Agree Uma’s accent is confusing. She has to be American born to be president so she picked up a weird accent where she was raised outside of the US, her nanny, or…?
Sarah Shahi is great in anything she does. This looks interesting.
President Claremont-Diaz grew up in Texas so what you’re hearing is Uma’s take on a Texas accent. If she just said * darlin’ * even once you could be forgiven for thinking it was JR Ewing ;-)
The movie’s trailer and all the advance photos promise this will be adorable and super entertaining. Impatiently waiting to watch!!
its 2023 can we really not cast LGBTQ actors in LGBTQ roles ? like come on im so sick of seeing straight boys get these rolls and the actors who come out get nothing, never mind the fact the complete lack of intmacy when the straights get these rolls , thought we had progressed with heartstopper and young royles, people not scared to touch .. which unlike in real life it seems like these 2 actually managed to find some , … side note WTF is umas accent ?
…As long as LGB actors can not play straight roles. Fair is fair, right?
I’m gonna ask the obvious, are the 2 lead actors part of the community? Because I think that representation matters especially for a gay love story. I’m sure many gay actors don’t get many opportunities and it’s not about just giving a role to somebody just because of their sexual orientation but you’re telling me that there wasn’t anybody else?? I don’t have anything against Nicholas or Taylor but if people are going to speak out about inclusiveness then let’s talk about it.
…WHY isn’t it representative and inclusive ENOUGH to simply have the MAIN characters be LGB figures??? WHY be SO ungratefully nit-picky? (Also, would you have seen it like you did NOT with last fall’s ‘Bros’-DESPITE its acclaim and inclusion?)
Seen the trailer many times, love it. Plan to read the book soon. How much money did it take to make the movie?
