4 pork steaks
1 teaspoon oil
salt and pepper, to taste
1 1/2 teaspoon paprika
2 large onions
1 cup ketchup
1 cup water
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce

Coat the pork steaks with the oil then sprinkle evenly with salt, pepper, and paprika. Place the pork steaks in the bottom of the crock pot.

Slice the onions very thin and place on top of the pork steaks.

Combine the ketchup, water, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and chili powder until blended. Pour over the top of the onions and pork.

Cover the crock pot and cook on low for 3-4 hours or until pork is tender. Serve the BBQ pork steaks hot.

crock pot notes

Crock pots/slow cookers all heat differently. There is no standard among manufacturers. Cooking times are suggested guidelines based on our testing. Please adjust cooking times and temps to work with your brand and model of slow cooker.

recipe tips

If the sauce is too thin after cooking, remove the pork steaks and reduce the sauce in a saucepan on the stovetop to thicken it before serving.

For a smokier flavor, consider adding a bit of liquid smoke to the barbecue sauce.

If the pork steaks are particularly thick, they may require additional cooking time to become tender.

To add complexity to the sauce, consider sauteing the onions before adding them to the crock pot. This caramelizes the onions, adding sweetness and depth.

For a spicier version, add diced jalapenos or hot sauce to the barbecue sauce.

If you prefer a less vinegary taste, reduce the amount of vinegar and balance it with a sweet component like honey or brown sugar.

common recipe questions
How do I keep the pork steaks from drying out in the crock pot?

The key is the low and slow cooking process. Cooking on low allows the pork to become tender without drying out. The sauce also plays a crucial role in keeping the meat moist.

Can the barbecue sauce be modified for different flavors?

The homemade barbecue sauce in this recipe is a basic version. You can add ingredients like brown sugar for sweetness, smoked paprika for a smoky flavor, or more chili powder for heat. Adjusting the vinegar and Worcestershire sauce can also alter the tanginess and depth of the sauce.

Should I brown the pork steaks before placing them in the crock pot?

While this recipe doesn't require browning, doing so can add depth to the flavor. Quickly searing the pork steaks in a hot pan before placing them in the crock pot can enhance the final dish.

What are suitable side dishes for BBQ pork steaks?

Classic BBQ sides like coleslaw, cornbread, baked beans, or a simple green salad work well. For a healthier option, consider steamed vegetables or a fresh garden salad.

How can leftovers be stored and reheated?

Leftover BBQ pork steaks can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop. The sauce helps keep the pork moist during reheating.

Can this recipe be made in an oven if a crock pot is not available?

Yes, you can cook the pork steaks in an oven. Place them in a covered baking dish with the sauce and onions, and bake at a low temperature (around 275 degrees F) for several hours until tender.
