have some decorum

Ok, so yesterday afternoon I get an email from Melanie, a friend I met through this blog.  She tells me about this blog called Have Some Decorum and that I must read it.  So I did.  I started with her about page and was sucked in immediately and then went on to read her hilarious post about tinsel. The next thing you know 4 hours have passed and I've just about read her whole blog. To say Ellie is an inspiration is like saying the Sistine Chapel is just okay.  Seriously, I cannot believe that people exist in this world that have the kind of spirit and humor that she has.  She is beautiful beyond description and when I clicked on her blog this morning (after dreaming about her all night) and saw Ellie's post today, well I just cried.  Please, please, I beg of you, and I never beg really, to click over and read and pray.  Pray hard please for this person I just met virtually yesterday.  Stephen Andrew, I think you will particularly love Ellie.  I don't know why but I just think you will.  You all will I know. If you would be so kind, please leave her a comment, sending love.  If you are not in the Christmas spirit or if you think you have it bad, maybe have an illness or job loss or divorce or death recently, please read and it will put everything in perspective.
Thank You.  x

the slow path to a beautiful home

This past weekend M and I went to 2 wonderful estate sales.  One of the best things about going to estate sales is getting to see how people really lived their lives.  It used to make me sad, watching a bunch of strangers rifling through a deceased persons belongings. Now my focus is on the beauty that was woven into each of their lives.  You see the dishes they used each day, the art they looked at and the wear marks of a favorite chair.  It really is an absolutely fascinating glimpse into a life lived.

The first sale was a home in Sierra Madre, a pretty little town near Pasadena.  The gentleman that lived here was a collector extraordinaire. The company that organized the sale said it took them nine, 15 hour days to get it only partially sorted.  Imagine that. There is still a great deal that will have to be gone through and another sale will take place in the future. One of the rooms in the house was dedicated to his work and love of the Navajo. There were gorgeous rugs, baskets and a museum worthy photography collection. But there were also collections of butterflies, arrowheads, shells and axe-heads that he cataloged with painstaking detail.  Just check this out...

Above is just a small sampling of his shell/arrowhead collection.  Each and every one of these tiny shells and arrowheads has a notation on them as to the location it was found and the date. There are thousands of them!  Each arrowhead, each butterfly...everything was recorded in this manner. It's an incredible collection and the attention to detail is staggering.

The other sale we went to was in swank San Marino, an upscale town also near Pasadena.  It appears the lady of the house was at one time an antique dealer specializing in French antiques.  She was a lover of beautiful art, books and gardens.  It was pure joy walking through her home.  I picked up an old teak garden chair, a couple of old books to give as gifts and a lampshade that I thought might fit a lamp I had gotten at an estate sale about 2 years ago.  The shade is beautifully made but I wasn't sure it would fit.  For $3 I took a risk.

Here is what the lamp looks like...

The lamp was $5 and so pretty but I failed to realize how hard it was going to be to find a shade that fit it. But low and behold, 2 years later a perfect match was found.

Everything in this cabinet, including the cabinet itself was obtained 2nd hand.  I think that's why I love shopping this way.  It's a slow, steady and mindful path to beauty.

Those tiny pine cones were picked up last year while walking through Prince Charles' garden at Highgrove. I'm sure a definite no-no but I couldn't resist.  Inspired by the gentleman in Sierra Madre, I'm going to put a little notation on these pieces so maybe one day someone will see a story instead of just an object when they pick it up.  Decorating this way takes time but it is so rewarding.  Your house won't just be a reflection of your taste but will indeed tell the story of your life.

oh hello

Just thought I'd pop in and say hello.  I've been taking the word relaxation to a whole new level. I've cut my computer time down to about 1/4 of what it used to be.  Forcing myself to not turn it on first thing in the morning is getting easier.  When I do come on-line, I try to quickly attend to emails and then go cruising through my reader list to see how everyone is doing. Glad to know you are all fine.:)

I've been having afternoon tea with my neighbor Mrs. Howell.  I've known her for many years as her daughter was our neighbor in our old home.  My sons and her grandsons all grew up together so we have lots to talk about and I love sitting and chatting with her.  We sit by her pool and gossip for about an hour before her/our afternoon nap.  Yes, I've been taking a nap.

This morning I was in the rose garden having a bit of a walkabout when I began to notice the interior structure of these roses.  Far away they look ordinary but up close it's like a symphony of petals, each one working with the next to create such beauty.

I've added 2 Yin yoga classes to my weekly schedule too.  If you've never taken a Yin class I highly recommend. The part that sold me was that the whole class is either sitting or lying down. For instance in a 1 hr class you will hold maybe 4 poses.  It sounds a heck of a lot easier than it is. It's about relaxing into the pose and letting go of expectations. The expectation of a typical yoga flow isn't there.  It's about being still and quieting the mind.  It's incredibly calming and somewhat emotional and I'm quite in love with it.

Ok, so what on earth have you guys been doing?  Fill me in.

some food for thought this thanksgiving

I have blogged through the holidays for the last five years and I just want to step away from the computer and enjoy some time with my family.  I suggest maybe you try it too.

But before I go, here are a few things of interest.

I am a Goodwill Industries shopper.  I always thought shopping the Goodwill was a responsible thing to do.  That is until I saw this report on Nightly News.

Before you buy your free range turkey, read this.

And finally if the stress is getting to you...this.

Have a simple and beautiful holiday!

*edited note.  it was brought to my attention that the uggs story was not true so i deleted it.
thanks little edie for bringing it to my attention!

the $1 hostess gift

you must know by now that i'm quite frugal.  that is a lot different from being cheap though.
in my eyes frugal is careful and cheap is stingy.

i'd like to think that the gift i'm giving this year to my neighbors is a nice gift.
it takes a little time but the end result is quite lovely.

who wouldn't love a freshly baked loaf of bread?

wrapped in a 50 cent ikea tea towel makes it the perfect holiday hostess gift.
coming in at a whopping $1 you could even add a jar of jam or a bottle of wine.

and if you don't bake you could purchase an artisan loaf of bread from your favorite bakery and wrap it in a tea towel and it is still a brilliant but affordable gift.

anyway that's what i'm doing this year.
what about you?

ps - oh my gosh, thank you all for your wonderful tips and advice and general commiserating about having the blues this time of year.  just writing about it made me feel better.
as i always say, this blog is nothing without you.
much love,

janet

if money were no object

what would you do if money were no object?
i think about this question a lot.
like what would i do if i won the lottery, which i never play btw.
i have a small list going that involves a sprinkler system
and painting my house.
i don't think i need to win the lottery to accomplish those things but i do wonder what kind of life i'd be living if money were no object.
i think this little video is perfect.

enjoy

the secret to a long and happy life

joshua tree last saturday morning

i saw this video on the beautiful blog raining sheep.
it is so soothing to watch that i just had to share it.

if you need your blood pressure to be lowered while at the same time being inspired, then i suggest you sit back and enjoy, it's only 4 minutes long.
i am utterly captivated by this woman's grace, beauty and way of life.

essentials

have you ever daydreamed and imagined what it would be like to start over?  i mean from scratch.  what would your choose today to live with?  what would your home/wardrobe look like if you could wipe the slate clean and start fresh?  what would your essential list look like? i mean the rock bottom basics that you really wouldn't want to live without.  mine looks kinda like this...

a good mattress
soft linens
a comfy sofa
a couple of good reading lamps
good cookware
books
music

for one of my dear, sweet readers this isn't a daydream, it is actually a real life nightmare. i noticed she wasn't around and commenting like she used to,  so i sent her a email asking how she was.

this is part of the chilling email i got back...

janet,
on may 29 i woke up, thought my kitchen smelled funny, lit a candle, and my home exploded from a gas leak. i have been in st john's mercy burn clinic and am presently in mercy rehab hospital in st louis. if all goes well i will be moved home in 7 days with home health care assistance.. my husband and i will live with my mother and father in law since we have no home or belongings. my husband is well and i am in rehab with 70% burns---3rd degree on parts of my body, 20% on my face. i am lucky to be alive. i said i regretted lighting that candle, but one doctor said to me, if i had not done that, my husband and i would have very well been found both dead from the gas line leak.
i'm so grateful to be alive and have the chance to be with my loved ones.

i'm happy to report that she is out of the hospital, improving everyday and living with her in-laws.
and all she is asking for is some help with putting together what she is calling an essential list.
maybe you can help?  can you think about it for a moment and share what your essential list would look like?  thanks so much.  think about wardrobe too b/c i'm gonna ask about that next week.:)

on fathers

happy fathers day larry korff.
i mention you here and there on this blog but people don't really know you.
i rarely, if ever write family/sappy-type posts, so brace yourselves.

things that have made you a good father...

1.  always being present.  from the minute we became parents, you were in it with me.
whatever it took, you were there.  neither of us knew what the heck we were doing but we formed a team and got it done.  thank you for playing on my team.

2.  thank you for teaching me how to let boys be boys.  what did i know about boys?  nothing.  being the youngest of 3 girls, boys were aliens to me.  thank you for letting them experience everything boys need to experience w/o a frantic mom trying to stop them.  i cannot thank you enough for teaching them how to camp, ride dirt bikes, how to ski, swim...fill in the blank, coaching every team they were ever on, never missing a school event.   and through it all giving me time home alone to rest and relax and be a girl.

3.  thank you for always putting us first.  whatever we needed, we got.
you always put yourself last.

4.  thank you for instilling adventure in us all.  all you ever had to do was mention the word camping, dirt bikes or skiing and in 10 minutes flat your truck was loaded with gear, the boys and even a few extra neighbor kids, all trying to keep up with you.

5.  above all thank you for being a man of integrity.  always leading by example, hard work and discipline, not preaching, well sometimes preaching.:)

i love you!

happy fathers day weekend everyone.

from the scottish highlands

remember this skirt from yesterday?

as a few of you pointed out, it is actually a kilt.

i happen to have a very dear reader named alan in scotland.
he is a stylist for a major department store.  he is very keen on style and fashion, and i'm totally flattered that he reads my blog.

he is a real sweetheart and he has a friend ross that really knows his kilts.
so he contacted me this morning with all kinds of information on my kilt.

first of all each scottish clan has its own kilt pattern.
you can identify each clan by the colors and pattern.

i believe my kilt is from the malcom clan.
each scottish surname belongs to a clan and all the clans have various tartans that identify them.. usually a modern/ ancient/ hunting and a dress tartan.  all of them can be completely different but specific to that clan.
if i got any of this wrong, please forgive me but it's a little confusing!
and with a little more research he determined that the maker of my kilt is right there in the scottish highlands.

this is one of the reasons i love blogging.  i have the absolute best readers.  meeting people like you and alan and ross who take the time out of your day to pass on wonderful information, whether it is in regards to fashion, food, gardening or animal cruetly.  i say it all the time but you guys are the best.

and

this is one of the reasons why i love shopping 2nd hand.  you aren't just buying a garment, you are buying a bit of history.

i think this is just fascinating that i found my kilt laying in a pile of clothing at a yard sale here in redlands.  it is indeed a small, amazing world we live in.

thank you alan for passing on such wonderful information to me.
and i promise to wear it on st. andrews day!

cheers everyone!

i love everything about these red satin pumps
can you just imagine all the fun outfits they would go with?

ok, i have to admit, i already bought these!
when they first arrived i thought they looked a bit el cheapo but i've since changed my mind.
they are so soft and comfy and go with practically everything i own.
under $30

aren't these adorable?
payless - under $20

i've been wanting this white ruffle blouse for some time now.
i would wear it with jeans and those oxfords and leopard wedges.
or how about skinny black pants and the red satin pumps?

$65

i tried this cape on in the store and fell in love with it.
i can't decide which i like better, the red one pictured here
or the navy blue one.
both are warm and absolutely adorable on.
perfect for a chilly stroll.

$28

this american apparel 100% cotton flannel scarf is incredibly soft.

this, that & the other thing

well yes, where have i been?  busy that's where.  busy is something i usually don't do but lately i have been helping a friend organize and simplify her house on a teeny tiny budget.  it has been a great deal of fun for me but b/c we are on a tight budget, it does take a lot of time looking for deals and losing my hardrive has made it worse because i lost all the pictures i had taken of her house.  luckily i had downloaded most of the befores onto blogger so they were saved.

also, i will not be cooking this thanksgiving so i thought i'd give you this definitive list of things for creating a compassionate thanksgiving in your home.  or here is my menu from last year.  and if you are overwhelmed by the idea of a complicated table setting, don't be, you can see mine from last year, right here.  and if the stress of the holidays is mounting, you can read this and know you are not alone.

so here is a peek inside karen's living room and also a peek at one of the outfits i'm putting together for the holiday season.

enjoy your weekend, you know i will.  have a happy, peaceful thanksgiving and lets all do the next right thing, shall we?

fair trade

october is national fair trade product month so i thought i'd tell you the things i buy and use regularly that are fair trade items.  first of all, coffee.  i don't drink much coffee but larry does and he loves this trader joes fair trade brand.  it smells delicious every morning when he brews a pot and helps lure me out of bed.  i also love making my vegan chocolate pudding using fair trade chocolate.  blended with coconut milk, it is a sinfully rich and creamy dessert.  you can find the recipe here.  fair trade usa is an organization that helps small, independent farmers throughout the world bring their products to our table.  by purchasing fair trade products you in turn help communities build schools and help small farms and families to sustain themselves.  it's an easy and ethical way to shop.

with THIS easy facebook application you can find stores in your area that sell fair trade products and you, yourself can add products to their list, thereby spreading the kindness.
share their link with your facebook friends and help a lot of deserving people!

fresh ideas

last week larry decided to give up his car for a week. and so i did too. we have walked and biked everywhere. you see so much more when you are out of the car, houses and gardens i've never even noticed.  work is only a mile away for me and larry works out of our home but he is biking 14 miles to the gym and back each morning which i think is nuts but he thinks it's great. we start week 2 today.

and

jule lorusso and her husband matt will be donating over $2000 to the japan relief fund.  isn't that exciting?  thank you to everyone who participated in their incredibly kind offer.  she told me more readers of this blog ordered jewelry than any other.  you guys are so awesome.

and

today i will be starting my third week of sofa to 5k running program.  i first heard about it from paula.  it's officially called couch to 5k but i prefer the term sofa.  read all about it here and join me, summer is coming you know.  how awesome would it be to say...yeah, i run 3 miles each morning.  and how good would that feel?  yesterday was the first day i saw any progress and now i'm so excited i can hardly sit still.

and

also, i've been reading the blog zero waste.  check it out here.  at first i thought this was something i would not be able to do, but i've reconsidered and am making every attempt to cut down on our waste.  instead of thinking recycle we are now first thinking refuse.  walking through the market with thoughts on packaging is an eye opener.  we are being less lazy about composting.  check out this list of

and

i fell in love with this frosting method last week.  i found it on the lovely blog called yummy mummy.  you can frost an entire cake like this.  pop over and just take a look, marina's looks 100x better, such a fresh idea and so gorgeous and easy.  you'll never frost a cake any other way.  my frosting was not very stiff and i still love the way they came out.

do you have any fresh ideas for living this spring?

you are so chic...

Thank you to everyone who participated in this accessory post.  I apologize up front for the lousy pictures.  They just didn't transfer from email to blogger very well.    I know it was hard for some of you to narrow it down, but it did get you thinking, didn't it?
I loved reading all your choices and it also got me looking at blogs i've never read before and let me tell you there are some very stylish women out there.  I realize now that i dress like a man.  I'm gonna have to work on that.  Anyway, I would have to say that watches, or timepieces as fiona calls them were the big winners.  Gorgeous, gorgeous jewelry too.  And then everything from suzanne's crisp white shirt to scarves, birkin bags and lots of loafers, deb's cowboy boots and patricia's bob.  Oh and let's not forget Louise's wheelie walker!
I truly loved reading about and seeing all of your choices.

So here are some of the great accessories that you all wear...

With a little pleading from me, steve from an urban cottage, sent me a picture of his favorite accessory.  It's his grandfathers vintage engraved hamilton watch.  love it and your denim on denim.

And while the stylish slim paley had trouble making up her mind on which accessory is her favorite, she eventually chose this wood and hammered silver necklace that she bought in India.  gasp.

Paige from the wandering cottage initially chose her diamond studs.  she waivered between her eyeglasses, which are very chic and her wonderful husband.  cute.

anne-marie, a charming reader from brisbane australia, chose 3 of her favorites...her Faith handbag, her favourite leopard print scarf and her little bit of bling silver watch.  love them all.

And the world-famous faux fuchsia
a stainless steel and gold rolex
i expected nothing less.

a  diamond rolex is the stylish shoegirl's favorite too

 annie, are you next?

Another reader is the darling Christina.  Her favorite accessory is her pink j crew vest that takes her from casual daytime to evening chic.  so pretty.

The beautiful karin from life in small chunks loves her large collection of scarves.
i do too.

and last but not least, the beautiful sarah of my yellow house  chose her beautiful antique engagement ring.
 i so love this shot.

Here are some more incredibly stylish and lovely women and their lovely accessories...

Thank you lovelies for always inspiring me.
