A solid grilled cheese sandwich is one of our family’s favorite lunches.

They’re super easy, and then there’s the obvious delicious benefit of copious amounts of melted cheese sandwiched between layers of buttery toasted bread.

Sometimes the childhood classics really are the best.

And anytime I get a craving for a good dose of comfort food, a good grilled cheese always comes to mind.

However, there’s other things I get cravings for too- like crispy crab rangoon. Sadly, the Chinese appetizer isn’t near as easy or quick to whip up.

That’s when I had a clever thought- why not just combine the two?

The cream cheese and crab filling already tastes delicious warm, and then it’s really just swapping out the fried wonton wrapper for a buttery crispy toasted bread crust.

Crab rangoon grilled cheese makes the ultimate adult grilled cheese sandwich, and it’s epic comfort food.

Ingredients Needed

While this gourmet grilled cheese needs some extra ingredients, the list is still straightforward and relatively simple.

You’ll need:

  • Bread – You can use either white or wheat sandwich bread.
  • Butter – Two tablespoons of salted butter (yes, you should be using salted butter for your grilled cheeses!) will melt and help toast up your bread in the skillet, and also infuses the bread with rich flavor.
  • Cream Cheese – You’ll need an 8 ounce block of cream cheese that’s been brought to room temperature to soften. Full fat works best, but you could also use Neufchatel if you wanted to shave off a few calories.
  • Crab – I use imitation crab meat in this recipe since it gives flavor but is also a lot cheaper than real crab meat; however, if you have, or much prefer, real crab you could use either jumbo or lump in this.
  • Seasonings – This crab rangoon filling gets seasoned with a blend of garlic powder, salt, white pepper, and a pinch of granulated sugar.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – Another savory addition to the filling that will add another note of flavor.
  • Green Onions – A couple green onions, thinly sliced. Adds delicious flavor to the cream cheese mixture.

That’s it!

Gather your ingredients and you’re ready to whip up an epic crab rangoon grilled cheese sandwich.

How To Make

While this specialty grilled cheese certainly sounds (and tastes) pretty fancy, I promise it’s still quick and easy to whip up.

To start, you’re going to want to prepare the filling.

In a mixing bowl add the cream cheese, crab, seasonings, Worcestershire sauce, and green onions.

Using a hand mixer, whip the ingredients together until smooth & creamy and evenly incorporated.

The crab meat will naturally break/flake apart as the filling’s mixed together.

This is also why I suggest using a hand mixer, as opposed to doing it by hand with a sturdy spoon. A hand mixer makes things quicker, easier, and just all around is more convenient.

Set the filling mixture aside.

Use a medium or large skillet, or griddle pan, and set it over medium-medium low heat. This will depend on how hot your stove gets and how fast it cooks.

Add the butter to the pan.

While the butter melts, add roughly 1/3 of a cup of filling to a slice of bread. Spread it out to cover the slice to the edges in a mostly even layer.

Top with another slice of bread to close the sandwich.

Add the sandwich to the melted butter in the center of the hot skillet.

Cook, watching carefully to prevent burning, until the bottom’s golden brown and crispy- about 2-3 minutes.

Using two spatulas, carefully flip the sandwich to the other side.

Continue cooking the sandwich until the other side of bread’s also golden brown & crispy, and the filling’s warm and melty.

Transfer the sandwich to a waiting plate, and continue for the other two sandwiches.

You can tent the plate of cooked crab rangoon grilled cheeses with foil to help keep them warm, especially if making more than just a few.

When ready to serve you can keep the sandwiches whole, slice them in half diagonally to form two triangles, or cut into four quarters.

Storing

If you aren’t planning to make three grilled cheese. You can store the extra filling in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Alternatively if you have leftover grilled cheese, or want to make them ahead of time, allow the cooked crab rangoon grilled cheese sandwiches to cool completely.

Once cool, transfer them to an airtight container or a ziplocking storage bag. They can then be refrigerated for up to 48 hours.

When ready to enjoy them again, reheat them in a toaster over or an air fryer until once again crispy on the outside and warm and gooey on the inside.

Can I Make The Crab Rangoon Filling Spicy?

Yes!

If you want a little more zip in your creamy crab filling- add a teaspoon or two (to taste) of Sriracha hot chili sauce to your cream cheese mixture.

Simply add it to the mixing bowl with all the other ingredients, and blend together as instructed.

TIPS & TRICKS

  • Whip the filling ingredients together using a hand mixer, it easily flakes apart the crab while mixing. So much easier than faking with a fork and then stirring with a sturdy spoon!
  • Watch carefully while the sandwiches are cooking to prevent burning.
