After his Olympic victory Clarke Scholes won two golds at the 1955 Pan American Games, the 100 metre freestyle and the 4×100 metre medley (with Frank McKinney and the non-Olympians Fred McGuire and Leonide Barcke). At home, he won two AAU indoor championships and five NCAA titles for Michigan State, as well as three Big 10 Championships. He was married for about five years, but was a bachelor most of his life. He became active in local theatre, as a member of the Grosse Pointe Theatre, and worked as a manufacturer’s representative. When he was 45 Scholes returned to competition in a national masters’ event in St. Louis. After winning the event he never swam again.
