Description & Agenda
Computers measure time by counting seconds since a given starting point and use algorithms to convert seconds into other time units as needed. To display a date and a time in the ISO 8601 yyyy-mm-ddThh:mm format, a computer converts seconds to years, months, days of the month, hours, and minutes. In contrast, the Dec year+day.day format only has 2 time units: years and days of the year. For example, this event will start with food and networking at 2024+364.950 (5:48pm EST) and feature a talk by Martin Laptev, the creator of the Dec measurement system, at 2024+364.975 (6:24pm EST), followed by a toast to the Dec New Year at 2025+000.000 (7:00pm EST). We will be celebrating the Dec New Year according to the time in the Zone 0, the Dec equivalent of the UTC+00:00 time zone, so we don’t have to wait until midnight Eastern Standard Time to open up our bottles of sparkling cider*!
*It can only be called non-alcoholic champagne if it comes from the Champagne Sans Alcool region of France, otherwise it’s just sparkling cider.
Speaker
Martin is a cloud, data, machine learning, and software engineer with a broad scientific background that ranges from biochemistry to epidemiology. He holds an MPH in Epidemiologic and Biostatistical Methods for Public Health and Clinical Research and a certificate in Data Science from Johns Hopkins University, a PhD in Tumor Biology and a teaching certificate from Georgetown University, an MS in Biotechnology from Jagiellonian University in Poland, and a BA in Biology from St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
Logistics
This event will be in person and is co-hosted with Data Science DC. We will try to add an online streaming and recording option for the talk if the space, WiFi, and hardware accommodate. If streaming and recording occur, they will be available on the Data Community DC YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/@DataCommunityDC
After the event, some folks will likely head to Tonic to continue the conversation.
Location
This event will take place in the District of Columbia, two blocks from the Foggy Bottom Metro station at 2112 Pennsylvania Ave NW.
