Kathrin Langschwager was on the East German volleyball team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics that won the fifth-place match against Brazil 3-1. She also won the European Championships in 1987 and participated in the 1986 World Championships.
In total, Langschwager won several international caps with East Germany. She played for SC Dynamo Berlin (1978-90) and Berliner Brandeburg SC. She was East German Champion from 1985-90, and East German Cup winner 1983-87, and 1989. In 1984 and 1985 she won the European Cup Winners’ Cup.
Langschwager’s daughters Sandra and Luisa Sydlik also became successful national volleyball players. In her youth, Langschwager was a speed skater. By profession, she became an integration teacher at a Berlin elementary school.
