Students enrolled in a face-to-face and online classroom vary in terms of personality, learning s... more Students enrolled in a face-to-face and online classroom vary in terms of personality, learning styles, socio-cultural context and physical abilities among other differences. This diversity poses a challenge for instructors to plan and implement a class that addresses all these differences. This challenge is the result of many factors and variables to consider when planning to address diversity and at the same time to try to deliver instruction that would match everyone. However, there are strategies and paradigms such as Universal Design, an engineering and architectural design strategy, which is intended to implement products that serve users' diversity. Consequently, Universal Design (UD) emerges as a strategy that has been integrated into face-to-face and online education to target the need of planning for learner's diversity. Instructional strategies used by Universal Design include delivering content using different formats, helping students to determine their own learning style, and implementing assignments and assessments, which are error tolerant. These strategies are of easy implementation in an online course thanks to the flexibility of Course Management Systems such as Moodle and Blackboard. This paper is intended to provide examples of Universal Design strategies implemented in Moodle to address learners' diversity in an online classroom.

Functional-Notional Method (Van Ek & Alexander, 1975; Wilkins, 1976) emphasizes oral production skills. This method is organized in terms of " notions " and " functions ". A " notion " is a particular context in which people communicate, and a " function " is a specific purpose for a speaker in a given context. Functional-Notional Method helps students develop their ability to communicate in a variety of contexts. In this approach, students are expected to actually " do something with the language " (Finocchiaro & Brumfit, 1983, p.13) and build up the basic patterns of language. A course management system like Moodle provides tools and flexibility to experience language by listening and speaking over an extended period. This can be attained through asynchronous activities that allow interaction. The match of Functional-Notional theory and a course management system results in encouraging and improving students' practice of oral and listening skills.

Beneficios y obstáculos a la implementación de desarrollo profesional virtual para docentes rural... more Beneficios y obstáculos a la implementación de desarrollo profesional virtual para docentes rurales en Chile Benefits and obstacles to the implementation of virtual professional development for rural teachers in Chile Benefícios e obstáculos para a implementação do desenvolvimento profissional virtual para professores rurais RESUMEN Este estudio de método mixto investigó la percepción de los docentes rurales de Chile en relación a la implementación de desarrollo profesional docente virtual. Un total de 343 docentes rurales representantes de cada región del país participaron en el estudio implementado entre 2013 y 2014. Se envió una encuesta en línea solicitando a los docentes identificar los posibles obstáculos y beneficios en la implementación virtual de desarrollo docente. Posteriormente se llevó a cabo una entrevista de seguimiento con 10 participantes. Los hallazgos identifican beneficios tales como el intercambio de materiales de enseñanza, de experiencias, comunicación entre docentes, ahorrar tiempo y dinero y variedad de actividades. Los obstáculos identificados se refieren principalmente a la falta de servicios de Internet estable y computadores. En general se detecta una actitud positiva hacia el desarrollo profesional virtual, se necesita más investigación para identificar los objetivos y el diseño instruccional necesario para estos programas rurales. Palabras clave: educación virtual, educación online, desarrollo profesional docente, docente rural, comunidades de aprendizaje ABSTRACT This mixed methods study investigated the perception of rural teachers from Chile in relation to the implementation of virtual professional development. A total of 343 teachers from rural schools representing each región in the country participated in the study implemented between 2013 and 2014. An online Survey was sent to them asking about the possible obstacles and benefits in the use of online resources to deliver professional development. A followed up interview was implemented with 10 participants. The findings identified benefits such as to exchange teaching materials, experiences, communicate with other teachers, save time and money and have more variety of activities. Obstacles identified refer mainly to the lack of stable internet service and lack of computers.The study indicates there is a positive attitude towards online approach needed for these rural programs.
