East German heavyweight boxer Maik Heydeck reached the quarter-finals at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, but lost his bout against the eventual silver medalist Baek Hyeon-Man from South Korea, when the referee stopped the fight. The following year Heydeck won the bronze medal at the World Championships. From 1985-87, and in 1989, he won silver medals at the national championships. By profession, Heydeck became a policeman.
